Is he just not aware of the mentioned SPE port?

I've become aware of that port since I posted that message.

Thanks for clarifying.

In the mean time, I've also noticed the SETI@Home for PS3 Linux (alpha testing) thread (thanks Eric for mentioning Gaurav Khanna), which is probably all about the mentioned SPE port. I did not knew it before, I was just aware of the previous Stoo's PPE port (Play Station 3 used to crunch numbers, more info and PS3 preliminary crunching stats threads).

Any idea how efficient it really is?

Have quarter of a million members of the public signed their PS3s up to Folding@Home? Seriously?

Sadly SONY only supports F@h :(
Even threads about other @home projects are closed at SONY's sites to avoid loosing participants to other projects !
... what is the likelihood that I will burn out the machine leaving it on 24x7 running Boinc? I'm happy to have it participate, but I'm not willing to blow it up in 2 months. :)

Use it as a BURN-IN Test ;-)

If your PS3 survies at least 1-2 weeks ( especially in the summer ) running 24x7 with full power, chances are very high that it would be able to do this for several years.
If it doesnt survive the BURNING IN, at least you are in the guarantee and you should get a new one from your dealer without any problems.

To avoid problems with overheating, dont place it at a sunny place but in the shadows and make sure that there is enough space around your PS3 for the circulation of air. I also advise you to place it on the small side, as the circulation of air is much better this way.
... It's a pity that X-Boxes can't be used in the same way. They cost as much as many computers.

As even without running 24x7, more than 30% of the Xbox 360 are dying with a RRoD from overheating, i asume not many will risk loosing their toy ;-)

For the old Xbox there are hacks to run Linux on them, so it should be possible to use these for distributed computing projects.
I just got a PS3...how do I install/run/configure Boinc? I see there is an option for Folding@home but that is a different DC project (I believe).

You need to install Linux on it. PS3Grid has instructions about it. They recently added another option to run it from a USB stick...

Instead of YDL I would prefer to use Ubuntu 8.04 LTS on my PS3 as i intend to use this distribution on my FSC ESPRIMO mobile V5535 too, anyone here who has sucessfully installed Ubuntu 8.04 on his PS3 until now ?

Your BIG problem will be finding a project that has an app for the Ps3.

PS3 Grid, SETI and yoyo has a PS3 appliction which uses the SPEs of the PS3.
SIMAP and Einstein an PPE only application.

The SPE applications uses the full potential of the PS3. The PPE applications ran only at the "control CPU" of the PS3 and is as fast as a G4 Mac.

Gaurav has build a Astropulse Application for SETI@home, which utilisize the SPEs a lot better than the SETI Enhanched Multibeam application has done it. More Infos at the SETI forums : http://setiathome.berkeley.edu/forum_thread.php?id=48254
