A thread to post information in about projects that are down.

Beginning this with Cosmology:

We had a sudden unforeseen hardware failure Friday night - we have been working to get the server back up and running. Since it is the week-end it is harder to get replacement parts, so the system may continue to be down for of a couple of days before things will be back on track.

It would be great if you could get a message to our users about this - we were trying to think of a way, but I could not even post on my webpage because it is running on the same server that is hosting cosmology@home.

All the best,

Ben

LHC

Due to work being carried out in the Physics Department at Queen Mary, University of London the electricity supply needs to be turned off for the weekend. This means that the LHC@home server/service will be unavailable from 17:30 GMT today (09/11/07) till 09:30 GMT on Monday (12/11/07).

Sorry for the short notice but we have only been informed.

Thanks,
Neasan & Alex.

News from Cosmology@Home:

The downtime is due to a sudden motherboard failure. We purchased a replacement server and were hoping to be operational last night. There has been an additional delay due to driver problems during the OS installation on the new server. Scott has been working to resolve this full time. We hope to be up and running later today.

At this point we do not seem to have had any data loss, since we used a redundant filesystem, in addition to daily backups. Once our old server is fixed, it will be added as secondary server. Then we'll have a fully redundant system, which should continue to work even if we have a similar hardware failure as the one which caused this downtime.

This has been our first extended downtime since the beginning of the project and we intend to make it our last.

Thank you for your patience and continued support -

Cosmology is up&running again. At least, the web pages are. The daemons are for the moment still off line, so reporting and getting new work isn't possible yet.

The web pages have their problems as well, but Scott and Ben ar in the process of fixing those. Patience, they'll get there. :-)

Hydrogen@Home looks to be down at the moment. I've asked Jack for a comment on it, am waiting for a reply.

Not really a project, but BOINC related anyway.
Tonight the BOINC FAQ Service moves to another (faster) server. Therefore it is possible the service will be unavailable to you. It also gets a new DNS, so this outage may take up to 24 hours to clear on your side.

Hydrogen@Home will be down until at least Monday. Jack has no internet connection at home so he's not able to contact the servers until he has a connection back. He emailed me through a Blackberry.

You gotta love tech. ;-)

Edit: It's back up but could have trouble again later...

Whatever happened to Protein@Home? Getting "Access Denied" for months now

Project News June 28, 2007
from proteins@home
After much hard work, Proteins@Home is ready for a vacation! We hope to finish all the workunits that are currently on our server or being crunched by volunteers over the next couple of weeks. After that, the project will go offline for a few months. We will be posting a progress report on this web site within a week or two. All participants will be notified by email. Meanwhile, many thanks to all of you for your help and participation!

Hydrogen@home is updating its Apache server software. This may give you some errors, or just an "It Works!" message on their pages. Jack feels he will have it fixed within the hour.

Later edit: I just spoke with Jack, he's trying to reinstate the database, but his backups have problems. It'll take several hours.
