Not really adding anything interesting to this thread, but I've got it on my openSUSE 10.3 32-bit system with 5.10.21. Set up the 'remote control' stuff so that I could run the manager from my windows box instead, and that worked fine. Haven't tried experimenting with different versions since I found a solution that worked for me.

I'll be changing to openSUSE 10.3 64-bit sometime next week in any case, and I'll use the same remote control setup if the problem still persists.

I did the same as MikeMarsUK now, and it works.
I control the client from my windows machine, and it runs fine.
But i would prefer to be able to start the manager on the linux box, too.

After executing it, the 5.10.8 GUI ran again
