Am I missing something? Why does each Boinc project require its own account? Can't Boinc consolidate account information into one service that all the projects share?

I know a few people, myself included, that have stopped at one project (seti@home) because of the annoyance of having multiple accounts to manage.

Each project is a separate entity, which means they want to control who joins, pretty simple if you ask me..

There is an up coming account manager. Check is in the mail. I am not sure how much this will help, but, a known issue with work ongoing to fix the problem. There is some information on this web site under account manager.

I have to agree with Scooter.

It's a *real* pain having to re-enter my details in multiple projects, keep track of them and then if I want to add the client to another machine (I have 3 PCs and one Mac running at home and I got bored after the first PC and the Mac). Unlike the first poster I did stick with it and register with a couple of projects but it came so close to the too hard basket.

Also I'd like to be able to simply install the manager on a new machine and have it go and grab the project details for my account from one central place and connect to the projects.

Having the ability to register for new projects as a one-click - either from the client and/or the main BOINC website, or by having a link that says 'get my profile from BOINC' on client sites.

Ditto for creating the posting profile here.

Having to go to individual sites to keep the generic BOINC preferences in sync or adjust project weighting is just a pain

It should be made simpler in order to roll it out further to less computer savvy users.

There is no kudos to be gained through complexity or obscurity ... after all the true power of any grid solution is measured in the effective processing power of the grid....

while I'm rambling on with this subject....

new projects could (should) be able to use the manager to announce their projects - a quick summary and a one-click 'join' option.

If the manager was smart and could work with distributed profiles (i.e if I use the same registration data on several machines) joining on one should, by default, roll the project out to every machine I'm logged in on when it next communicates....

And of course the improved level of communications would mean that generating things like stats images to include in forum signatures would be a lot simpler (again, not requiring the user to jump through hoops)...
