Everything was going fine until I installed MS's LiveOne Care 2 weeks ago. I couldn't get BOINC to connect to "localhost" but finally worked it out by adding the pgms to the Windows Firewall.

Now I can connect to "localhost", but for the last week I've been tearing my hair out because now I cant get SETI to connect. All I keep getting is "Scheduler request failed: couldn't connect to server" and "Access to referenced site failed - check network connection or proxy configuration". I defers for one minute and retrys with the same results. I've tried uninstalling and installing different versions to no avail.

I'm on a broadband connection and haven't had to mess with the connection or proxy configuration before.

Any ideas??????

"Access to referenced site failed" means that BOINC also can't ping www.google.com, so it is a firewall problem. Make sure you allow Boinc.exe on port 80 for the internet and Boinc.exe, Boinc.scr and Boincmgr.exe on port 31416 for the local traffic (on localhost).

Since I don't have Vista, I wouldn't know off hand.
Then again, you can always check your Windows Help...

Or check this technet page. Maybe it's of help.

Vista firewall monitors incoming and outgoing traffic - it is much more in depth (complicated) than XP firewall.

Click you RMB on the My Computer icon and choose Manage from the menu.

In the Computer Manager console, there is (from what i remember from a brief play around) a section for the Vista firewall rules.

I would recommend added the BOINC exe files to the exception list with unlimited scope (i.e it can access the internet unmonitored) - i think we can assume that all the BOINC executables are sound.

Let us know how you get on...
