On unknown circumstances a task will not be shown to be completed but will not get any CPU time either. Restarting the machine will have no effect.

On investigating this I realized, that a lock file is placed in the appropriate slot. Deleting that lock put the task into working condition again until completion. In addition the results were being accepted.

Prior to this discovery I deleted those tasks. A guess is, that those locks are generated on a regular basis, but not deleted when the machine is shut down normally but at some unforeseen point in time.

The machine is equipped with an 8th generation Intel Core running win10.

I suspect this is to do with your machine rather than the server.

What project(s) does this happen with and what version of BOINC? While you have found a workaround, it would be useful to you and possibly others to know how to stop it happening in the first place and to understand enough to do that needs rather more information.

What project(s) does this happen with and what version of BOINC?
I am running tasks from the project "World Community Grid", subproject "OpenPandemics - COVID-19" using latest BOINC 7.16.20 (x64), released 18 Oct 2021.

Although WCG lets users download version 7.16.11, the recommended version is 7.16.20.
[...] that needs rather more information.

Of course, but will anybody wade through GB of logging files in order to find an error happening seldom---if an error is logged at all?

You don’t mention a GPU so can we assume that you’re only running the CPU based OPN1 tasks and none of the GPU based OPNG tasks?

Yes, no GPU installed. The i7-8700 has internal graphic capabilities.
