Message 101754 - Posted: 24 Nov 2020, 19:07:09 UTC

this is the first time I have this trouble. I have several jobs done and couldn't upload for a while. Nowthe upload is finished but the jobs stuck at"100%. hochgeladen, meldebereit". It is not possible for me to log in to my account at Asteroids@home and I get a lot of SQL messages and the error message: user unknown.
Dows anybody know whats going on there ?
thanks

Their server is down, which is why you cannot report finished work. It'll also account for all the SQL errors on all their pages, the missing News, etc.

Agreed. For the second day in a row, I have not been able to connect with the Asteroids site.

When trying to log onto my account, I get a message saying that there is no such account.

Are they doing a massive upgrade? Is all of the project equipment broken? Has the project been catastrophically hacked?

Any information or ideas?

I've just tried their home page.
As you say lots of SQL database errors plus a bit of fixed text. This indicates that their database is in trouble, and, in my experience, fixing such troubles can take several days.
I would suggest that all we can do is sit back and wait, checking their home page once a day.

From their home page:
I am sorry for the current problems, unfortunately the database server crashed - hardware failure. I can't say now when it will be running again. I will post any news I'll have.

I expect they’ll be offline for a week at least, maybe longer.

Thanks for the response.

It's better to have an idea of what happened than not to know and provoke idle speculation.

their update:

Dear friends, as many of you already noticed, the Asteroids@home project has been down for several days now. The reason is an unexpected hardware failure of one of our servers. This machine has served us devotedly non-stop for many years, but its life came to the end. Now we need to replace it and it will take some time. Covid-19 situation makes things even more difficult as there are so many ongoing restrictions and administrative obstacles that we cannot be sure of any plans or schedules for the next few months to come. We will still try to do our best to find some temporary solution but we cannot guarantee any date. And we will still need to find a final and stable solution after that. Thank you for your patience.

We hope to be back soon! The Asteroids@home team.

Asteroids appears to be running again. Although the project status shows no work now available it must have uploaded thousands of WUs, including eight or ten I received, plus those that were in abeyance since the project went down.

However, Chrome will not let me access my account or even post to the project discussion form.

I get an error message:

"Your connection is not private
Attackers might be trying to steal your information from asteroidsathome.net (for example, passwords, messages, or credit cards). Learn more
NET::ERR_CERT_DATE_INVALID"

I tried to use Chrome Manage Extensions without success.

Is the connection certificate not valid or do I have an incorrect setting?

Should I try normal Google instead of Chrome? Yahoo? Internet Explorer?

Thanks for any guidance.

Their certificate is expired according to my browser. If I ignore the warning I can log in to my account.

Asteroids down, Asteroids up, asteroids down.

After a brief flurry of activity, once again there are no WUs in the pipe.

Well, it was fun While it lasted.

There has been some progress. Latest news says:
Server status update
BOINC server is now running but it is still a temporary solution and there is still some additional work that needs to be done. New workunits should be available in a week or two.

Radim Vančo (FoxKyong) 26 Feb 2021, 13:25:25 UTC

The server status page is showing the upload and download servers as being active. Scheduler requests return "Project is shut down for maintenance". Give it some more time for things to return to normal.

I still can't log onto the Asteroids site of my account.

Still says,
"Your connection is not private
Attackers might be trying to steal your information from asteroidsathome.net (for example, passwords, messages, or credit cards). Learn more
NET::ERR_CERT_DATE_INVALID"

It's been saying that for months. I don't have any personal information, credit cards or critical messages on BOINC. My password is unique to it alone. But if the certification is not valid, when are the admins gonna fix it?

Do they even know about this?

They probably do know about this.

Do they care about this?
How far down their list of urgent jobs is it?
Are they in a position to do something about this?

(and a load more questions)

Yes. Something did break, somewhere.

When I try to log into my account, I get this message:
++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
Warning: mysqli::mysqli(): (HY000/2003): Can't connect to MySQL server on 'project2' (113) in /home/boincadm/projects/boinc/html/inc/db_conn.inc on line 39

Warning: mysqli::query(): Couldn't fetch mysqli in /home/boincadm/projects/boinc/html/inc/db_conn.inc on line 63
Database Error

Warning: mysqli::escape_string(): Couldn't fetch mysqli in /home/boincadm/projects/boinc/html/inc/db_conn.inc on line 227
++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
I tried to reset the project, but that had no effect.

I can access my other projects -- Rosetta and World Community Grid -- with no problem (although WCG has given me no work for two days).

So what's broken with Asteroids now?

However, Kyong did say there might be problems after their last outage was fixed. So maybe this an instance of such a problem?

Unless the problem is on my end?

The error message comes from the (Asteroids) server not from your own computer. So it looks as if they having continued problems :-(

Whatever it was, it seems to be fixed now.

Except, of course, for no new tasks.
