Having problems with Rosetta and World Community Grid.

WCG eliminated my BOINC account. I had to download BOINC again just to write this.

I signed on to WCG and the computer started crunching.
However, it removed BONIC from my computer. In the WCG client, Asteroids and WCG are shown, as are SETI@Home and POGS, which are no longer active.

But Rosetta is missing!!

WCG won't let me on its forum page.

I had no active Rosetta tasks, but it should still show on my computer, along with the credits it has amassed.

Moreover, when I tried to log into BOINC, it says there is no such account for my email address. I've had a BOINC account for over 20 years. And WCG does not show up on my FreeDC page, but it is definitely cutting back on my productivity, slowing down my other projects.

I'm all for helping with COVID-19 research, but there has to be something amiss here.

What gives? I don't like how WGC has taken over my computer. Is that a common thing?

I feel a little confused. You don't even have to have BOINC on your computer to log into and post in these forums.

Are you using the WCG version of the client? In theory this should not make a difference. Which operating system are you using and which BOINC version? Both things that are often helpful to guide those trying to help.

So many things.
Let me start off with: I've had a BOINC account for over 20 years.
No you haven't. These forums started in August 2005, development of BOINC started 3 years before that.

The World Community Grid client is a BOINC client with a WCG skin. The present WCG BOINC is 7.2.47 (6 years old).
Using BOINC doesn't make an account on these forums. You specifically have to make an account here to be able to post here. There are a handful of links from the Help menu in the manager, but these pages do nothing with the client. The only communication the client has with the BOINC website is to check periodically if the Add Project wizard list is updated.

WCG won't let me on its forum page.
For information, they're here: https://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/forums/wcg/index
You need to have an account to be able to post on their forums: Join and use the Log In option at the top of the screen on the previous link to log in.

I signed on to WCG and the computer started crunching.
However, it removed BONIC from my computer.

Since WCG is a BOINC client with a WCG skin, of course it will remove the other BOINC version. There can only be one BOINC installed at a time. It's the same as were you to update your BOINC version to a newer one, then the old BOINC is removed as well. To be able to run WCG on your BOINC you're not required to run the WCG themed BOINC, you can just add World Community Grid through the Add Project wizard.

But Rosetta is missing!!
I had no active Rosetta tasks, but it should still show on my computer, along with the credits it has amassed.

BOINC and WCG BOINC make use of the same data directory, which will stay untouched between uninstalling and reinstalling of the BOINC programs. So make sure your BOINC had Rosetta added.

And WCG does not show up on my FreeDC page, but it is definitely cutting back on my productivity, slowing down my other projects.
Sounds like you have two accounts. Make sure you used the same email address (without typos) all over the place. The email address is the unique identifier (even though the WCG website uses unique usernames!).

Rosetta recently changed address (http to https, if I'm correct).
Rosetta also isn't working on Android 10, most likely because of this issue.

Jord:

Thanks for pointing out the errors in my naive posts. I've been doing S@H and other BOINC projects for a long time, but don't really get into the inner details of them, as you can obviously see. I just let them run.

You said, "Let me start off with: I've had a BOINC account for over 20 years.
No you haven't. These forums started in August 2005, development of BOINC started 3 years before that."
OK, my mistake. I began running SETI@Home almost when it first began, which, as you pointed out, was before BOINC.

Some people are really into computer management, software development, manipulating the workings and features of BOINC and other applications used in distributed computing. I am not one of those guys. However, I can do mechanics. I built my first PC clone from a Heathkit in 1986 and put this computer and another one together from parts ordered on Tiger Direct. That is easy, compared to following the intricacies of these projects. I'm on my 5th PC, running them 24/7/365 till they die.

Yesterday I uninstalled WCG and restarted the BOINC Manager, then added WCG. Everything went back more or less to normal. It got a few Rosetta tasks, some WCG and worked on the backlog of Asteroid tasks. They are all now running. But WCG still does not show up in my FreeDC stats.

My Asteroids account shows 20 tasks in progress, but the BOINC manager shows only five. I will investigate if there are multiple examples of BOINC running on this machine.

This is obviously not my area of expertise. I appreciate your forbearance with my ineptitude and your assistance in working through the problems I have encountered.

Sincerely,
Steven Gaber

Could be ghosts (tasks sent but that never arrived, or that got lost on your computer because you changed clients) but I suspect you have the GUI set to show only running tasks. In BOINC Manager Advanced view check on the left if there's a button stating "Show all tasks". If there is, click it and then all tasks will show. The button will have changed to "Show active tasks", it shows the option you have, not the state it's in.

If with Show all tasks it still shows just 5, then it's the before situation where they got lost. Nothing you can do about that.

There is also this these days: GDPR Compliance

So, have you found this on the WCG site, and accepted the conditions?
Otherwise, they won't include your results in the stats exports.

Sid and Jord:
So I took your advice and looked for multiple instances of BOINC on my computer -- and found some.
In my Asteroids account and my SETI account, there are two computers listed. But in each case, the two computers are actually the same one, but they have different versions of BOINC, 7.16.7 and 7.14.3

Merge computers by name

When I try to merge the two, I get "Processing Steve-PC
Can't merge host 79360 into 468676 - they're incompatible."

Can I fix this situation? The Rosetta and WCG accounts only show one computer. WCG still does not appear in my FreeDC stats.
Thanks again.

Finally, my WCG account now appears in my FreeDC stats. Yaaaay!

Still can't merge the two versions of BOINC on my computer.

Thanks for your help

Good news and worse news. After following your advice, the problems with WCG and Rosdetta were solved. Malwarebytes finally accepted asteroids@home on the exception list. Hooray.

A week or so ago, I bragged about how steady this computer is, running three or four projects 24/7/365 for several years.

I gave it a jinx. Three days ago it shut down. The monitor read "No signal." The power button on the front panel had no effect and neither did the switch on the back of the power supply. I thought it was completely dead. I vacuumed out the accumulated dust and cat hair, sprayed LectraClean on the switch contacts and changed out the power chord.

The next day it came on when I pressed the power button. Crunched a few tasks and shut itself down again and would not respond for another 12 hours.

Thinking it it may be an overheat issue, I drilled lots of holes in the sheet metal of the right side of the case (with the case removed so metal filings wouldn't get inside). I downloaded CoreTemp. It shows the CPU is between 46 and 56 degrees C. Rosetta makes it run hotter. It sets by default to give a warning when the CPU gets to 80 degrees, but it has never gotten that hot. I don't overclock the machine.

Thursday a new and bigger power supply will arrive. We'll see what happens after I install it.

Do you think this computer is on its way out? Should I add another fan to supplement the three fans already inside? Should I replace the motherboard or CPU or just get another computer? There is still lots of space on the 1 TB hard drive. I could take it out and put it in a different computer.

If you don't hear from me again, it's because I could not revive this machine again.

Cheers,
SGaber
