I added a couple of Androids this morning and they picked up a new version of Boinc 7.16.5. The arrow issue has been fixed, but haven't checked to see if it works with Android 8.1 go version yet. The version of Android I installed the new Boinc version on were both Android 6.0.

Started it up.
Added two projects.
Changed the preferences.
And then the client crashed and that's all she does from here on in. Only the GUI runs.

Oh dear. I won't do any further updates until there's more feedback.

Uninstalled it.
Reinstalled it.

Going again the start->cancel->add project route
Chose Androids as project.
Added Androids.
Doing benchmarks.
I am in the Projects tab only. Wait until it's done benchmarking.
After 2 minutes it's done benchmarks
Go to preferences.
Check Advanced.
Uncheck Pause computation when screen is on.
Change additional buffer to 0.1
Set GUI log level to 5

Added the USB charger.
The client and GUI crash.
Restart BOINC.
Client crashes immediately.

Unplugged charger.
Uninstalled BOINC.
Reinstalled BOINC.
Don't add a project.
Preferences.
Advanced options.
Uncheck Pause computation when screen is on.
Plug USB charger in.
Wait for it...
Client will crash.

I too am experiencing similar behavior, I've found opening the app settings in android, going to boinc, and force stopping boinc will 'uncrash' it and bring the app back to life, but immediately crashes when computation starts.

App works as expected until work begins then android notifies me the boinc app 'keeps stopping' at which point all the tasks disappear from the gui and all menus bring up a blank page untill the app is force stopped in the android settings.

Ive tweaked the number of cores and cpu time limit but no effect.

since the gui crashes i'm not sure how to extract the client logs to see if they shed any light on the issue.

Looks like 7.16.5 has been withdrawn as has 7.16.3.

I uninstalled BOINC and reinstalled from the google play store, strangely it installed 7.4.53 (i was expecting a version older than 7.16.3)

after adding the projects back into the app it seems to be functioning as expected now on my android 7.1.2, android 9 and android 10 devices.

7.4.53 is an older version, dates back to 2016. I was going to try 7.16.5 on some of my older Androids but it had vanished from PlayStore by yesterday evening. It certainly works just fine with Android 6.0 but I'm guessing that it wasn't properly tested on newer versions.

And 7.16.5 also seems fine on Android 7.1.2 which I think is about as recent as the chip in my ageing fairphone can cope with.

Seems to be in play store according to my phone. I can't remember what I had to do to enable beta software to be installed.

Yes, 7.4.53 is now the default Boinc App in Playstore. I'm not sure what has happened to the Beta version 7.16.3. I became a Beta tester a while ago but when I added another Android this morning only 7.4.53 was available from Playstore. I also looked at previous versions of Boinc on the Berkeley site and 7.16.5 isn't there, although 7.16.3 is still there.

Do you have the .apk file on one of your other devices to install from that?

Likewise I had to uninstall and it reinstalled as 7.4.53 though that didn't show in the app store until after I'd uninstalled it.

Hopefully not too many users accounts have broken!

Well my old Samsung, J3 2016, downloaded 7.16.5 via auto update for a BETA tester and since my phone is running an older Android OS 7.1.1 it is doing fine. The most noticeable change is that BOINC Icon is now always visible on the upper corner of my screen. I am running 6 projects on it currently with no noted errors.

Reviewed Log notes and they are clean of errors and exceptions. BOINC is auto loading at time of phone boot / power cycle.

So far it has been quite a few days without complaint.

Hi
I've been running 7.16.3 on my https://setiathome.berkeley.edu/show_host_detail.php?hostid=8800543 successfully for several months.

When I ran out of SETI work a few days ago, I attached my tablet to Rosetta, LHC, and Einstein

Unfortunately I received over 100 Einstein tasks before I managed to hit NNT.

The Tasks Tab became completely blank apart from the options bar at the top of the screen !

I have tried restarting both BOINC and 2 system restarts as well.

All the other tabs are still visible, and the running tasks are also visible on the system notification area.

I still have 100 Einstein tasks in progress https://einsteinathome.org/host/12824479/tasks/0/0

Since this problem occurred, I have managed to return valid or pending tasks to SETI, Einstein and Rosetta, I can control projects and other preferences, but I can't see any individual Tasks !

I'm hoping that a couple more Einstein tasks will complete overnight, but if the Tasks Tab contents doesn't reappear once it gets below 100 tasks, I shall probably have to Reset or Remove Einstein from this device.

Help please ?

There isn't much anyone can do other than wait for the task list to whittle down and see if that fixes things.

I have also had this happen on 7.16.3 but have never had more than six tasks at a time. It has happened a few times but always resolved without any action on my part. I haven't been able to identify anything that precipitates it. Projects list also goes blank when this happens as does list in transfers tab if any transfers happening at the time.

Edit:
Forget all that. too early and didn't notice was in Android bit.

Now that it's happened, probably all you can do is wait it out. I also have an Android tablet (Samsung A) which I use for similar testing: my biggest problem is that it seems sometimes to lose internet connection, and I wake it up to see all tasks uploading, no movement - and I can't find 'retry transfers' anywhere. The system awakening seems to sort out wifi, and they upload/report/replace soon enough, but it's a bit of a waste.

To your problem. Look at your machine in this view: https://einsteinathome.org/host/12824479/tasks/0/0?sort=asc&order=Sent (sorted by date, oldest first). I see

1 @ 12 Apr 2020 10:30:58
5 @ 12 Apr 2020 10:32:02
8 @ 12 Apr 2020 10:34:14
7 @ 12 Apr 2020 10:35:21

and later
some @ 14 Apr 2020 13:12:53
some @ 14 Apr 2020 13:13:56

These batches are separated by a bit over a minute - which means it is your client which is making repeated requests, not Einstein making unsolicited deliveries, as some imply. I've seen (and reported) that behaviour with desktop Windows machines attached to Einstein (only): the client recognises the first arrival of new work, but doesn't adjust its assessment of the current cache level, and asks again. And again. And again... It's a very difficult bug to track down, and I seem to be the only person worried about it.

When it starts, that problem seems to continue until 'something' happens to change the state. Even setting a log flag for diagnosis seems to be enough, or the project deciding I've had enough.

My Android device is set on a venue which I've specified to cache 0.01 days only, and that seems to work. My desktop machines are controlled by local preferences, so there's no conflict.
