Having a problem connecting to a project on a windows 98 system. I've been using this program for many years with seti@home on several other, more modern, computers but haven't had this laptop working for anything in many years. Thought I would put it to work. I have it functioning and it has internet access, although I have no intention of doing anything with it but crunch seti numbers. I've tried versions 5.8.16, 6.6.38 and the latest version with mixed results.

5.8.16 seems to do everything right accept attach a project. It says the servers are busy come back later. And later is always the same message.

6.6.38 gives error messages and never connects.

7.14.2 says immediately that it needs a newer windows version and stops. So that version is a no go.

I don't know where the problem is. A setting on the computer, the version of BOINC I'm using or Seti servers. Does anyone use Windows 98 with BOINC?

I was one of the people helping you in your thread over at Seti, and while I enjoy your enthusiasm and applaud you trying to keep old hardware alive, I wonder if it's worth it. A bit of an Android smart phone is more powerful than any of the old hardware from yesteryear, especially if that hardware can only run Windows 98 (SE). Isn't there an option for you to install Windows XP on that system?

Just for info, what kind of CPU does it have? Memory amount? That sort of thing.
Because if it's anything like these defaults you cannot use it for any BOINC project, for reasons of missing enough memory alone. Most projects, if not all, require at least 256MB memory but like it if there's lots more. 32MB is not enough.

I get it, I know it's under-powered. Memory is at 160MB. It was for no other reason than to put it to use. I'm only into it for nothing more than $14 to give it internet access and a free download to upgrade the usb to use a wireless mouse or a flash drive. It was worth a try. Thank you for your help.

Just for the record:

This is what's on the OS list for Seti, at BOINCstats:

Rank Name of Operating System Number of OS's Total credit Credit per CPU Average credit per CPU

1952 Microsoft Windows 98 SE 2 3,320.41 0.05 1,660.20

2471 Microsoft Windows 98 1 145.37 0.00 145.37

******************

So the answer to your last question is 3.

It is quite possible that a computer that is already registered have no problems, but new ones, like yours, are struggling :-(

If that's your budget, you'd have to look at your power bill as well.
An old PC, uses up around 100-200 Watts, that'll be $100-200 a year, just on electricity.

If you really want to make it work, I would suggest to install Lubuntu on the device.
Lubuntu 14.04, or 16.04 use up very little resources (don't look very nice, but are low on memory), and you'll be able to run Boinc from there.
Or, perhaps look around for better hardware, that's a little older but people junked.
Yard sales, and the likes...

The OP wanted to see if his old PC would run BOINC & SETI as it stood, no changes to operating system, spend nothing bu t a bit of time trying various options. Hence all the conversation about possible options. Sadly that route hasn't worked :-(

Lubuntu can be easily installed alongside windows 98, and is 'free', in that it costs just downloading the free iso, and a DVDr or USB stick to put the iso on.
You could even install it on a USB stick, so that the original PC drive isn't being modified, and only the hardware is being used.
Since Win98 isn't supported, there's no other way.
One could download one of the hacked win nt versions online, with possibly the same outcome.

Yet again you ignore the OP's quest - I suggest you READ what the OP wants to achieve before suggstign anything else.
