Now it's getting annoying. Over 8 hours, no less than 6 of my 13 windows machines had this problem (found out when I woke up). Lots o' wasted crunching!

I'd have a very close look at antivir/spam and installation of IE7 final. Too many strange events around the DC world.

I run no AV or spam. Maybe installation of IE7 could be it. It sure does not happen on any of my Macs.

Meantime, a thorough check of the hardware would not harm. I never get to understand all the moaning, and not volunteering the actual project BOiNC was working on....oh and both BOiNCmgr.exe or BOiNC.exe barely use CPU time..... it's the science taking all the idle time!.

I don't understand what you are saying here. Are you asking what projects I am working on? Just about all of them. You can see here:

http://www.boincstats.com/stats/boinc_user_graph.php?pr=bo&id=0a7b8378436fdcaef549d87e35f26480

...and another 2 were dead again when I woke up this AM.

I am running Windows XP without IE7. No new installations of anything for a few months and yet boinc.exe has started to crash periodically. Computer does not run firewall.

Hope this helps

Had another crash overnight, this time with 5.4.11. It looks like BOINC was downloading from Rosetta again. The crash address is in the Curl code.

It just happened again, this time while I watching. It was definitely in the process of uploading and downloading for several projects, if that helps.

This is the computer.

Please zombie67, send your stderrdae.txt to Rom Walton. Email address at rwalton at ssl dot berkeley dot edu. Add a small description of the problem (so he remembers what it was about), Boinc version and which project it happens on.

If anyone is having intermittent problems with networking since XP SP2, take a look in the event log and see if there are 4226 messages (System / TCP/IPWarnings / TCP/IP has reached the security limit imposed on the number of concurrent TCP connect attempts).

This limit is 10 outgoing connections established in 1 second. I don't know if this will be a problem or not, but it's something to look out for. I also don't know if this includes localhost connections.

The BOINC client crashed twice more over the weekend, on a host running 5.8.0. The code address seeme to be inside the libCurl code again. The stderrdae.txt file is also full of "ERROR: buffer too small in MFILE::vprintf()" entries, which I think is new in 5.8.0. A different host running 5.7.5 crashed 3 times yesterday at the exact same code address (0x0033BA64).

I'm not sure if this means anything, as most of these posts talk about Rosetta, and I'm not working on Rosetta ATM. I'm having the BOINC service actually stop.

I went in and set it up to restart the service for all 3 of the settings. But, here's where it gets weird.

It only seems to do this when I try to use the manager to control the other machine here in the house, The manager shows information that happened hours ago, and I can go to the machine and see the updated info, and everything is good. The messages tab shows real-time info, just not the tasks tab. And, then whe I come back to localhost, it's like clockwork. Seconds after, I lose localhost, and the manager whines.

It just started doing it today, but I haven't been to WindowsUpdate in about a month. There were some critical updates that I did install earlier today, and it seemed to be right after that these problems cropped up. I've only been doing PrimeGrid and 2 CPDN SAP work units today. It also seems that when the client comes back, it complains about missing workunits, that I've already uploaded and reported. Also, at least one WU errors out.

Does this help any?

Off topic

You'd better not be too long finishing your SAP models.
The project has effectively finished, and the server may not be there for too much longer.

Ok so I have been running boinc since they moved over to it and have been running SETI and more recently Climate prediction. I have a Pentium 4 2.6ghz running XP Pro SP2 with the latest version of BOINC plus all the latest and greatest updates auto updated and installed. Then yesterday out of no where I get this error message.

Microsoft Visual C++ Runtime error

Buffer overrun detected

Program: c:\\Program Files\\Boinc\\boinc.exe

A buffer overrun has been detected which has corrupted the program's internal state. The program cannot safely continue execution and must now be terminated.

Anyone have this one happen to them yet. I've unisntalled the full program and reinstalled it and I get the same error.

After you've uninstalled it, try renaming the entire c:\\program files\\boinc to something else, and then do the reinstall after that. The XML configuration files are retained after an uninstall - if the corruption is in those, then you'd just be picking up the corrupt version again. Similarly, if there's a bad disk sector involved, it'd be kept out of the way by the renamed original version.

Looking at the various reports :

* OS is usually XP home, XP pro, various service packs
* CPDN is common (but remember that I'm mostly looking at the CPDN boards, so that's hardly suprising)
* Some of them are fixed by moving the files around on the disk (which would imply bad sectors). My concern here is the frequency of writing to the client_state.xml file. Once a disk has a bad sector, the disk as a whole tends to fail quite quickly.
* Some of them are only fixed when the original installation is deleted (which would imply that the XML config files or executables are corrupt)
* Service installs are the most common, but single user installs are affected too
* All the reports have been from various versions of Boinc 5 (i.e., from 5.3.19 up to 5.8). Haven't seen any V4 reports, but V4 doesn't work on CPDN anyway.

I moved all the STD*.TXT files out of the BOINC directory after noticing that the size of some of the files had grow to the point where sending them to anyone for analysis might be a problem (the stdoutgui.txt file was over 25MB). BOINC creates new files and I thought that sending these smaller files to someone would be easier. I have not had a crash since doing this but it has only been a week and that is not long enough to know if these files had anything to do with the crashes. It is interresting to note that posts in this thread indicate that reinstalling BOINC did not change crash problem behavior unless the BOINC folder was removed (removing the STD*.TXT files?). It might be interresting for someone seeing repeated crashes to experiment by moving the STD*.TXT files out of the BOINC directory to see if this has any effect on the problem.

Hmm Iam wondering, all .txt files only have a max size of 2MB, others renamed to .old by boinc or Iam wrong?

I've had 5.8.1 crash as well now, with the same code address as 5.8.0 too.

Looks like BOINC was having connect issues right before it crashed. Really hope this gets fixed soon - one host crashed 5 times in 48 hours.

I can reproduce this crash very fast, set the cache to 0.1 days, then asking separately for more work by 3-4 projects, boinc.exe crashes with debugger running and you got an empty boinc manager windows with the result of a lost connection to boinc core client.

It could be a libcurl error, there is a new one out there!

The crash address is always within the address space of libcurl.dll so it could be that.

It's a bit of a puzzle why the problem first appeared in early November though on a large number of hosts. It wasn't an update from Microsoft. And no one has owned up to changing anything on the server-side code around that time.
