If Windows Update automatically restarts the computer during the night, does it exit the BOINC manager gracefully? I have the manager set to stop processing tasks and nothing is retained in memory when exited.

I wouldn't expect it to exit BOINC manager (or the client) gracefully, no. Knowing Windows Update, it'll just forcefully cut off programs prior to rebooting.

IIRC doze update will ask once and only once nicely to quit then it quickly just gets nasty. I'll add that if you are using a project that doesn't checkpoint, you will lose all the work done no matter the memory setting. Also VirtualBox doesn't play nice with windoze shutdown.
