I keep getting the following notice running 7.12.1 under WINE (Pretending to be Windows7 )under Ubuntu 18.04.

Can't detect VirtualBox because this is a 32-bit version of BOINC; to fix, please install a 64-bit version.

I have no reason to want to detect VB when using WINE. Is there a way to disable this message?

(I am running 32 bit version as I had problems getting the 64 bit version to rununder WINE last time I tried it.)

If you're running a 64-bit emulated Windows as WINE, you should be running a 64-bit version of BOINC too. This message should only appear when a 32-bit version of BOINC is running under a 64-bit version of Windows.

Download 64-bit BOINC installer (manually from download_all if needed), uninstall current, install replacement.

One of the moderators from CPDN had problems installing the 64 bit version of BOINC under WINE though he had assumed that there was just a general problem with it as he had done so successfully in the past. When I told him I had had to go to the 32 bit version to get it to run he was also able to get the 32 bit version to run. However I don't know if the problem is with WINE or BOINC?

We had a fairly intense discussion about the VBox notice in development circles earlier this year. My view is (was) that because it only appears when the 'bitness' of BOINC and Windows are mis-matched, it wasn't a significant problem, because there was never a need to mis-match them, and a mistake should be flagged up.

If you think you've found a genuine need for a cross-install, we should investigate that first - and if we can't solve that one, then I'd accept that we should re-visit the VBox notice.

Isn't the thing here that the host-OS in WINE is 64 bit, and VBox is 64 bit, but BOINC is 32 bit and thus it can't detect a 64bit VBox? Won't that be solved by uninstalling the 64bit VBox and installing the 32bit version?

Reason for cross install is I have another program I run occasionally under WINE that is 64bit. I admit I haven't looked at having both 64 and 32 bit wine installed as that seems like the route for more confusion! If I could get the 64bit version to install under WINE that would obviously sort out the problem.

I am certainly not asking for any code rewrites to solve this. More curious to see if there were anything I could do my end.

Which bit hangs - Manager or Client? Remember the common problem of the Manager opening, but sticks at "can't communicate with client". Which, as often as not, means the client has crashed immediately.

Won't that be solved by uninstalling the 64bit VBox and installing the 32bit version?

I'm not sure that mixed-mode VBox installation is possible.

Windows hosts x86/AMD64 on https://www.virtualbox.org/wiki/Download_Old_Builds_5_2 leads to a single download file, not a choice. I might see what I can dig out of it.

It might be worth peeking to see if BOINC is listed in https://appdb.winehq.org/, with or without any warnings.

I dont know at what point cpdn moderator started having problems.

I have found the stderrgui.txt from the debug version of manager. It is about 18kB. Was originally 214kB but I realised it was output from several tries so I deleted it and then produced a fresh one. I am afraid most of it means absolutely nothing to me!
Edit: I manually started the client installed from the 64bit installer first and can confirm that that runs normally.

It might be that Wine doesn't support 64-bit IE engine used in Notices tab. Try leaving a working Manager in some other tab than Notices when you exit it and then try the 64-bit version.

No difference, though as I normally switch the manager back to the Tasks tab after looking at any other tab, I didn't really expect one. Thanks for the idea though.

Just tried running 64bit IE in WINE and it works without issues on all but one site I tried. trying to play videos on youtube crashes both 32bit and 64bit IE in WINE.
