I've participated in BOINC since at least as early as 2010, but have recently run into a severe problem.

I cannot install BOINC Client in LinuxMint 19 Cinnamon (which is based on Ubuntu 18.04) because of a conflict: viz., BOINC 7.12.0 appears to require libcurl4, which conflicts with libcurl3. But without libcurl3, I cannot run the R Statistical Language, of which I am a heavy user.

I hope there is some way to resolve this dilemma, which surely must affect other R users who would like to participate (or to continue participating) in BOINC.

Thank you.

Perhaps less importance because of the large number of browsers available but the same happens with Opera.

Installing one of BOINC and Opera uninstalls the other. I got around this by installing the developer version of Opera which uses libcurl4.

The following link shows how to have both installed at once but is a little more involved than just installing developer version was for me so I haven't tested it.

Do prior versions of BOINC require older libcurl versions? Mint 19 and Ubuntu 18.04 have BOINC 7.9 in the repository.

Where did you get R from? The package in Ubuntu repo depends on libcurl4 as does the package in CRAN repo.
