On hitting the 'Notices' BOINC then closes a fraction of a second later, I've tried to grab a screenshot of this happening as their is something odd about the display of the buttons on the left, maybe a button cut in 1/2? But very hard to tell as it stays open so briefly. I could use OBS to record a video if that's wanted.

This problem initially happened with v7.10.2, have now updated to 7.12.1 & it still happens.
I tried googling it & found nothing relevant.
When BOINC shuts off, the tasks continue to run, & when restarting BOINC, it restarts instantly without problems.
Currently running SETI & LHC, although I don't think it's relevant to my problem.

Something I think worth mentioning, as it happened in a very similar time frame, but might be utterly irrelevant. Is that a game I play (Elite Dangerous) now fails to load with a 'Exception initialising application: Class not registered (exception from HSRESULT: 0x080040154 (REGDB_E_CLASSNOTREG))' error. I also updated Warcraft 3 from a very old version to the recent latest (only change made since ED stopped loading).
I have run SFC, netframe fix, spyware & virus scan to try to fix this. If you want more details about this ongoing issue see this thread. https://forums.frontier.co.uk/showthread.php/439115-Can-t-launch-ED-Exception-initialising-application-Class-not-registered

What you can try is to delete the contents of your notices map - it's a sub-map of the BOINC data directory, so in your case it's at L:\DC\BOINC\Data\notices - and then restart BOINC.

I will ask the developer who does most of the GUI these days if he has an idea.
One thing, you did allow BOINC Manager and the client through your firewall (on TCP 31416)?
One other thing, which tab are you on when you switch to Notices? Or does it happen from all other tabs?
The Notices tab doesn't have buttons, btw.

When you switch to Simple View (via the View menu) and then click on Notices, does it open normally there?

Although you are only running two projects at the moment, your computer is attached to several more, and the client will attempt to fetch notices from those projects too.

I would, first of all, suspect POGS, as the project has closed down and the old server may be responding in unexpected ways.

To help us work out what the problem might be, I'd appreciate it if you could back up your account_pogs.theskynet.org.xml file (in the BOINC data directory), and then 'Remove' the POGS project. If that makes the problem go away, we can use the backup file to test further. If the problem continues, we could try other projects the same way, but I think there's less likely to be a problem with the live projects.

I heard back from the developer. He asks you to check the contents of the srderrgui.txt file.
This file can be found in two places, one in the data directory, the other in %APPDATA%/BOINC (fill that in in the Start->Search option). Check in either place if the file holds data and if so, which holds the newest. Then post that here.

Thanks for the replies guys :).

Richard
Backed up & removed POGS, no change.

Ageless

Re BOINC & firewall, I actually don't remember what I've done there, I've been running BOINC since SETI classic was killed off ;), obviously this OS isn't that old, but it is at least 4yrs old! Anyway, BOINC had been running fine on it for years until about last week. The firewall isn't flagging anything about BOINC being blocked. Never needed to do anything with the router before for BOINC.

Notices tab will kill BOINC regardless of which tab preceded it.
Not tried simple view, had forgotten about that! ;), I'll try it now.......same affect, hitting the Notices button kills BOINC.

Did you typo re srderrgui.txt? Because I don't see that at all, but I did find stderrgui.txt.
The one in the Data directory was last modified 3yrs ago, the 1 in appdata was modified this month & is 1217 KBs! So best I don't try to post all that here! Lol.

Thanks for noticing the typo and thanks for the log. We have the developer looking in now.

Well, I've tried a few of my Windows 7/64 machines, and they all display notices properly - no crashing. To track this down may require running a debug version of the Manager to show exactly where the problem occurs. Ideally, the debug version should be compiled on the same machine as the release version, but that may be a problem - the developer concerned is flying to Europe (to the UK, as it happens) this weekend for a conference. That may delay things.

Ok, no worries, maybe I can say hi to him/her ;).

Interestingly, in the support ticket I have ongoing for Elite Dangerous, Frontier have said 'The launcher uses Windows' own temporary internet storage....'
Maybe BOINC & ED are being affected by the same elusive problem?? (The launcher won't load & throws up an error window saying - Retrieving the COM class factory for component with CLSID{8856F961-340A-A96B-00C04FD705A2} failed due to the following error: 80040154......)

Isn't their an older debug version of BOINC I could run on my machine? The problem was occurring with 7.10.x too......

Debug builds aren't usually made unless - like now - someone wants to track down a specific problem. I can make a debug manager at v7.12.1, if you're game? It would be built with VS2013 - the release builds are kept at VS2010 for Windows XP compatibility - so would need a couple of updated DLLs as well. I think the developer would prefer to see the callstack trace from current code, rather than an earlier version.

1. Are you using the Windows firewall?
2. What is your anti-virus software?
3. Do you have the BOINC programs directory excluded from active scans by the AV?
4. Has anything changed on your system between the last well working version and now?
5. What was the last well working version?
6. Have you tried reinstalling that version?

I noticed in the dump a mention of Avast. Have you tried disabling it when you do the install? Overzealous virus scanners are known for causing all sorts of problems like this. Did it quarantine the installer, or maybe it just blocks it when you run the installer.

I very much doubt that Avast could do (or prevent) anything at installation time that would cause this problem: it would be more likely to prevent whole chunks of BOINC (client, manager) from being installed or from functioning at all.

But you're right to suggest it could be implicated. Modern anti-virus products don't just scan files after they've landed on your hard disk: they also monitor internet traffic, and prevent things they don't like from reaching their destination. Perhaps one of the projects is sending a notice that Avast doesn't like, and the manager crashes when it tries to parse Avast's human-friendly warning that the download has been blocked? I've had BOINC complain (but not crash) that it can't parse the human/browser friendly message that my router sends to tell me that my internet connection is down.

I've been searching through Github to see what Manager crashes have been addressed in the past. I found

#2165 BOINC Manager crashes when language is Spanish (faulty translation format)
#1210 BOINC Manager crash - Statistics Tab - Clicking "All projects (sum)" while a project hasn't initialized
#2557 Mac: Patch wxWidgets 3.1.0 to fix BOINC Manager crash on OS 10.6.
#1304 Sometimes Images in Notices can crash BOINC Manager
#1311 BOINC manager crashes while attaching to project under Greek windows OS
824b3e7 Manager: don't crash if GUI RPC returns empty reply ... though it's not clear how this could happen.

All of these have been fixed, but they're food for thought. In particular, the last one might be similar to my hypothetical Avast problem. It might be worth disabling Avast's "Internet Shield" (or whatever they call it) component before clicking the notices tab, and seeing if it still crashes.

To amplify that previous thought.

BOINC says:
21/07/2018 12:38:49 | SETI@home | update requested by user
21/07/2018 12:38:53 | SETI@home | sched RPC pending: Requested by user
21/07/2018 12:38:53 | SETI@home | Sending scheduler request: Requested by user.
21/07/2018 12:38:54 | SETI@home | [error] No start tag in scheduler reply
21/07/2018 12:38:54 | SETI@home | [sched_op] Deferring communication for 00:01:04
21/07/2018 12:38:54 | SETI@home | [sched_op] Reason: can't parse scheduler reply

My router says:

My eyeballs say that a telecoms cable is unplugged ;-)

But the notices tab didn't crash the manager.

Because I need to check my GoogleDrive ready for the conference, I've popped up a debug copy of BOINC Manager v7.12.1 for Windows, if anyone wants to give it a try.

This one (64-bit only) was compiled with VS2013, and the runtime DLLs - debug versions where appropriate - and the pdb file are all included in the zip: it should run if you just unpack these files into a separate folder and run boincmgr.exe from there.

You can only have one copy of the Manager running at a time, so exit your standard manager before using this one (leave the client running so you've got something to test with!). Otherwise, use the /m switch on the command line to allow multiple copies.

Yea sure, thanks :) - will try it
Disabling Avasts shields made no difference.

Ageless

1. Yes, & for years
2. Avast, also for years ;)
3. No, never have done
4. Updated Warcraft 3 from a very old version, regular windows 7 updates
5. 7.10.?, which also suffered the Notices tab crash
6. No, because of above

***********************************

Btw folks, I'm increasingly wondering if the problem that's affecting Elite Dangerous is affecting BOINC.
My support ticket with them has reached the conclusion that some part of windows, specifically IE 11 is corrupt, even though IE11 works.
We tried re-installing MS C++ instals - no change, we tried uninstalling IE11 via windows update list, it is unable to, also tried via cmd line & it was still unable uninstall all of it, citing 'access denied' inspite of running it in admin mode.
So we came to the conclusion I need to re-install windows, but if this debug BOINC can point to an unregistered DLL etc, then maybe I can register it with regsvr?
I'll give more details on the above later, if needed?
