From the research I have done this seems to be an issue the latest BOINC. If I install Opera it removes BOINC and vice versa.
I believe this is due to a library incompatibility but don't really understand it. If I install the development version of Opera the problem goes.
Is there an alternative simple solution that allows the current release of Opera to be used alongside BOINC?

That usually means package dependencies have conflict. A GUI package tool might be able to tell you what the conflict is but I don't know how because I rarely use them. A sudo apt install opera from Terminal should list conflicting packages.
