Boinc 7.8.3
Win 7
Rosetta
Einstein

I keep getting "Not requesting tasks: don't need (not highest priority project)" for Rosetta and Einstein today.

I haven't had any projects running for a number of days.

Any ideas? Should I check anything?

I usually for a few years without any problems, so I have forgotten even rudimentary setup skills, e.g,, disk space, cpu, etc. They look fine to me.

Does it have any work in cache?
Can you run the rr_simulation flag for a while? (BOINC Manager, Advanced view, Options, Event log options, check rr_simulation, OK (or Save).
For 'a while' is one round if work is in cache. Please disable this option after one or two rounds, as it can take up quite a bit of the log.

Every one of the 'not highest priority project' is from an 'update requested by user'. Try just letting the computer stand idle for 10 minutes - don't touch mouse or keyboard, don't run either of your exclusive apps - and see if it will ask CPDN (fails, offline), Malaria (dead project), and finally reach one of the live ones.

Why would a manual request not get tasks yet a short time later when the timer is up it gets work?

I've seen this happen too sometimes even when the project is the only one active (although I suspect BOINC doesn't differentiate here for NCI) or even the higher priority one.

Doing a manual request on a single project may get 'not highest priority' because a different project has higher priority and is fetchable.

If you allow all projects to fetch at will, then higher priority projects will be tried first. If they fail, then lower priority projects will be tried while the higher priority projects are inaccessible (server requested backoff, or suchlike).

Removing Malaria Control would be a positive step as well as the project ended a number of years ago and will not be coming back.

It will reduce the calculations and scheduling that BOINC is trying to do for your system.

I've had the 'not highest priority project' before when I had several projects set to receive work but were currently not sending out work or nothing for the app I had selected. It's the dumb way BM handles and balances the resource share between projects. NNW or suspending the idle projects allowed me to receive work on the projects that did have work available.

I ran rr_simulation along with Run Always and things started working, it requested three projects.

As soon as I went back to Run based on preferences, it went to Suspended while computer in use, as expected, but it stayed that way even after computer not in use for the 30 minutes I designated.

Is there some reason Boinc would not detect that the computer was not in use for 30 minutes?

Detecting 'computer in use' is usually described as interaction with the mouse or keyboard, but I think it will actually detect activity on any HID (Human Interface Device). There have been reports that if a high-sensitivity device like a gaming controller is connected to the computer that can generate false positive signals which get detected as 'in use'.

No. That's what I can't figure out. I can be away from the computer for hours and it still doesn't start BOINC projects.

This is a home computer. Standard keyboard. Standard mouse. BOINC has run fine for several years.

If I click Run Always, it starts right up.

Is boinctaskstray.exe running (in Windows Task Manager)? Despite its name, this file is necessary for correct idle detection.
Do you have differing power options under Windows? Where you don't allow (USB) Human Interface Devices to power down, or not allow them to wake the computer?

(Edit: Richard's right)

Yes, boinctray.exe is running.

No special power options running. I shut down manually every night.

Self-inflicted wound.

I put erkn.exe in the Exclusive Applications area.

I thought that would prevent Boinc from running when I was running a scan.

It did that...and more.

Being an antivirus program, it runs all the time, in background if not in an active scan.

That's why I got Suspending computation - computer is in use all day long.

I deleted ekrn.exe from Exclusive Applications.

Rosetta and Climate prediction are running just fine now when computer is idle.
