Windows 10 Fall Update (1709?) wiped BOINC
The program itself (manager) is still there but it has cleared ALL the projects data.

Any ideas or am I unlucky with just another craptastic MS deployment??

I had one machine update with no issues. I didn't even notice much of a change. The only weirdness was I wanted to schedule the reboot and then I never got that option to come up until after it booted... -_-

Was the data folder erased?

(This is why I have updates set to delay on my other machine because twice their updates FUBAR'd my system. MS tech support was useless. Had to cut them off because they started installing old drivers on my system that had nothing to do with the problems. Ironically, I researched the issue myself and found the solution after some digging.)

Had the same issue with the same Windows update. Boinc is installed on a secondary hard drive. The data folder is there, but the Manager has lost the projects and therefore the link to the data. Is there a way to link the manager back to the data that is already on the machine?

Tried connecting to a new project and the new data was copied to the primary hard drive rather than the secondary one. It seems the update cause BOINC to disassociate with the secondary hard drive.

You could reinstall Boinc like this:
Run the Boinc installer (as administrator) and choose adcanced/custom options. Make a new folder for Boinc Program. You can also choose that old Projects Data folder to be the data folder. I guess that should link them properly again.

if everything is working well once you run Boinc then you could just delete the old Boinc Program folder, because it wouldn't be needed anymore. Though, if you had manually editet cc_config.xml on your old Boinc installation you would need to redo those edits again on the new Program folder.

Thanks Richie. I got it working again using the ideas you gave and some improv.

I copied the real folders on my secondary drive for safe keeping.

The installer wanted to keep repairing the new version of the Manager and Datafolder on my primary drive. Since it was disassociated completely with my original install I took the risk and uninstalled Boinc. When I reinstalled I was able to select the original folders on my secondary drive. Windows took over a minute to set up permissions to the folder what with all the datasets in it. Manager launched and after some intense disk reading all my projects, datasets, and stats came back up.

Strange that an OS feature update would break something like that. I wanted to add the steps I had to take in case Windows is changing how they handle shortcuts and installations.

There used to be an option which could be put in the cc_config.xml... something like data_dir to tell BOINC where you wanted the client to look, but it's gone from the manual, nothing to even have historical reference. Suspected this is now in the Windows registry
The data_dir option in cc_confog.xml was there for BOINC 5, with partial overlap for BOINC 6.

BOINC 5 would by default put everything, BOINC programs and project files and folders, into the same directory. There were situations where you wanted to splice this into a programs directory and a data directory, so you could use this option for that. From BOINC 6 onwards, the BOINC programs and data directories were already separate, with both their paths saved in the registry.

This was removed in BOINC 7.4.24 (change log)
client: remove <data_dir> option from cc_config.xml
This leads to confusion; e.g. if you do "read config files" it will look for cc_config.xml in the new directory, not find it, and set default options. Also, log files end up in old directory. Also, gui_rpc_auth.cfg will be in new directory, and the Manager won't look there.

I received (was forced to let the update install) the latest Fall Creator's Update for Windows 10. The only problem I see so far is the screen graphics for BOINC (running the SETI@home project) do not show up, but the simple view says it is still running. I'm a computer amateur but can follow instructions. Is this a case where uninstalling/reinstalling BOINC Manager would solve my problem? Or do I need to follow the more extensive advice in these threads? Thanks!

It is quite possible that a number of things are the root of your problems. It would appear that the latest update locks some folders, updates the graphics drivers with sadly degraded versions and turns ON automatic driver update.
First, find out where to turn driver updage OFF. Then check on the SETI forum what driver you should have for yor graphics card anx replace whatever you have with that version (obtaining the new driver from the chipset manufacturer). This may cure your problems.
