I am trying to perform a new install of BOINC manager (done) and reconnect to some projects, but don't remember the password from my pacbell.net email account, and when I search for the <account> <master etc.s </account> information, I have not had any success in the Windows or Windows.old directories.

On the Mac I am running version 7.6.33 of BOINC and MacOS Sierra 10.12.6

Searching for help via the Windows machine landed me at the 'get_passwd.php' page on the setiathome.berkeley.edu site, which tells me to find an entry that begins "<account> <master_url>http://setiathome" and includes a randomized looking authenticator.

The location is supposed to exist in the Event Log, but I have not found it in the Event Log on the Windows machine that was from the previous install of Windows. It may be that I have been trying to reinvigorate my BOINC account through a couple Windows reinstalls, so the Windows machine may not have the info I need.

The Macintosh should have it somewhere. Where do I look?

SETI@Home is down for the next few hours - it's the weekly out(r)age over there.

The authenticator you require is contained in the file

account_setiathome.berkeley.edu.xml
in your BOINC data directory - the root of the folder structure, not the separate SETI@Home project folder.

For machines running the same OS, I'd simply say "copy that file to the other machine, and you'll be attached straight away, automatically". But crossing from *nix to Windows, you may hit formatting problems because of different end-of-line conventions. On a Windows machine, try opening the file in Notepad and looking for normal formatting. If there aren't any newlines, open it in Wordpad instead and save it from there - that auto-converts the line format.

Yes, that is the information found at the page referenced in my initial post.

Where is it?

As I believe I made clear, I probably don't have a copy of the required information anywhere on the Windows 7 machine.

So, how would that do me any good, if I were able to find "the file.?"

Also, thank you very much for your response.

If your mac is attached to SETI, you will have the file. BOINC always has a data directory: the problem is how to find it. If all else fails, restart BOINC and look in the Event Log: the location will be listed around 4 lines down.

Similarly, the Windows machine - once BOINC is loaded and running - will also have a data directory: the same procedure will tell you where it is.

Just copy the file from the machine which has it, to the machine which hasn't got it yet. Any which way will do - local network, USB stick, even email it to yourself. Apart from the possible problem I mentioned earlier with line-ending formats, it should just pick up the settings and start crunching. It's as easy as that.

Thanks again for all the help. Where would I find the Event Log?

I have looked in the Logs directory.

drwxr-xr-x 4 root wheel 136 Aug 29 2016 Xsan

In Diagnostic Reports I find this:

-rw-rw----@ 1 root admin 18811 Oct 23 19:41 setiathome_8.00_x86_64-apple-darwin__opencl_intel_gpu_sah_2017-10-23-194119_The-DealyBob.wakeups_resource.diag

It doesn't appear to contain anything, when opened in VI.

I know just enough UNIX to do some real damage, not, apparently, enough to figure this out.

So, finally remembered about how my computers hide certain files from me, and took steps to remedy that.

Now I have the files in hand. Perhaps one day soon I will be able to attach projects, when I have time. That might be nice. Thanks for all your help and patience.
