I am currently not running any version of BOINC because I attempted to install BOINC 7.8.2 which removes the previous version and the install failed. I did not try to install BOINC as a service. I am running Windows 10 Home. I have been a participant in the SETI@home project since January 3, 2016.

The problem is I ran out of SSD disk space for my C: drive and had to use Windows storage management to extend my disk storage for Windows. Unfortunately, I decided to select the drive (D:) that was previously used for the SETI@home data and the storage management process not only erased the contents but also reassigned the drive letter to R:. In so doing, other drive letters got reassigned. My DVD ROM drive now has the drive letter D: which was previously the SETI@home data drive D:. The BOINC 7.8.2 installer remembers the data storage drive (D:) and folder but when I attempt to change this to the drive letter R: and a new folder, an interruption to the installer occurs and there is no other option than to end the installation.

What to do?

This has been a known problem with earlier versions of BOINC and Windows, and I expect the same procedure will work.

You will need, I'm afraid, to edit the Windows registry, using the tool regedit

Find the following values (this is my custom setup)

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Space Sciences Laboratory, U.C. Berkeley\BOINC Setup]
"INSTALLDIR"="D:\\BOINC\\"
"DATADIR"="D:\\BOINCdata\\"
Change the two path names (the first is for BOINC's programs, the second for data) to match your new drive letters and preferred folder structure.

The information that you have provided has resolved the issue with the BOINC installation.

Thank you very much for your guidance. I applied the changes to the registry and all is well.

Best Regards
