I have attempted to install Boinc 7.8.2 - 64 bit version as a service on a Windows 10 Pro, Version 1703 machine and get repeated failures with the message "Unable to create 'boinc_master' I have searched for this error message and found that there appear to be issues with the current Boinc installation process with Domain Controllers, but I do not operate in that mode. I do have Boinc running on my work machine - also Windows 10 - with no problems, but can't seem to get the package installed at home. Any guidance/suggestions welcome.

The only thing I can think about is that the account with which you install BOINC isn't an administrator. That's required to install BOINC as a service, due to the making of the boinc_master, boinc_projects, and boinc_user accounts. Do know you need to be logged in as an administrator, it cannot be done (as far as I know) via temporary elevation to administrator via UAC.

The account I am attempting to install from is an Administrator account - and I have confirmed that it is recognized as such.

When I look at the Users, the boinc_master is shown, but the account's folder is shown as read only and hidden in its properties. I have tried changing this to give access and while Windows says it is doing so, the account is always reported as read only. I suspect this is where the issue is, but I can't seem to get the change in properties to stick.

Specific Windows directories are all read-only. The directory itself is, all the files and folders therein aren't necessarily read-only.

From this MS Support page:
Unlike the Read-only attribute for a file, the Read-only attribute for a folder is typically ignored by Windows, Windows components and accessories, and other programs. For example, you can delete, rename, and change a folder with the Read-only attribute by using Windows Explorer.

The Read-only and System attributes is only used by Windows Explorer to determine whether the folder is a special folder, such as a system folder that has its view customized by Windows (for example, My Documents, Favorites, Fonts, Downloaded Program Files), or a folder that you customized by using the Customize tab of the folder's Properties dialog box. As a result, Windows Explorer does not allow you to view or change the Read-only or System attributes of folders. When a folder has the Read-Only attribute set it causes Explorer to request the Desktop.ini of that folder to see if any special folder settings need to be set. It has been seen where if a network share that has a large amount of folders set to Read-only, it can cause Explorer to take longer then what is expected to render the contents of that share while it waits on the retrieval of the Desktop.ini files. The slower the network connectivity to the share the longer this process can take to the point where Explorer may timeout waiting for the data and render nothing or appear to hang.

(And while that page says it is for previous Windows versions, it's the same behaviour for Windows 10)

Can you do:
- Start->Search, type cmd.exe
- When it finds cmd.exe, right-click and choose "Run as administrator"
- Acknowledge
- type net user and hit Enter
--> tell me the output?
- type net localgroup and hit Enter
--> tell me the output?

If you want it to output to a file, you can do:
net localgroup >> c:\tmp\lg.txt
net user >> c:\tmp\user.txt

And then open those text file in the C:\tmp directory.

Same for me - and I have been attempting to run the installer as an Administrator. My account is an Administrator account, but to be on the safe side I have also right clicked and chosen Run as Administrator. Both ways give me the failure to creat boinc_master message.

Just tried it on my Windows 10 test machine (Dell Optiplex business desktop, with x64 Pro version, updated to current consumer patch level, no insider build).

"It worked for me" - created accounts, required reboot, ran CPU tasks but couldn't find GPU. All as expected.

I removed the previous 'user' installation before testing - this will have been the first attempt at a service installation on this hardware, either under Windows 7 (I have dual boot) or Windows 10. I can try again tomorrow if anyone has anything in particular they want me to test. I always start the BOINC installer by double-clicking the file in the downloads folder - not from the browser/download manager - and I let UAC take care of the Administrator request.
