Message 81395 - Posted: 18 Sep 2017, 18:15:06 UTC

Under Win7 Pro, I upgraded to 7.8.2 yesterday and now I can no longer run PrimeGrid. In a sort of passive-aggressive fashion, I can partially access my account, but what is there is either nonsense or otherwise not usable. Since I've never before had any problem running my tasks I am at a loss knowing just what information (more importantly from where) to show to help debug the nature and cause of the problem. I had thought to revert to an earlier version but hesitate to muddy the water. Suggestions/directions?

--hsm
p.s. I am not currently running Boinc as a service…

What do you mean with this?
Is that in BOINC Manager, or on the Primegrid website?
Can you show a screen shot of what you mean?

No, the PrimeGrid website is fine. What I mean is the information available on the task page of the Boinc detail screen. For instance, I've a number of tasks shown as ready to report but if I switch to the transfer view nothing shows up. Or the vast number of items show with a computational error!?. Not to mention the small problem of only running one job when I have 8 cores??!!! Things like that…

The Transfer tab only shows transfer as they happen, uploads and downloads. When tasks are showing "Ready to report" they have already uploaded.
Can you please press CTRL+SHIFT+E and post the BOINC start up log? The first 50 or so lines will suffice.

Not sure if this true is your case or not... with 7.8.2 x64 installer.

I think the problem *might be* (at least whit I noticed when I installed it few days ago) was that VBOX did NOT SET FIREWALL PERMISSIONS ON MY VISTA PC when installing from the BOINC package. I had to manually add it to the firewall permissions.

Your error is Disk usage limit exceeded for the PPS (Sieve) v1.41 (openclatiPPSsieve) and Couldn't copy file: error 5 for the Sophie Germain (LLR) v8.00
But at the same time your computer also produces valid tasks for both these applications as well. So these are errors you'll have to ask about on the Primegrid forums.

'Disk usage limit' could be the 're-using dirty slot' problem we know about already.

Could be. Why is 7.8.2 still recommended?

I think that was a question I asked myself the night it was released - I got the 'dirty slot' error within 45 minutes, as you know (although we didn't fully understand the details at that stage).

With one set of developers saying "I want to build a new one now", and another set of developers saying "we can do one, but not until December", I think I'm going to repeat my call for a v7.6.35 with VBox v5.1.28 while we argue about it.

Trouble with that is that we don't have a 7.6.35 release branch, so we don't know what's going to be added to it.

We have a v7.6 release branch, and building from it will give you v7.6.33 or, with a single update, v7.6.34 for Mac. Build from that - even use the existing binaries - and update the "with VBox" installers to the new VBox. No change at all to BOINC code or builds while we catch our breath.

Lucky for me I just happen to have boinc_7.6.33_windows_x86_64.exe lying around and—ah…quick relief. I am back up and running! Thanks to WOW (words of wisdom) from all!!

Given the grief some are having with 7.8.2 I'm glad I don't try to be first to update every time.
