I'm running BOINC Manager 7.6.34 on an iMac (Retina 4K, 21.5-inch, Late 2015) on macOS Sierra 10.12.6. My projects (FWIW) are climateprediction.net, GPUGRID, MindModeling@Beta, RNA World, Rosetta@home and World Community Grid.

I have five exclusive applications set - Alchemy Viewer, FirestormOS-Releasex64, Nicecast, Second Life and Skype. Three of them - the three virtual-world viewers - don't make BOINC Manager pause. I have never edited or changed any of their names, and all their names show correctly in the Exclusive Applications window.

The other applications, Nicecast and Skype, make BOINC Manager pause as expected.

Any idea what this could be about?

That's the answer! editing the config file manually :-) The app names differ from their process names.
