Another triumph for the free market.

Energy firm ceases trading after ban

Read the story. They were banned for crap customer service, which is odd - customer service (billing, accepting payments, issuing refunds) is all that they do. The actual gas and electricity is delivered direct to people's homes by wholesalers, through an infrastructure created while the industries were nationalised.

So, yet another carcass for the lawyers to pick over. Presumably the directors will walk away scot free ("Limited Liability", and all that). According to the broadcast version of this story, there have been nine failures recently - I didn't catch exactly when they started counting.

So that's nine sets of programmers, nine website designers, nine call centre teams, nine advertising agencies, nine compliance teams, nine regulators offices, all working themselves out of a job.

And for "customer choice"?

  • [Customers] will be told which supplier is taking on their gas and electricity service, and from that point they will be told about their new tariff.
  • [Customer credit protection] costs are claimed by the new supplier from an industry levy. On the rest of us.

Sadly I am almost sure you are right. If the directors were banned from having any directorships for ten years following such demonstrations of incompetence, perhaps they might be a bit more careful.

Just saw that & went: OUCH.

Been with them 27 months & compared to previous (dual fuel) providers, saved £297 in total.

Just left wondering which of the big 6 will take over. :-(

Got home from hospital around 18:00 yesterday & see I've got mail. Economy Energy stating that new supplier will be E.on from 23/1/19. Letter dated 27/12/18.

I think I read somewhere that a trillion dollars worth of assets have already been shifted out of the UK ahead of the vote. Sadly, I suspect their confidences might be well-placed :/

Oh, and happy new year politics thread :)

edit: that includes you too Sirius :) and everyone else here of course

And a motion of no confidence in the Government tabled tonight, to be debated and voted on tomorrow.

Under normal circumstances, that would lead to a General Election next month. But these are not normal circumstances.

Who knows? Given that those rejecting the deal were a mix of remainers and hard Brexiteers, all I can safely predict is that the level of venom between the two groups will continue at its current high level or even increase along with dishonest statements from both. I think we are still a ways off from anything happening and the recrimination/blaming that will follow.

I'll start checking the stowaway places in my car so it becomes a habit then. Against those that still want to travel there from Africa, and those who want to leave before the 29th of March. ;-)

"This house does not have confidence in Her Majesty's Government."

How many MP's were lying when they voted on that motion?
