I have received a PM from Chris which will remain private, but is so wrong on so many levels that I won't encourage him by replying.

And I'll take another timeout from this thread, too. See you all on the other side of the UK General Election.

Every political thread has an offensive gad fly or two, that's the norm. What is not the norm as I see it are personal attacks on the mods. Usually it is just bickering among the posters. Or as our obese great leader with small hands would say, sad so very very sad.

Opinions/views are one thing but objections, especially those that have no bearing on the topic being discussed is another matter. Unless one is visually impaired, one of the most silly objections seen is this: -
Considering that a particular person chooses to have an Irish flag under his avatar at Seti@home

On it's own, can't see anything in there that warrants such objection. However, when seen with this, one can't help wondering...

Isn't that poster a resident in the US yet shows a German flag, so where's the objections on that?

[mod hat off] (This is Jords territory)

Lets perhaps as Jord has asked, draw a line under all the personal attacks, however veiled.

As this is a politics thread perhaps people here can just discuss interesting political points.

Remember someone with a totally different view on how this or other countries should be run in not automatically wrong.

Nor are they automatically non patriotic.

As at other forums I have found the "filtered user" box very handy and quite a stress reliever.[/mod hat off]

Agreed, but the problem with the "filter" button is that regardless the point is there for all to see. Maybe it would be much better if just views/opinions stated instead of silly objections. Maybe then the topics being discussed will be much simpler to debate.

I think that is what I meant, probably not very clear.

Discussion, not name calling, not suggesting the other person should keep quiet because you don't like their views.

Also not trying to blacken the others person name in an effort to silence them.

If you feel strongly argue your point positively, not dismiss the others view negatively. Difficult sometimes, but in my view worthwhile.

Here is a point.

It annoys me very much to see photos of the recent cowardly terrorists splashed all over the news.

To me it also helps their cause. Now I know that the authorities need to let people know who they are, in case there is more information out there, but to me it is an insult to see their names and faces on the same pages as pictures of those they murdered.

Any thoughts on this.

Good points all round.

For the 1st time in 43 years, I'm not positive about voting tomorrow :-(
Only 4 candidates on offer.
Conservatives - Not happy about their attitude towards policing, armed forces, NHS & foreign aid.
Labour - No way do I want to wake on Friday morning heading to Addenbrookes & seeing Diane Abbot as Home Secretary :-(
Lib Dems - As I said previously, did read their manifesto & liked it except for the fact that they have the EU stuck so far up their rectum it's laughable.
Greens - nothing worthy to say about them.

So is it a case of voting for party?

As I said, none this time around inspire me with any confidence :-(

Yes, but I don't want an unscheduled holiday :-)

Other than to agree with you.

seeing Diane Abbot as Home Secretary :-(

Perhaps you wouldn't ;-)

Diane Abbott has "taken a break" from Labour's general election campaign after becoming unwell, Jeremy Corbyn has said.
The labour leader told BBC Breakfast that he would be speaking to his shadow home secretary about her illness.

I will say that the Lib Dems knock the socks off all other parties in local matters, which they excel at. If you have a damn good local Lib Dem candidate then vote for them. If not Vote Tory, it's pretty much a no brainer.
For local matters here, the Liberal Party are hard to knock & as for Reds/Blues, forget it, all they deserve is a dunking in the Nene, preferably in Winter :-)

Out of the 4 candidates here, this is looking the better, only because I don't want a vote to be wasted.

Obviously I don't know Beki Sellick personally, but her credentials seem fine to me.

Same here which is why it's looking like she's getting my vote.
Conservative - S Jackson, playing the system for all it's worth & ducking when he's found out.
Labour - A candidate no one has heard of. A Cambridge city councillor & lawyer. Reading her bio, she puts her faith 1st, so become a priest not a politician!
Green - Huh, never heard or seen them & they want us to vote for them?

One final word on this.
Chris S wrote:
But it is human nature when intellectually overwhelmed to drop onto the back foot and throw insults as the only response back. That's precisely when moderation should step in to call a halt.
You seem to live under the impression that I am 24 hours a day watching this forum only, to see what people are writing here, that I have no life of my own, need no sustenance, sleep or relaxation.

The point where I stepped in yesterday and asked everyone to stop the attacks, was 5 hours, 33 minutes and 8 seconds after your initial provocation. Including in that time is the time I took to do grocery shopping for my mom, cleaning her house, throwing out the plastic and garbage, driving to and fro, putting my own grocery-shoppings in the cupboard and fridge/freezer, eating a sandwich, going out again, talking with my psychologist about my ongoing depression - but that I see things more positive now, coming back home from within the wind and rain, making myself a cup of tea, then watching what was happening on the forums, and writing the post. If I read you right, I should've been there at 8:35 am to reprimand you for being provocative.

Maybe that you should search your own conscience for the solution for next time, and not provoke? Not start with Ah, I wondered when our resident left wing sage and guru, the expert upon world affairs, would surface. or things like So stop knocking the UK, if you don't like living here, go and live somewhere else OK? In the meantime I WILL oppose you. I will support home rule for the IOW, the sooner the better. Then we can set up passport control at Portsmouth and Lymngton., without accepting the view others have on those statements, and that those others are in their fullest right to answer you in the way that they did? You and Sirius had enough time to say "okay enough, let's stop it here, before moderation kicks in" but apparently you were 'in the moment', so when I did step in and asked to pipe down you made me the bad guy?

Ah yes, of course, it's because Sirius and Gary are my so-called mates... Only Cheers! is my mate, mate, can't you see that from his new nickname?

I'm locking this thread now, I don't need an answer to this post.
Go post in the new BOINC Politics thread. While you can have heated discussions there, I would urge to ask you all to keep it civil, no attacks on the person whatsoever, only attacks on the substance of the argument.
