I'm not 100% sure if the install script is considerred part of the boinc client.

I had noticed this error slowly filling up the file stderrdae.txt

The workaround is to create the directory, with the correct ownership permissions.

I wouldn't mind forwarding this to behind the scenes, but would need the BOINC version for that and the operating system it happens on. Also, perhaps, how you install it, and if it's Berkeley BOINC or repository.

Using ubuntu 14.04 LTS and version 7.6.31 from locutusofborg PPA.

also ubuntu 14.04 LTS and version 7.2.42 from standard repo.

Both installs following exact instructions in wiki,

sudo aptitude install boinc-client boinc-manager

I have just tried the berkeley installer on this page, currently at 7.2.42 - it does create the locale directory on install, so it looks like a repo issue to fix.

While I look at that page it could be better if a list of the "recommended distribution-specific packages" appear before the big eye catching button.

Debian has patched a too low-level function to log error messages if opening a directory fails even when the failure isn't any kind of problem.

The client is trying to check the size of the locale directory so it can report it to GUI as non-project disk usage. Since Debian has locales elsewhere I suppose they could patch out the check.
