Hi.
As you may be aware I have been involved in many solution seeking activities for those who have connection problems. Examples being the Cogent de-peering, routing table faults, firewall problems, server error 500 problems .....

There are limits to what can be achieved with so few tools and from such a great distance. Whilst we have helped with traceroute and ping (and scripted these for the Wiki) it often only tells us we have reached a server's tcp stack.

I would like to suggest a server side script that would respond to a ping request. This script would probably be a cgi script for Apache and probably fastcgi at that. The purpose of it being that from a browser page a script can be executed to confirm that communication is taking place between the user's browser and not just the server but a more meaningful part of the server. This would help hugely in diagnosing peoples network problems. From my experince of Boinc projects this would be useful across them all.

I hope I have posted this in the right place. Move it by all means if I got it wrong.

Thanks
Ian

I think you misunderstood the reply!! :).

Why not float your suggestion on the boinc_dev list rather than here? My guess is that mainly users rather than developers are paying attention here.

Cheers,
Gary.

Yeah I might just do that thanks.

Just thought they actually meant *Please use these boards only for messages related to BOINC software: questions, bug reports, feature requests, etc. *

Oh, I'm sure they actually meant it on the understanding that intelligent users would largely support each other with the prospect that anything really worthy of attention would be pointed out to them by the co-inhabitants of these boards and boinc_dev. I've lurked over there for a bit and been interested to notice the prompt attention that gets given to things of importance. I'd formed the opinion that you know what you are talking about when it comes to networking problems so "over there" just seemed like a more appropriate place.

Good luck with your suggestion.

Cheers,
Gary.
