Hi. I have several systems running Boinc. My latest system simply won't download any project data. This latest system stated as a fresh install of Windows 7 X-64 Professional. After fully patching the OS, I had Microsoft execute the automatic Windows 10 X-64 Professional upgrade. Both initial and upgrade procedures worked without error. I then installed BOINC after downloading from the website. I installed 7.6.2.2 with Vbox (the latest posted). The initial install used Service options. I added a project, SETI in this case. The addition went fine. The "first" update ran and I had one (1) labeled as "downloading". After about a minute, the status changed to Download Failed. I have tried multiple tests. Changed projects to Milkyway, Einstein, Asteroids, as well as SETI. All behave the same way. My other systems running these project continue to work. All OS images are running under VMWare. All are the same network and behind the same FW. Only this one system won't. run.

I went through and fully removed BOINC as a final test. After removal, I removed any registry entry that seemed to relate to this software and deleted all of the directory files. I then install again, but as a client, not a service. No difference in operation. The last items in the log file are below.

Thanks, Bob

A permanent HTTP error on all projects means something is blocking that system from the internet, most probably its firewall. Make sure you allow boinc.exe to communicate with the internet through TCP ports 80 and 443.

And, although you don't mention installing any anti-virus product on your new machine, check whether you have one, and whether it might be blocking the downloads.

After upgrading to 10 did you wait until the OS activation was succesfull and then did you do a "clean install"?

(What I've seen so far the "upgraded only" Windows 10 systems (not yet gone through a clean install) have had a giant spectrum of all sort of strange problems. Many many times those problems have vanished after a clean install.

I personally consider all the "upgraded only" 10 installations to be a completely useless environment for doing anything serious with the computer. Only after giving 10 a "clean install" there will be a healthy, reasonable system to begin with.)

Thanks for all the input. I have tracked down where the blockage is happening but have not totally determined why. On my firewall, I limit web connectivity by country IP address for all activity. I have only a handful of countries enabled like the US/Canada/Western Europe/Japan. By design I block all the rest of the world. If I find a specific URL that access a resource in a blocked country, I can create an exception just for that URL. For the Windows 10 system that I installed as an upgrade to Win 7 and done using the online upgrade path, BOINC does not download any job file unless I unblock all countries. It would appear that this fresh install of BOINC, the upgraded system never ran BOINC before, acts like it is talking to a server located in a normally blocked country. I have checked with some projects (SETI, Einstein, Asteroids and Milkyway) and am told all servers are in the US which is not blocked. None of these project runtime files will load. The system I upgraded from Windows 7 to Windows 10 using the offline upgrade path and that was running BOINC prior to the upgrade, continues to load project files just fine with country blocking on the FW enabled. I find this behavior strange, to say the least. Maybe there is some validation the first time a new system loads project files that is occurring on a system located in a blocked country. I have more testing to do.

Again, thanks to all for the input.

Bob
