Greetings,

I've recently started experimenting with boinc on Fedora Core 4. Boinc is computing all the time in spite of my preference to wait for 5 minutes of inactivity.

The only project I've signed on for so far is climateprediction.net, where I've set the preference to compute only when the system has been idle for 5 minutes or more. Looking in global_prefs.xml it's clear the the local system is aware of the preference.

Boinc doesn't pause computation when I start using the workstation, though. Am I missing something, or is the idle detection in 4.43 not that hot?

There is a setting "Run always" vs. "Run based on preferences" vs. "Suspend" - do you have that set correctly?

In boincmgr, File --> Run based on preferences is checked. If I select "suspend" in that menu, processing does pause. As soon as I select "Run based on preferences" it's off to the races, regardless of whether I'm using the machine or not.

Is the process that's executing and won't pause BOINC or CPDN? If CPDN, you should post on their boards, someone there may have an answer for you; if CPDN, the problem could be either in CPDN not pausing when told to, or in BOINC not telling it to. If BOINC itself is running, and it's taking more than about 5% of your CPU, this isn't something I've seen/heard of, so hopefully someone else will contribute here... I would expect BOINC to use SOME minimal amount of CPU time even when "not active", just to check and see if it should restart processing or not.

If you don't get a specific answer somewhere, you can always try any newer beta versions of BOINC Manager that will run on your system - I'm using 4.72 on Mac and WindowsXP, don't have Linux. This will only help if the problem is actually in BOINC and not CPDN, and if the problem has been fixed since 4.43...

It is the CPDN process, and I have an unsubstantiated suspicion that it's not honoring the stop signal. I'll try the CPDN boards.

I understand that boinc is a platform and not a project, but I'd love to see a more unified front presented to me as a user. Centralized identity management, statistics, and support forums would ease the learning curve substantially.

Some of that centralization is due in the next release. In that release there is supposed to be a new way to attach a new client to all of the projects. We shall have to wait and see how that will work ...
