If the closed projects don't tell that they have closed (there is a projects email list they can email that to), nor the new projects say that they are new and in production, it's no wonder the developers don't know about these things. New projects that are still in alpha/beta stage will generally not be added to the projects list.

So, create a thread in which volunteers (that are more "ready" to projects than developers) can report the closed projects is a bad idea?

I'm not sure when the projects list is updated, but its accuracy depends on input from the science projects. BOINC itself has no control over them rather providing an advertising hoarding for projects that are using the BOINC environment.
The BOINC project itslef does none of the computing, provides no server space, administration staff, science staff etc. to the science projects.

I know that Boinc's admins has no control over the projects.
But, if i'm a "fresh" volunteer (without any experience) and i see the list of projects and connect to one, i'm happy if this project is not closed...
Otherwise i connect to Science United.

Projects which have closed down usually - eventually - make that visible publicly. Either they post a polite notice of thanks on their website, or their domain registration lapses and gets taken over by a spammer.

If you come across one of those, it's worth posting the information to the mailing list Jord mentioned. But a message board thread is an inefficient tool in those circumstances - the people you most want to be aware of and act on the information, are the least likely to read it here.

A lot of times, admins of closed project forget to make that visible and server remain on-line.....for nothing!!
For example, the last message from Citizen Science Grid admin is March 2019 and the last wus are 3 years ago.
And the project is still in the list.

Mailing list? Where??
If the message board is inefficient, i think also mailing list is not so good.

https://groups.google.com/a/ssl.berkeley.edu/forum/?pli=1#!forum/boinc_projects
That gets directly into the inbox of the developers and those project admins that have signed up to that list.

These forums are for volunteers to help people with problems, the developers of BOINC have moved on to Github

I'm currently attached to: Einstein, Rosetta, WCG & LHC.

That notwithstanding, the following projects listed in the BOINC projects-listing are essentially defunct:

Asteroids
BOINC@Tacc
CSG
Cosmology
...

ETC.

I'm not going to waste additional time of mine finding viable projects. The fact is that a significant number of BOINC projects - 2/3's ??? are not viable - in that there is NO activity on the respective BOINC-community message-boards.

One project that I'd be interested in - Folding@Home - seems not to be part of the BOINC community.

Whatever. I'm going to look into getting that Dell T7400 to run. That notwithstanding, nevertheless, all that, and whatnot: there's some issues w/ BOINC project participation.

You BOINC-people look into that, I'll look into this, and we'll see where the twain shall meet.

Professor Ray

You ran Seti for a number of years .. in fact you signed up on May 17, 1999 exactly one day before I did on May 18, 1999. The Milkyway project has been running for about 12 or 13 years now and appreciates people like you and me. Good hard science that is Space related. Take a look maybe you can find some clock cycles for it too.

Thanks

NumberFields@Home is down with what appears to be a hard drive crash.

We hope to have this resolved in the next few days.

We finally got someone in to take a look at the server. After a hard reboot and a check of the file system, things appear to be back to normal.

We are continuing to monitor the system, just in case.

The drive crashed again (keeps dropping into read-only mode). Reboots are not helping this time. We should have the new SSD installed sometime next week.

NumberFields@home should be back momentarily. The project has been reinstalled on the new hard drive and we are about to restore the database.

Asteroids seems to be back up and running. My outstanding results have uploaded and validated or are waiting validation.
Let's hope Cosmology joins back in shortly.
