Hello Fellow BOINCERS,

I am having serious problems with my 64 bit version of BOINC'

Whenever it is running my complete system crashes and also the power is cut from my desktop and I have to turn my desktop on again and reboot the whole system.

This happens constantly and it can occur as much as five times in an hour.

This is extremely frustrating as it takes approximately five minutes for the system to reboot.

I have been a BOINCER since 2010 and have had this problem with different desktop I have used, both with 64 bit and 32 bit machines.

My processor at the moment is the AMD A6-3670 APU with Radeon(tm) HD Graphics.

I am virtually sure that it is the BOINC software which appears to be causing the problem because now I have uninstalled the program my desktop appears to be running without it crashing or the power cutting out.

Does anyone have any solutions to this please. If anyone has they will be my friends forever.

This can happen if your CPU cooling has failed completely - either a fan is broken/disconnected, or there's a build-up of dust preventing cool air reaching the CPU heatsink.

In that case, it isn't BOINC itself shutting down the system, but the extra workload on the CPU when the project science application(s) start up. That can cause the CPU temperature to rise quickly, and - without cooling - trigger a safety shutdown to prevent damage.

If the computer runs stably for long enough after restart for you to open BOINC Manager, try suspending computation, and see if it continues to work with BOINC open but no science applications running. That could indicate either a thermal problem or, as Claggy says, insufficient system power.

Thank you for your replies.

The system is definitely 'meaty' enough to run the program

I have now uninstalled the BOINC program so am unable to supply you with the log but I can say that the program ran well without glitches, of course up until the times the desktop completely shutdown. When I rebooted the PC each time after it shutdown the BOINC program continued to run in the background right up to the time the PC powered off again

Hello Richard,

Thank you also for your reply.

I know there is no problem with CPU overheating as it is 'as cool as a cucumber'.

On top of this I regularly check for dust etc. Build ups.

As I mentioned to Claggy my desktop has plenty enough power to run BOINC. Also as I have now uninstalled BOINC I can't access the Manager.

I would add that since I have uninstalled BOINC my desktop is running as it should and has not powered itself off for two days, as it did with BOINC running which suggests that it is not a temperature problem.

I also run programs which require far more 'oomph' than BOINC.

One final thing, it appears from some posts on the Forum that some AMD Processors can cause problems but although I have seen system crash reports using AMD I have not read any posts which say the desktop simply powers off.

The Boinc Data directory is never deleted on uninstallation, you can find your logs in C:\ProgramData\BOINC (assuming you're used the default installation location), the logs to look at are stdoutdae.txt and stdoutdae.old

Is the PC Blue Screening and Shutting down, Powering down on it's own, Or is Windows Power Saving just putting it to Sleep? (Windows default action)

I'd take a look at your power supply... Make sure it's rated at enough wattage to handle the draw of your system at full load, and make sure you don't have a dud. Otherwise, you may have a motherboard or CPU issue.

Is your computer running at "stock" speed?

IF you have adjusted speeds or voltages, maybe there could be somekind of stability problem remaining. And perhaps that could be solved with just a slight adjustment. BOINC can keep the load constantly at high level. It can be a stress test for the hardware speed settings... far away from "basic" usage-situations at least (many times there being just fast peaks in system load and then plenty of easy time between those peaks).

You said "I also run programs which require far more 'oomph' than BOINC." What type of programs are they? I was just thinking they might be heavy programs, but perhaps they are not loading the system so constantly at high level (like BOINC can do).
