Hello. I am running BOINC 7.4.42 on Win7/64 on an i7-2600 system. I am doing Seti@home, Einstein@home, and Milkyway@home. A couple months ago my ATI GPU died and I replaced it with an NVidia. Since then, I have noticed these errors in my event log: 4/30/2015 10:31:56 AM | Milkyway@Home | Application uses missing ATI GPU 4/30/2015 10:31:56 AM | | app version refers to missing GPU type ATI 4/30/2015 10:31:56 AM | SETI@home | Application uses missing ATI GPU 4/30/2015 10:31:56 AM | | app version refers to missing GPU type ATI 4/30/2015 10:31:56 AM | Einstein@Home | Application uses missing ATI GPU 4/30/2015 10:31:56 AM | | app version refers to missing GPU type ATI BOINC then reports that it is downloading the nVidia tasks, e.g.: 4/30/2015 10:32:28 AM | SETI@home | Requesting new tasks for CPU and NVIDIA GPU I tried removing the project using Project\remove and re-connecting to it using tools\add project in the BOINC manager, but the messages persist. I do not know if there is anything wrong with running BOINC and the projects with what appear to be the incorrect client programs for my new GPU. If it would be better if I were running the correct ones, how do I get the projects to reload the correct versions? Thank you. |

Remove Project will delete everything in the project directory. So are you sure you removed the right project(s)? Are you sure you removed them, not done a reset? A project reset doesn't necessarily remove everything from the project's directory, e.g. app_info.xml files and associated applications will stay in place. In any case, BOINC is complaining that it's got work and an application for the old AMD/ATI GPU and that it cannot do that work on the Nvidia GPU. |

Did you update your Einstein@Home and MilkyWay@Home preferences (in your account on their web sites) to use an NVidia GPU instead of an ATI GPU? I don't know anything about Seti@Home, but I'd suggest checking for a similar setting there. Also check that you new NVidia GPU is supported by the projects, especially for MilkyWay@Home which needs certain features that not all GPUs have. |

Yes, I am sure I did a remove project. I removed all three and had no projects at all under BOINC. I had not located the project data directory when the projects were deleted, so not sure if everything really was deleted. Now that I know where the data directory is, I can force the issue; delete project and then manually remove data files. I may do that if there are no other solutions. Thanks for your help. |

On Milkyway@home, there are no preferences that specify the GPU type. If I look at the systems on my account, they correctly list the nVidia GPU and make no mention of the old one. Einstein@home seems to be down right now so I haven't checked to see if there is any record of my old GPU there. Seti@home did have a preference to use my ATI GPU. I unselected it and saved settings, did a project update then stopped and restarted BOINC. I still get the same messages. Since I see no mention of downloading the application, it seems like it is loaded onto my computer and not being replaced though obsolete. BTW, all projects do seem to be downloading and running nVidia GPU tasks. However, the messages imply they are also attempting tasks which cannot be run. Thanks for your help. |

BTW, all projects do seem to be downloading and running nVidia GPU tasks. However, the messages imply they are also attempting tasks which cannot be run. It's not actually trying to say that, though I can see how you might come to that interpretation. What has happened is that in the past, you were running an ATI card. You have requested work which that ATI card can process: as a result, you were sent both an application (program) and some tasks to process with it. The tasks are long since gone, but your computer still has (or had, until you deleted them manually) the application files, ready for the day when you re-install the ATI card and process more work with it. The messages simply say that BOINC 'remembers' that you have had the capability to run ATI programs: they do not say that BOINC is actually trying to use those programs, or to fetch tasks that would use them. It's untidy, I know: but if you really wanted to get rid of the messages, you would probably have to edit out all references to the former applications from client_state.xml: that's a difficult and delicate process, and I'd advise you not even to attempt it until you've got more experience with BOINC and how it manages its internal affairs. |

Thanks for the clarification. I have not yet had the opportunity to actually remove the old applications so they will remain until/unless I get around to cleaning them up. But now I know nothing is actually wrong or wasting precious gigaflops ;-) Dave |

Thanks for posting this. It clarified the issue I was having with the "missing GPU" error after I replaced my video card. The fix is definitely removing the project and then restoring it again. |
