How does BOINC decide to ask for tasks???

Tuna Ertemalp Send message Joined: 23 Dec 13 Posts: 45	Message 61542 - Posted: 11 Apr 2015, 14:27:25 UTC So, I spent a few days draining one of my machines of any jobs it had by setting "No New Tasks" on all 39 projects it is churning for and let it run for a few days. Eventually it had 0 tasks left. I did whatever I needed to do with the machine, and then set all projects to Resume. I sort of expected that many tasks would start trickling in since this machine is set to have 10 days of buffer, it has plenty of cores and memory and disk space, and out of 39 projects surely many would have tasks to be churned on that would come rushing down. Nope. Nothing. Not even many projects get asked (only VolPex, LHC and GPUGRID got contacted). Changing from NoNewTasks to Resume did not trigger an Update on the projects even though there were no tasks running and nothing to be run locally on the machine. Shouldn't it have? Then I forced the issue by selecting all projects and clicking Update. Even that ended up only getting 40 tasks from TN-Grid, and nothing from the remaining 38 projects, claiming either "Project has no tasks available" or "Not requesting tasks: don't need (CPU: not highest priority project; NVIDIA GPU: not highest priority project)" or "Not requesting tasks: don't need (CPU: not highest priority project; NVIDIA GPU: job cache full)". Mind you, each project has a weight of 100, so none of them is the highest priority, and the GPU job cache was not at all full since there were no work units running/queued. This machine is a work horse with good specs and good history, so I had expected a flood of tasks. Eventually, 8hrs later, it has finished all 40 TN-Grid tasks it got, and received some more tasks from Moo! and NumberFields. Well, there's a debug log flag that answers the question in the title: <work_fetch_debug> Work Fetch runs after a maximum pf 60 seconds (some events trigger an earlier cycle, but 'Allow new tasks' isn't one of them). You'll notice that all the projects contacted in the first few cycles have been at the request of the projects - they request the periodic callback, but it doesn't guarantee that the client needs more work from that project at that moment. If we had the debug data available, we could work through all the projects in turn, seeing where they came in priority order, whether they had applications for your hardware, whether they were allowed to fetch by your project preferences, whether they were subject to any of the various backoffs, etc. etc. - but the mass manual update has consigned that to history. With that many projects attached, I'd only enable that one flag to answer your opening question. It's very verbose - you'll have a lot to work through. Then, turn it off again, and you can play with the others if you have other questions later. Since you're running v7.4.42, you have the handy little 'Event Log diagnostic flags' dialog on Ctrl+Shift+F, so it's easy to pick and choose. ID: 61548 ·
