Talk:Attach to project wizard

I don't really see the point of having that huge XML here. Nicolas (talk) 02:39, 6 May 2008 (UTC)

I would prefer to put it in a compressed file, upload it to the wiki and provide a download link but I haven't discovered a way to do that. Any suggestions? Dagorath (talk) 03:43, 6 May 2008 (UTC)
The current wiki configuration allows only certain file types to be uploaded. The wiki docs explain how to allow other file types. If .zip and .tar.bz were added to the list I could compress and upload that huge, ugly XML and perhaps make a download link to it. Dagorath (talk) 12:51, 6 May 2008 (UTC)
Actually that page is outdated. The correct page is here. Dagorath (talk) 13:04, 6 May 2008 (UTC)

Would someone with admin powers please lock this page to prevent the URLs in the XML list from being altered. Thanks. Dagorath (talk) 16:15, 9 May 2008 (UTC)

I still don't see the point of having that XML here, be it inside the wiki page, in a link, or whatever. Nicolas (talk) 17:40, 9 May 2008 (UTC)
Thanks for clarifying. I thought you were opposed to having the huge XML here. I think it would be convenient for people to have an expanded list of projects in the Attach Project Wizard. The alternative, if you want an expanded list, is to keep bookmarks in your browser that point to several different websites that may or may not have a complete list of projects. Then you have to copy and paste the link into the wizard. It's not difficult to do all that but plugging the list into the wizard and having the link come up in the wizard is more convenient. If you don't think the content is appropriate for the wiki then that's another matter for discussion but at least now you know why I created the page.Dagorath (talk) 18:22, 9 May 2008 (UTC)
Providing an updated project_list.xml sounds like a good service for stats websites to give. Nicolas (talk) 18:44, 9 May 2008 (UTC)
If stats sites want to provide that service then I applaud them but they need not be the only provider. And if it's implemented such that users need to subscribe to a project manager then we definitely need an alternate source. I've found the project managers unwieldy and so will other users. What is needed is one standard list of projects that have been scrutinized to ensure the listed projects meet at least minimal criteria. But that's a story unto itself and probably off-topic here. If you want to delete this page then do so, you won't get any complaints from me because there's more than 1 way to skin this cat. If you want to retain some influence over what goes into the list then maybe leave this page intact. If you leave it intact then within the hour I'll be replacing the ugly XML with links to downloads hosted by our friend Bill G. Dagorath (talk) 19:44, 9 May 2008 (UTC)
Dave A just informed me that the client refreshes all_projects_list.xml every once in a while so that settles it... my idea won't work. I'll delete most of the content on the page except the image, maybe the image can be used on another page. In a few days, after others have had a chance to read this discussion and know what happened, I'll delete the page and the link to it. Dagorath (talk) 21:18, 9 May 2008 (UTC)
