credits done right, and auto updates of BOINC software.
11:00 PM UTC, July 12 2006
it seems to be getting complicated for the lay person. And get the manager to do something significant to tell you when gone into EDF. ie change colour
11:09 PM UTC, July 12 2006
The forums need to have a facility to change a post title a different color when a project Deve replies to a message such as what happened on the SETI classic forums. BOINC 5.6 is definatly needed in order to get more people on to the project. AMS needs to be fully developed to work correctly - Unique usernames is a must, vurrently PrimeGrid, WCG are the only projects to do this and BAM as an account manager does this
11:22 PM UTC, July 12 2006
I love tracking the Technical News section of the BOINC site but you've left that section lay fallow for months. It would be wonderful for you BOINC folk to expand on that in a developer's blog. Love to read that.
The single biggest feature you folk could add is a centralised console I can use to track the status of individual BOINC clients on my network, and get comparitive realtime statistics on whether BOINC is running, the relative CPU power being brought to bear, the location that client is set to run as and so on. The BOINC web control panel or third party account managers are entirely inadequate. Such a centralised control utility, incorporating mDNS technology (Bonjour for us Mac heads) would be ideal in ensuring all my clients are operating optimally.
1:45 AM UTC, July 13 2006
My computer uses hyperthreading there is a problem when two wu's finish at the same time only one will start next.
when there are a few results to upload boinc.exe seems to steal extra resources from the projects up to 50% of the processing power.
1:58 AM UTC, July 13 2006
The survey should split the fair and quick for credits.
The CPU scheduler and work fetch policies can be improved.
Less CPU time during a server RPC would be useful.

3:18 AM UTC, July 13 2006
better feedback of the result of the findings or even the lack of them.
As it is now, we don't know anything, just crunching on ... blind :o(
3:27 AM UTC, July 13 2006
Have centralized forums for all projects somewhere, instead of separate forums on each project site. It would be much easier to keep up with them that way.
6:09 AM UTC, July 13 2006
The 'nationality' font should be smaller
7:12 AM UTC, July 13 2006
In addition to having to enter the project address, allow a drop down/something similar with all the 'major' projects already listed (for major read those on website - the info could be in a daily/weekly whatever download)
10:03 AM UTC, July 13 2006
Go on in the same manner. Improve the scheduler for better work requests.
10:32 AM UTC, July 13 2006
I think that the new scheduling system is an improvement but may cause problems to people with many projects attached. Their resource share will be low and the scheduler will assume that all projects are being run. This will cause it to run long projects like Climate models for long periods to avoid missing deadlines. In fact some of the projects might be down and others might only be run occasionally. Could the calculation be redone to ignore those projects suspended or set to get no work?
A more subtle approach (for a future release) might be to set the scheduler to increase the resource share of those projects calculated to be in danger of missing deadlines and display this figure in red with a pop up balloon saying why it has been increased.
The credit system is a great worry and the flame wars on projects that have tried to resolve it. My views would take up too much of your time but they do show how some people care nothing about the science and I fear that people will soon try to spoof the very simple result texts on some projects and completely undermine the data bases wreaking all the work done. Is it possible to have some checking of the reported CPU time to check that it has been crunched and encryption of the results before reporting? We do need to keep the dedicated crunchers on side if all the work is to be done.

10:47 AM UTC, July 13 2006
Personally I like participating in new projects. But I know people who are put off by the increasing number of projects based on the Boinc platform, leading to ever more scattered resources.
1:59 PM UTC, July 13 2006
Still missing something like old SetiQueue, proxy-like software with nice map of sky with coordinates of crunched units. But understand, this is project dependent.
Note: Every info's are correct, except one - I can't connect with my company notebok in the factory, but continue crunching. Just downloads and uploads have to do at home. Last version which can communicate through company FireWall wac BOINC 4.71.
Have a nice day,
Spok
12:13 AM UTC, July 14 2006
I think that software should be better optimized for different CPUs.
12:18 AM UTC, July 14 2006
Better scheduling of debt. Even with the LTD/STD system it downloads too much or not enough work and does not honor resources as well as I feel it should.
Multi-CPU utilization. I look forward to the work that Mr. McLeod is doing re: switching applications, etc.
12:38 AM UTC, July 14 2006
Disclose it make it more beautfull (atractive), say that is an
cheap and healpfull way of doing good.
12:57 AM UTC, July 14 2006
I tried to convince several friends to run Boinc on their computers, most of them didn't want because of security concerns and because they never heard about the project. I think if the project was better known, and if they were clearly informed about security and stability concerns, many would have accepted.
1:11 AM UTC, July 14 2006
- automatic updates of boinc itself, not just project software
- easier signup/management UI
1:33 AM UTC, July 14 2006
1. a fair-enough cross project credit standard
2. simple and easy-to-use UI for novices
3. periodic email newsletters about project progress (just like what the WCG team has done, mustn't be too frequent!)
2:09 AM UTC, July 14 2006
Up-to-date websites with project news.....
Decent moderation of the message boards
Ability to ban users from the message boards but not the project (leave it to them to decide whether to quit)
Better user-project relations with regards to user created optimised applications with specific reasons given if the projects don't want them used.
2:11 AM UTC, July 14 2006
for things like RSS, read the spec and implement them properly, use web standards, enable caching of content (at least the ability to return a HTTP 304 response), an RSS feed for the tech news, just throughness
if time is limited, then make it easy for others to submit improvments
2:19 AM UTC, July 14 2006
More projects. And more updates on how the science stuff is going. I love to know how mine and others computers are helping.
2:34 AM UTC, July 14 2006
better temp control.
2:56 AM UTC, July 14 2006
Notification of updates should be available in the client instead of having to check the website occasionally
2:57 AM UTC, July 14 2006
- it would be fantastic if the boinc project client would upgrade itself (not just the science component), but the boinc framework component, so i wouldn't have to update them manually.
- maybe some sort of remote management software i could run to monitor my boinc clients: even those behind firewalls. it wouldn't have to be in real-time, but just something that occasionally let's me know the clients are still running.
3:23 AM UTC, July 14 2006
when there is a newer version of BOINC, the software can update itself automatically
3:59 AM UTC, July 14 2006
Better ballence of the crediting system across projects. Better management capibility for large deployments where phisical access isnt always possible. Better security of the boinc system.
4:25 AM UTC, July 14 2006
Clarification that hard drive should NOT be allowed to enter Sleep Mode.
Finding a way to entice more scientifically serious people to projects [maybe a survey :-) ] rather than those who see it more as a game and being disappointed in how many 'points' they 'score' and drop out after a very short period of time.
4:44 AM UTC, July 14 2006
my seti programs have gone from running 2hrs to 18 hrs is there any way to cut down on running times. as i like the fast turnaround times but that stopped when seti changed to beta . as i don't know how to change refs .
5:27 AM UTC, July 14 2006
if there is a boinc update, users of older version ought to be able to know automaGically
5:36 AM UTC, July 14 2006
Current credit system is not fair. Climateprediction.net releases WUs that are too big.
6:05 AM UTC, July 14 2006
It would be nice if BOINC had an auto-update feature for the BOINC client itself.
Another thing that would be nice is a feature to work on one specific work unit or project by hitting one button and not hitting the Suspend project button on every other project.
6:14 AM UTC, July 14 2006
Would like to have the option of been able to change the background colour of the messages tab in the Boinc manager. The white background is hard on my eyes. Maybe the option to change fonts as well. Can any more data and search info be added to the screensaver. Would also like the option of removing the seti@home logo from the screensaver. Also, web cams might add added appeal for the various boinc projects, attracting more users.
6:15 AM UTC, July 14 2006
more information about projects, their status and progress. also more information about currently running workunits on the pc.
6:25 AM UTC, July 14 2006
more screensavers, possibility to force execution of a project (when it is completed at 98% and stops suddently for another project for hours !), developping BURP more quickly, XP or Vista interface, update BOINC program automatically, begin to run after X seconds after starting the computer, to avoid big CPU during the first minutes.
Thanks
6:34 AM UTC, July 14 2006
It would be nice if there were more projects to choose from.
6:40 AM UTC, July 14 2006
Better load balancing when it is running as service. Meaning that when a different user is using the computer BOINC should see that and go to sleep.
6:43 AM UTC, July 14 2006
BAM
security
stability
fix software bugs
(BTW, the Nationality enter field in this form is buggy as well...;-)
7:00 AM UTC, July 14 2006
integrated powersaving modes like speedstep. The whole boinc running only on 50%, or leave always 5% free Prozesorcycles.
7:37 AM UTC, July 14 2006
Keep going :)
7:42 AM UTC, July 14 2006
more publicity to spread this project, continuing to develop boinc, localized web sites and message boards (not team's board but official web sites translated n varoius languages. for this, more and more people are needed but it could be nice)
7:56 AM UTC, July 14 2006
RSS feeds don't seem to work properly with IE 7
7:58 AM UTC, July 14 2006
My suggestions go to the message boards :-)
8:21 AM UTC, July 14 2006
Grant credits on work done (like Seti, Climate) rather than based on benchmarks.
8:27 AM UTC, July 14 2006
Solving bugs, more influence of developers and users building better boinc versions, more features in boinc forum (delete messages(double post))
8:50 AM UTC, July 14 2006
BOINC should become usable for offline-computers. Server is busy isn't the one and only possible reason for failed serverconnects. The user should decide if and when another attempt makes sense or not.
8:54 AM UTC, July 14 2006
* standardized credit as it is currently being discussed on dev-mailinglist
* try to implement a function to snapshot memory of applications and restore them so projects having difficulties doing checkpointing can be run along with multiple other projects without complications
9:04 AM UTC, July 14 2006
French website...
9:09 AM UTC, July 14 2006
A manual scheduler button ("Run This Now"), for demonstration.
A way of zeroing all debts.
9:10 AM UTC, July 14 2006
More informations about project/calculus (% contribution to the project, estimated time remaining to the end or to the next step in the project, benefits of my results/others,...)
Everything can be useful to monitor/measure with more accuracy my contribution on the project...
9:12 AM UTC, July 14 2006
You should pay more attention to suggestions and improvements from crunchers!
9:23 AM UTC, July 14 2006
The credit leveling between project is NOT wanted!!!
Leave it the way it was and drop the fpop counting it sucks!
9:42 AM UTC, July 14 2006
Easy to see/find indicators of things like EDF mode (you have to search messages now to find out for sure) & projects debt.
10:15 AM UTC, July 14 2006
The most important thing for me is that the projects remain on a non-profit base, publish there results and explain to me - as a non-scientific user - what my pc is doing and what are the goals of the project.
Furthermore, it is important that the news page stays up-to-date.
Concerning Seti@home, the idea of a shop is great, but the shipping costs to the European Union are huge, so maybe there could be a distribution center for boinc at cern or together with climateprediction in the UK.
Finally, I have to say that I really love participating in many projects, but you will have to do loads more promotion to give all projects the computational power they need. There are far from enough pcs crunching, so please continue writing articles for the mass media. That's how i got to know about it.

10:19 AM UTC, July 14 2006
More fast projects(fast wus)
10:55 AM UTC, July 14 2006
The Creditsystem isn't very good. I think that should be optimized.
10:55 AM UTC, July 14 2006
More intital advice on the need to back up, certainly in the case of the climate change experiment.
10:59 AM UTC, July 14 2006
I hope that short term and long term debt soon will be included in the boinc mananger, as in a folder. It is important to monitor this easy, when running many different projects.
11:36 AM UTC, July 14 2006
More translations of websites and informations about projects
Automatic update or at least notification
Include CPU limiter
I'd like to run distributed.net on BOINC too.
11:43 AM UTC, July 14 2006
don't use XML too often, especially don't use it where other solutions are better!
11:46 AM UTC, July 14 2006
Implement import/export of work even between different platform (Win->Linux, Mac->Win, etc...).
In this way, people with no permanent Internet acces could participate too.
11:55 AM UTC, July 14 2006
In my opinion, BOINC developers team must write a tools for easy write client software.
11:55 AM UTC, July 14 2006
I would like to see the 'flames' disappear about credits and optimized clients and cheating! I think if we could achieve a more "fair" credit system this would definitely help. I don't know yet how it could be achieved, but my opinion is to have "trickles" (like CPDN uses) for ALL projects. I don't like the current benchmark system because different OS's and processors get different values which do NOT really correspond to the real work they are processing! So I think it would be better to have a defined credit for each WU, just like "trickles". This seems more fair, although you'd need to define how big a "trickle" has to be for each project. But definitely a fast computer would be able to do more trickles, thus getting more credits WITHOUT the errors of a benchmark which isn't always correct for several pc configurations. And, of course, there would be no need for optimized BOINC clients any more, but for optimized project applications! ;-)
BTW: I really like BOINCing and I hope this idea will continue to spread around the world! Greetings from Germany, Cori
12:16 PM UTC, July 14 2006
Better mgmt of CPU time when multiple projects are involved. I kept losing credits because I couldn't finish work units in time.
12:30 PM UTC, July 14 2006
for linux plse provide other projects than seti also show graphics..it is fine to see the different kind off graphics..

12:37 PM UTC, July 14 2006
Nicer screensavers to gather more users who just want a nice looking one. More info about the progress of the research (for example feedback during the computing beyond a simple progress bar).
12:54 PM UTC, July 14 2006
remote management. BAM is a good start. would like BOINCview functionality via bam website. also, cleanup of detached projects. My goal is to get 10,000+ units for each released and/or beta projects. I have done this with 12 projects. However, in my boinc directory I have 200mb+ of files under those projects that I have detached from. how to cleanup that up?
12:55 PM UTC, July 14 2006
Compatibility with Intel Macintoshes...
12:59 PM UTC, July 14 2006
- improve the website codes (I know Rytis from PrimeGrid is already doing this together with you)
- ensuring that no commercial projects misuse BOINC for their purposes (as Shoft did)
That's it. Thanks for BOINC and the possibility to help mankind in this way.
1:09 PM UTC, July 14 2006
The BOINC client is inflexible, there should be more/better ways of overriding the priorities it sets. I am a better judge of the most efficent way of utilising my computers than a piece of software is.
1:13 PM UTC, July 14 2006
Get rid of the credit confusion, it just causes trouble with people who participate for the wrong reasons
1:20 PM UTC, July 14 2006
When Boinc runs on more than 1 user profiles for windows two instances can trigger if both are turned on. This could affect Boinc on continuing a task. One would have to log the other user off and restart boinc in order for it to work.
1:25 PM UTC, July 14 2006
-introduce a cross-BOINC unified credit system with WU reference machines hosted external to the individual BOINC project - example: at Berkeley or at a solid working participating team
1:25 PM UTC, July 14 2006
I tried to join climateprediction and rosetta, but they don't support the old register method anymore. And I don't have any boinc-managers running, but configure boinc with ssh and boinc_cmd.
1:36 PM UTC, July 14 2006
I want to limit the CPU usage, so i can use boinc on my laptop and for the workstations around the clock an then every it´s running. It´s better 8 h per 50% as 1 Hour in Sreenserver for 1 h per 100% !
It would be helpful to have a setup for the maximum usage of the CPU Power.
1:37 PM UTC, July 14 2006
A proper website address for boinc, such as www.boinc.com would be much easier to remeber ;-)
Easier to use & feature rich message boards maybe in the style of vbulletin/php/ubb like CPDN's for example.
Nivcer GUI under windows, make it easier to use for beginners BUT also with the advanced stuff available if wanted/needed rather than having to alrer text files.
For projects, get involved with the participants and give feedback (Rosetta@Home seem to do that very well).
More project to boinc collaberation, for example BOINC should have a centralised board integrated into the porject site boards. Currently the BOINC board is pointless an boinc developers never seem to respond to anything there and some development seems to happen at Seti (boinc needs a greater seperation from seti as well).
In other words, 'boinc' talk seems to get repeated over and over againn at each individual project. But since the projects can do little about boinc there's not much point in talking bout it. Unfortunatly this puts a bad image of a project and boinc. But if there was one place where boinc specific talk with developers getting involved easily accesible and integrated seemlessly into each project board etc. it would be better.
2:29 PM UTC, July 14 2006
I'm impressed that you can run this as a windows service as well as it's capability to take advanced setting such as proxy server authentication. I would be nice if one could tweak the % of processor usage that it would take up... i.e. set it so that it never goes above 50% CPU usage.
2:30 PM UTC, July 14 2006
A single composite or varying true screen saver which is unconnected with work unit processing (so as not to degrade it)and presents exemplar graphics.
2:43 PM UTC, July 14 2006
work ( flops + mips ) related credits - NO Benchmark ! , more information about the science ( easy argumentation ) , project related socializing boards without limitations to the project topic. Direct contact to programmers and administrative members.
2:49 PM UTC, July 14 2006
More traductions to other languages. I´am from Spain but I speak perfect English, but I have friends that don´t know English and can´t read and understand anything from the webpages of B.O.I.N.C.. For example, if we don´t speak english, how can we completed this survey?

2:52 PM UTC, July 14 2006
have every project use the fpops counting system for credits to put everyone on a equal footing. eg, einstein, seti enhanced
2:58 PM UTC, July 14 2006
Integrate some log features from BOINCview such as the WU's crunched, the time it took for each and the BOINC credit for each. Substantially improve projected CPU time & clock time to completion. Allow prioritization of WU's...e.g. those that have a waiting quorum, thru a move up / move down function in the work tab, whilst project weights should be maintained over longer periods like a week or whatever the different project deadline lengths are. Graphs/Statistics with different period views not only the sliding month, but also 3 months / year etc. Get the Benchmark not to take place until a firm checkpoint is saved...loosing sometimes 40 minutes....is this in the coming 5.6 already?
3:00 PM UTC, July 14 2006
As people often move to new computers, it would be nice if there was an easy, automated way to move existing work units to a new computer. Also, some projects (I think Einstein) have a way to re-download work units that were not completed. It would be nice if that was supported on all BOINC projects.
3:04 PM UTC, July 14 2006
To be able to install BOINC as a service without the need for passwords or a seperate Admin account.
3:18 PM UTC, July 14 2006
More flexibility in run and network periods (e.g. run suspended between 8am and 6pm during the week but not at the weekend).
3:19 PM UTC, July 14 2006
Add a CPU usage controller because of older computers. I run BOINC as a service on one of my PCs and I might have to kill it because it eats too much CPU.
3:25 PM UTC, July 14 2006
Increase CPU efficiency with optimized applications (SSEx, 64bit). This to do more science in less time and to not waste our resources (power, CPU, time).
A fair credit system based on the number of math operations.
3:27 PM UTC, July 14 2006
correct the 'optimized' client problem, which is a mess; the projects seem to have no way to embrace and distribute optimized clients easily. this should be transparent to the user and by not using the optimized client all sorts of resources and energy is wasted.
3:29 PM UTC, July 14 2006
Use of phpBB forums and more discussion categories. There are only three for Rosetta@home and the message board is unfriendly. Only the science and my team's message board keep me crunching.
3:32 PM UTC, July 14 2006
Give people who own dualcore/multicore systems direct control over their CPUs/cores. If I run two projects on a dualcore and each is set to 50/50, I expect each project to run 24/7 on one single core, not two instances of each after another. Or, let me chose to run one project all the time on one core/CPU and let only the second core/CPU be used for the cycling of other projects.
3:34 PM UTC, July 14 2006
A strict requirement on participating projects to regularly (at least monthly) publish a (short) newsletter describing progress and the way hence forward. (Some projects appear more or less dead, judging from their web sites, As a "cycle contributor" I do not then know if my contribution is valuable or - worst case - a pure waste of electricity.)
3:35 PM UTC, July 14 2006
make project WUs smaller -
1} Dialup users are getting killed with 10-20MB downloads.
2) Smaller packet size is also better for old PCs. 20 hours for 150 credits is too long/big
3:42 PM UTC, July 14 2006
More options for handling multiple projects. For example, the ability to disable the long term debt "feature". Also the ability to specify back-up projects where a WU is only downloaded if other projects are down, but then that WU is finished before other WUs are started.
3:43 PM UTC, July 14 2006
This is for Seti: Everything seems to revolve around credits now.
The staff has somehow become consumed with credits and this is very bad.
The only people that care about credits is the top 1% - 5% of participants. Yet you cater to them like they are the majority. A half a million people running Seti and you bow to a few thousand.
I think the Staff has lost their perspective. The only people that look up to you lately are a few hundred who think you can do no wrong. You need to get a back-bone, figure out a game plan and stick to it. Don't be influence by a few people!
3:43 PM UTC, July 14 2006
The service for BOINC participants is very much differing between several projects.
Intermediate Results should be published earlier,
especially WorldCommunityGrid, climateprediction.net.
3:51 PM UTC, July 14 2006
I think it is a great overall system. I only hope that the majority of the projects are "Non-Profit oriented"...
3:52 PM UTC, July 14 2006
I don't care about credits, but many people do and the current system is easly cheated (as I'm sure you're aware). This is espcially true in projects that don't require wu redundancy (Rosetta for example).
4:00 PM UTC, July 14 2006
Reduce the validation time for returned WUs.
4:04 PM UTC, July 14 2006
Option for BOINC as a hidden service (like folding@home)
4:05 PM UTC, July 14 2006
* Projects need to provide x86_64 clients. The need to run BOINC in a 32-bit emulation environment has been the cause of many issues I've had getting the software to work.
* Projects like CPDN could do with issuing smaller work units. They would be easier to complete on slower, less-used and unstable machines, and may be more attractive to contributors who don't want to make a long-term commitment to a given project.
4:12 PM UTC, July 14 2006
Use a single BOINC user ID for all projects. Preconfigure project URLs for projects out of beta (and allow manual entry for anything not in the list).
4:17 PM UTC, July 14 2006
incorporate BoincView into the BOINC manager.
4:19 PM UTC, July 14 2006
I'd like to:
-Choose the general prefs in BOINC
-See the Wus in a highlighed color (green for running, red for errors, blue for upload/download...)
-To be able to sort the columns in the order that I want (project, status, CPU time for exemple)
-To report results immediatly after uploading them
-To have the same credits in Linux and Windows: Linux is obviously disadvantaged on this subject.
-To select the CPU or thread (for Dual-core & HT machines) for some projects.
-To see a disk in the disk tab ;o)
-The scheduler should finish the Wus that are close to the end (more than 95%) before switching to another Wu/Project.
-Better moderation functions for moderators of the Boinc forums
-Localisation of the Boinc website (at least the home page describing the projects)
-Project news in a news tab (kind of RSS feed directly in the GUI)
-A big red button saying "join a project" to help newbies to join a project (not the current "attach to project" option hidden in a menu)
4:19 PM UTC, July 14 2006
More newer validating servers and less older client software, None older than Boinc 5.2.8.
4:35 PM UTC, July 14 2006
Control the nasty regular posters on the Seti@Home BB.
Make the Project more competitive again. Benefits Seti by encouraging users to commit more resources to the Project and develops greater interest and team spirit and would cut down the number of members registered but non contributing members due to continuing boredom and a lack of interest.
4:37 PM UTC, July 14 2006
CPU recognisation, so that project may send CPU specific app. and get more work done in same time then with a app. that should work on all CPU.
4:38 PM UTC, July 14 2006
1.BOINC does not shutdown some science applications correctly when it switches from 1 project to another.
2. Some loops inside some of the science applications, for example WCG's Rosetta for HPF2, take a long time to do their work and exit even on fast machines. Nothing can be done about that because that is what the algorithm requires. The problem is that while inside that loop the progress indicators do not update. One can never be sure whether the science app has hung or just needs a little more time to kick out of the loop and update the progress indicators. I suggest adding another simple progress indicator that the science app could use to indicate it is still alive and well. A simple whirlygig made from the / - \ | characters would use very little extra CPU time but would let the user know the science app is still running and he should not abort the WU.
I feel a whirlygig would be easy to add to BOINC and would be very useful to many projects and their crunchers. Please do not spoil the idea by making it some grandiose, flashy color bar that crawls across the screen like a caterpillar and consumes CPU ticks needlessly. Just keep it simple and easy.
4:39 PM UTC, July 14 2006
Thanks All!
4:40 PM UTC, July 14 2006
Ability to attach, detach &/or manage remote computers from projects!!!
5:05 PM UTC, July 14 2006
Stability, and less time down and out!
5:10 PM UTC, July 14 2006
Some projects like P@H are not answered and not participated in by the head of the project, these should be addressed by BOINC if that is the case and possibly taken off the site
5:14 PM UTC, July 14 2006
the projects should give as much informations as possible about the science they are doing. Of course they have a lot of othert hings to do but i think a lot of crunchers a very interested in the science, especially people like me who are also scientists
5:18 PM UTC, July 14 2006
Screensaver sometimes is plain black, and (less often) I have problems to close it, takes over a minute since I move the mouse or press key for it to go away. I remember LHC not showing any graphics when in screensaver mode, but no problem in a window.
SETI is the most popular but useless project. They have more users only because they are/were more advertised, and give good credits (why isn't the same amount of credits per CPU time for all projects?). Also, SETI seems to have 400000 users, but less than half of them are active, the rest are abandoned accounts.
A public project where people can test BOINC applications would be very useful for people who want to make a project but start with the code instead of all the administrative n boring part :) (after sourcecode is approved by project owners of course, we don't want to help improve botnets, do we?)
I'm STILL having problems to download BOINC sourcecode to make a project. Why are the nightly tabralls gone? A .tar.gz with the lastest stable version would be very useful, CVS server doesn't work.
5:20 PM UTC, July 14 2006
Personally I have no problems, but I know that others would like more 'Developer' input on the boards; and that the SETI board in particular, needs tighter moderation.
5:22 PM UTC, July 14 2006
Please continue the good work! I really prefer BOINC before the other programs ...
I would be nice though, if clicking on the headline (=top of the table, e.g. the word "project" or "Function") would sort the table alphabetically.
This does not work just now - it is a nice way to gewt some overview of how manu WU in what project there are ...
5:26 PM UTC, July 14 2006
One of the reasons that I use the truxoft client is that the official client does not immediately upload results when a WU is finished. This would be a great thing to add in and I believe many people would appreciate it
5:35 PM UTC, July 14 2006
Make sure every project has a good description on what it is working on and trying to do. Make it clear where the computations are actually being used etc. I won't join a project unless I know pretty well what it is working towards.
5:36 PM UTC, July 14 2006
by traducing in many languages.
english is not comprehensive by anybody (as you can see....)
5:36 PM UTC, July 14 2006
The cheating thing has to be ELIMINATED once and for all. My personal goal is to compare my contribution to others, and cheating makes that comparison difficult.
5:42 PM UTC, July 14 2006
It would probably help if credits for WU's were set using a reference computer. This way whether your using an optimized version or optimized hardware, you would know up front the value of each workunit.
5:44 PM UTC, July 14 2006
Maybe more official platforms, like *BSD
5:51 PM UTC, July 14 2006
I think regular news updates on the front page are extremely important. Stale news conveys the feeling that the admins/devs aren't actively monitoring the project - even though in most circumstances this is a false impression.
5:52 PM UTC, July 14 2006
no suggestions right now, everything works fine
5:54 PM UTC, July 14 2006
Great idea to ask...
- The Creditsystem must be verbessert, i collect ideas to give to You.
- A regelmässige projectleader-conference...
- The cache must be fixed. If User run many projects the ressources and the "project running intervall" are not working correct!!!
6:02 PM UTC, July 14 2006
It would save a lot of argument and development effort if the unachievable aim of awarding cross-project, cross-platform credits was abandoned. Different types of processing get different preformances on different platforms, so it just can't be done.
I really want project teams to exercise more control over the use of unofficial apps. Either they are OK or they are not. Recently on Einstein@home, an unofficial optimised app was circulated. There has been no clarity from the project team on the acceptability of this. It was allowed to happen, then they asked people to use different verison number, then they asked people to stop running them, but they have taken no action to stop people running them. This has left me very uncertain as to the validity of the project. Other projects have shot themselves in the foot in various ways. I admit non-BOINC projects have similar faux-pas.
Perhaps BOINC needs to do more to give projects control of the app code used. Make the app part of each WU, where control of the code is critical?
6:03 PM UTC, July 14 2006
the fairness of the benchmark (why does the Bill's OSses always win????)...
6:03 PM UTC, July 14 2006
More feedback from the BOINC and Project staff.
6:05 PM UTC, July 14 2006
user perryjay is still waiting for his free toaster ;)
6:07 PM UTC, July 14 2006
Better forum moderation, faster assimilation of optimized clients, better cross project credit equivalency
6:21 PM UTC, July 14 2006
have cut back on computers running due to electric costs and have somewhat lost interest in distributed computing, been running since S@H first went online.
6:24 PM UTC, July 14 2006
Much better forum code needed (moderation aids,) so selfish posters cannot sabotage threads.
Please correct the ' bug which affects user profiles and even the output of this list of comments!
6:26 PM UTC, July 14 2006
Provide BOINC clients that are preconfigured to crunch for a specific project.
This will make it easier for newbies to get going.
6:27 PM UTC, July 14 2006
I love Seti@home and now i will participate in climaprediction ... till now i am very pleased! great program!
6:32 PM UTC, July 14 2006
Project admins should regularly participate in the message boards.
6:36 PM UTC, July 14 2006
More controls over processing - limit of processor % usage.
On dual processors - limit projects WUs to a processor each, rather than alternately grabbing both for 2 workunits.
6:38 PM UTC, July 14 2006
More and better communication on progress towards the scientific aims for each project.
"Balanced" moderation of the boards at project sites.
More open source projects (and/or encourage existing) so people can reassure themsleves over safety.
encourage optimisation to save power and or get more science done.
Better classify what projects are about to help people choose - some are not interested in hash codes or UFOs but are in protein analysis yet seti rules for sure.
6:42 PM UTC, July 14 2006
automatic download of optimized application (SSE3, SSE2 etc)
6:56 PM UTC, July 14 2006
Would like to see more scientific information concerning the work done and the results of the work ON THE SETI WEB SITE.
6:57 PM UTC, July 14 2006
Ni!
6:58 PM UTC, July 14 2006
CPU Throttle, Run as Service to include Screensaver as an optional, Error Reporting, E-mail notification of errors as optional. Also, Better control over what project runs when.
7:02 PM UTC, July 14 2006
More up to date Technical news.
An easier way to find answers on Bulletin Boards.
Keep them up to date. Seti Bulletin board has not worked for approx 3 days. Keep getting errors.
7:06 PM UTC, July 14 2006
Allow the "install as a service" option to work even if the user does not have a password (home computer). Cleaner setup for those who like BOINC as a service on any machine.
Add team statistics per project in addition to the user statistics.
Add processor affinity option at the project level. Specific projects could then be restricted to x number CPUs if a user chose to impose such a limit on a particular project.
7:15 PM UTC, July 14 2006
Just a general suggestion, my nationality is British, the place I come from is part of the United Kingdom; United Kingdom is not a nationality.
7:22 PM UTC, July 14 2006
BOINC needs much more complete documentation for technical people, and much more user-friendly documentation for Joe Sixpack. The BOINC application is also not user-friendly enough for the average person. Right now, BOINC is pretty much a nerds-only project. For broader participation, the user-friendliness must be improved (not only in terms of functionality, but looks), along with the BOINC website. The site is not very inviting for your average person. Fix those things and add in a little grass-roots marketing, and you could break the "nerd barrier".
P.S. Please keep working to improve the security of the software.
7:28 PM UTC, July 14 2006
The pie chart for Disk usage stats of the earlier versions was prettier than the current bald numbers, but I like the stats graphs.
Short checkpoints. Seasonal too long, 2-3 hours on my machine. uFluids needs to have some.
Some funding for Pasquale for Orbit.
Simple way to backup each project individually without affecting any other projects.
Allow manual restore from backup before phoning home to get a new WU.
I can't get any version from 5 up to speak to my modem properly, a connection failure is reported before it has a chance to connect, so I have to connect manually or leave my connection open. Some versions will connect on first install but not for 2nd or subsequent requests.
Boinc or similar is probably what the internet was originally intended for. Great job, keep at it.
Ray Murray
7:31 PM UTC, July 14 2006
Fix the scoring system.
7:43 PM UTC, July 14 2006
More feedback on the science being performed, and a personal results page, when applicable.
7:51 PM UTC, July 14 2006
Advertising, none of my friends know what BOINC is.
7:52 PM UTC, July 14 2006
Less projects released in Alpha and Beta stages, focus more on the projects that are up and running, not up and coming....
8:17 PM UTC, July 14 2006
Keep the hard working crunchers informed, tell us when you plan on taking the project down before you do so to change light bulbs and such. Keep us informed so we may plan ahead to maintain our operations and not lose interest because no one speaks to us and informs us of events upcoming, instead of leaving us in the dark wondering where did my project go!
8:21 PM UTC, July 14 2006
Small improvements to the BOINC manager, such as the ability to click on a column heading and sort alphanumercally (especially sort by project, and sort by report deadline); being able to individually view the performance graphs for each project (if running alot of projects, graphs become so small they cannot be read);
8:27 PM UTC, July 14 2006
To allow multiple projects to run with a more independent and granular configuration activity for each one.
8:37 PM UTC, July 14 2006
Additional marketing, via Internet Service Providers, could generate additional users.
8:37 PM UTC, July 14 2006
an equal fair credit system between the projects and more stable project serverfarm (e.g. Berkeley isn't realy stable)
8:40 PM UTC, July 14 2006
more platform support - there are still a lot of CPUs out there not even able to run it
better support for 10+ projects - some projects refuse to gieve out work while others still give me some for the same machine, running 24h/day since over 300days, seems to be a problem with the number of projects
classify the projects so that a user with analog modem exactly knows the download time (not only for the first time but also for the work units) some really do a lot of UL/DL for the WUs
8:45 PM UTC, July 14 2006
I'd like to see email updates from projects more frequently.
8:45 PM UTC, July 14 2006
A improved listing of common problems. Many of us are not as fluent in BOINC-speak as some, therefore, a plain english listing of issues and appropriate fixes would be helpful. I suddenly lost einstein from my task list and I cannot find the resolution. That's OK, over the years, I've had various problems crop up every three months or so and it usually takes me a week or two to find the time to go thru the various message boards and help files and I always figure out an answer - but does it have to be so difficult?
8:45 PM UTC, July 14 2006
Really focus on getting it out to non-geeks. The BBC thing got the idea to a lot of people and more of this together with real user-friendly, low maintenance applications to run it.
8:57 PM UTC, July 14 2006
have some projects that we can use older computers on and still get credit.
9:00 PM UTC, July 14 2006
How about developing a BOINC "Bill of Rights" that states just what the participant and the project responsibilities are? It should deal issues like timely information from the projects to the participants about what is going on, clear policy on credits especially in relation to other projects, and clear policy on optimized clients. Right now there is much confusion about the precise relationship between projects and particpants, and any information flow is generally an afterthought. This makes it appear that the project honchos just tolerate the peon participants as a necessary evil and not a true partner.
I find that the projects do not respect the participants by providing timely and accurate information on what is going on. Their excuse is that they are too busy, but then they should have never put up the project.
The status of optimized clients is very murky. In my experience the projects do not have a clearly defined policy and generally treat optimizers very poorly (e.g. Aksof) IMHO optimizers and those willing to test them are a major underused resource. Again the projects seem to be too busy to make productive use of this resource.
Ciao,

Only recieved 1 newsletter since i started a little less then a year ago, would like to hear of anything new, like possable signal found, or a discovery of some sort to let us know that our work is accomplishing something. thank you. :-)
9:16 PM UTC, July 14 2006
For Boinc to start using the best known processes/software for that particular project. If there is an enhanced version that works better than the standard version of BOINC for a particular project then BOINC should implement the enhanced version of the software client and make it freely available to EVERYONE! Messages boards are also out of control and need to be monitored better! If it was not for SETI, I would never have used BOINC in the first place. There also needs to be MORE projects made available to the public. Only having a handfull to choose from SUCKS! Thank you.
9:18 PM UTC, July 14 2006
informative e-mails may help in retaining participants. These e-mails can be project or science related, or just some science facts which may be of interest. I've been doing seti since oct. 99 and the science keeps my computer going. Lost my password so had to register again. Some drop out because of lost password and refuse to start over. Just a thought.
sincerely, Joe Wisnowski
9:30 PM UTC, July 14 2006
Keep us informed and publish all result found(negative or positive!)
9:31 PM UTC, July 14 2006
Start working on 64-bit versioins of boinc.
9:33 PM UTC, July 14 2006
Good communication from the project team, i.e. Rosetta - good, Predictor - dead.
Nobody expects bug-free, but if you're going to crash, crash nice, don't hang the whole system, or the entire BOINC system - it happens.
FAIR credit system for work done - far too many cheats around.
Ban "optimised clients" unless they are available to all without nerd level knowledge.
9:33 PM UTC, July 14 2006
by making use of new hardware technologies as soon as
possible to explode full capacity of new processors
9:35 PM UTC, July 14 2006
It will be good, to use translated web pages for all BOINC projects, just like it's with SETI@home.
9:40 PM UTC, July 14 2006
Better handling of updates (automatic notification, perhaps) - more reliable/predictable multi-project scheduling - keep transfer/file sizes tight, still on dialup here
9:40 PM UTC, July 14 2006
Add more user control in the boinc manager for how the Work units are processed and storing of cache. Add more optimizations for latest cpu's and fix linux bugs.
9:41 PM UTC, July 14 2006
Make sure that projects provide a screensaver
9:50 PM UTC, July 14 2006
Make a two-tier system... A bulletproof one-size-fits-all and... wait... that's been tried. I don't know. I've never experienced most of the problems that people have been whining about... I've only been running BOINC since Dec. 2003.
9:51 PM UTC, July 14 2006
Police scoring for incorrect CPU performances.
9:57 PM UTC, July 14 2006
none, the current BOINC is perfect how it is
9:59 PM UTC, July 14 2006
I've heard tons of people saying it, and it's my personal opinion as well: we would like VERY MUCH to hear more about the scientific side of the research. Namely, what is currently being worked on, what are the models like and about, and most importantly - what are the latest results and predictions coming from BOINC, how are they helpful for the progress of science and the public, and what are the next steps for their use in life?
Thanks!
10:20 PM UTC, July 14 2006
Choosing the number of Wu's to download.
10:21 PM UTC, July 14 2006
Ensure it's in the project policies that any application that can run for more than 6hrs requires checkpointing.
Have automatic cpu/os detection to allow the "best" optimised application to be selected for use.
10:45 PM UTC, July 14 2006
More support for long-duration work units, i.e., :
* Being able to back up individual work units so that if one crashes it can be restarted without affecting the others that Boinc is currently processing
* Capture of errors such as Exit Code 1 (windows kill, windows shutdown) without killing the workunit
* Separation of graphics from the science thread, so that graphics errors do not kill the work unit
* Edit preferences locally instead of via a web site. This is confusing for beginners.
* Push of project information to the client (i.e., RSS feed, possibly also allowing information filtered by user ID)
* Improved participant communication (such as private messaging on the forums)
10:48 PM UTC, July 14 2006
Grant credit like SETI and Einstein, on computations (I believe) instead of time and benchmarks. This essentially lets the server set the credit instead of the users. Users can end up with widely varying credits and I think it's better for the project to set the credit level.
Optimize the science applications to allow more work to be done more quickly. Unofficial optimizations are around and are a sign that the applications can be improved.
Try to keep the work unit size down so crunch time is relatively short. I only run 4 projects and would like to be able to return at least 1 work unit a day. Large work units prevent that (e.g., Einstein now).
Projects should try to monitor work unit distribution and make sure it's fair. Problems are rampant on LHC which does not constantly have work because some people use a 10 day caches to hog work, preventing others from getting the work, and thus making thins slower and less efficient. I've gotten very little work because of this. The only time I got a significant amount of work was when I hogged it myself. This is a bad situation and should be rectified.
10:53 PM UTC, July 14 2006
Allow user participation to create optimized apps/clients thus greatly improving the speed of data processing.
10:57 PM UTC, July 14 2006
The Mac client could stand to be a little more Mac-y. Also, some pretty basic questions are tough to figure out the answer to. Does BOINC prevent my computer from sleeping? Why does the screensaver not seem to need for the main application to be running?
11:15 PM UTC, July 14 2006
Optimization for x86_64 architecture, support for graphics under linux in all projects
11:16 PM UTC, July 14 2006
Better, more interactive screensavers
...Contact
11:32 PM UTC, July 14 2006
An improved work fetch. Less CPU time used during file transmission. Long and Short term debts available in the UI.
11:32 PM UTC, July 14 2006
An "Update all projects at once" button would be nice.
11:36 PM UTC, July 14 2006
Feedback if find something thet either looks good (and then is a glitch, bad data, etc) or turns out to be good (acknowledgement is good for the ego)... but my primary motivation is contributing to process. Does not matter if fails or succeedes. Figured Seti was a long shot, that needs to be tested in some way.
11:44 PM UTC, July 14 2006
More detailed information on the science involved.
11:46 PM UTC, July 14 2006
reference transleted websites such as boinc.fr on projects homepages, boinc is quite hard to install, and very hard for a non-english speaker.
11:49 PM UTC, July 14 2006
-possibility to disable the tooltip in systray
-possibility to set a cpu-usage-limit with different profiles which can be chosen in the systray-icon, i.e. profile1 100%, profile2 75%, profile3 10%
-the science-apps musst be optimized for each processor, boinc-manager can detect the processor and download the right science-app from the project website
-64bit version of the boinc software, the projects should develop 64bit versions of the science-apps in next time
-more competence to merge computers, if we know that is the same computer
-in s@h the possibility to select the new or the old graphic (from s@h classic) (maybe seperate science-app and graphics-app)
-no project switch, if a wu is very close to the end
11:59 PM UTC, July 14 2006
It would be nice to have a setting that would let you choose a threshold after which the work unit will contiue to completion. You have the choice of 1-10%, if you pick 6%, if the work unit reaches 94% complete it stays active until it is finished. No more work units stopped at 98% complete.
12:04 AM UTC, July 15 2006
Thin Client. (in old days called a TSR), more pretesting less bugs, more information - Seti Classic had a WONDWRFUL web site that I showed to everyone that said "Look what we did" Simple and easy installation on multipul platforms, full support of Optimized clients. Notifications of where the money comes from, where it goes, How much more is needed, etc... most important, and I believe this above all else.... Capture the publics intrest with quick, simple and painless, and once again you will build the worlds fastest supercomupter
12:10 AM UTC, July 15 2006
Not an answer to this question, but a comment on an answer above. During the summer my computer is only on when I'm actively using it but in the winter I leave it on 24/7.
12:11 AM UTC, July 15 2006
I used the CPU optimised programs to number crunch faster. Now with the new version I am slower than ever :-( It would be nice to have official CPU specific versions that will always work at optimum speed.
12:11 AM UTC, July 15 2006
more info on the projects back ends
12:14 AM UTC, July 15 2006
Demand a minimum level of IT support from the projects before they plug in their clients - ie database backups.
12:16 AM UTC, July 15 2006
Better communication of when project servers are down, notification within the client? Simpler explanations of what the projects do for non-scientists. Ni! Ni! Ni! Ni!
12:17 AM UTC, July 15 2006
Help with issues and information is very hard to obtain despite the fact that I can navigate the net fairly easily.
Not having a central support team makes it hard to find and resolve problems. Depending on volunteers is nice but there seems to be no control of the information.
12:20 AM UTC, July 15 2006
I prefer projects with tasks that last less than an hour each.
12:26 AM UTC, July 15 2006
Improve the credit system so it would give the same credit in all projects.
12:26 AM UTC, July 15 2006
Improve the App. update system to include Opt. Apps and base the Credit system on uniform system between all projoects, to prevent project picking to get "BETTER RAC ON ANY SINGLE PROJECT". While I enjoy seeing how I rank up with the other people involved with BOINC, I don't think allowing a project to entice people to join based on "MORE CREDIT/(HR/WORK UNIT/...) should be the deciding factor. Thank You for asking, Let me know if we find ET.
12:37 AM UTC, July 15 2006
more feedback regards the results
12:52 AM UTC, July 15 2006
Stop the benchmarking system
1:05 AM UTC, July 15 2006
Make it more LAN friendly, so I can put it on work computers
1:07 AM UTC, July 15 2006
Get all the documentation properly up to date and streamline how to find stuff. Get a tech person to patrol help boards and anser technical question. Generally better interaction with the user base.
1:10 AM UTC, July 15 2006
Please work on the the Linux side.
1:23 AM UTC, July 15 2006
Keep it running!
1:24 AM UTC, July 15 2006
Better Screensavers
Email Newsletter
1:40 AM UTC, July 15 2006
more variation in the types of projects
1:59 AM UTC, July 15 2006
small work units that complete quickly, with small data sets.
2:09 AM UTC, July 15 2006
It's difficult to tell where the research effort comes from and goes to in some projects, specially the protein-related ones. I think some kind of "openness" rating or something would be great.
Also, I'd love seeing the official GUI ported to a prettier and more portable toolkit like QT.
2:10 AM UTC, July 15 2006
I would like:
BOINC Manager to have the same abilities as BoincView.
BOINC to compress the projects data files.
BOINC to require all projects have a "System requirements" on the front page, so that you don't have to join up, to find out, that it is not possible/practical for you to participate.
BOINC Q&A boards to be totaly redesigned, as trying to jump back and forth answering questions is highly painful.
BOINC boards to have better support for non-English language characters, a preview button, PM capabilities, a place to post a question/reply as a guest.
BOINC to have far better inter-project imformation sharing, and more documentaion for the projects.
BOINC to clean up the credit mess, if possible.
BOINC to specifically pick computers that are within highly adaptable ranges to send specific WU's to.
2:50 AM UTC, July 15 2006
I really wish this sytem was a bit easier to keep running. always trying to improve the graphics swcreensaver. I spend more time trouble shooting this system, then any other program on my computer.also wish I could comunicate directly with someone for troubleshooting problems. I used to run the clasic seti@home, and there was no constant trouble shooting to be done, just pure computing, and not bad screensaver either. Righht now I'm dealing with constant computational errors, and don't have a clue where to start.
2:53 AM UTC, July 15 2006
Doing fine so far! Keep up the good work. Perhaps better documenation and FAQ included with the package to help diagnose the most basic problems/questions. A detailed manual/help system would probably be most beneficial to all.
2:54 AM UTC, July 15 2006
More feedback is always good. More support for different platforms of all projects eg Macintosh. Regular news updates from projects. Easier updating of machine preferences. More notification about scientific goals achieved.
3:04 AM UTC, July 15 2006
More surport for CPID. Such as more thorougher checks so each project you are joined to, does have the same cross-project ID.
3:13 AM UTC, July 15 2006
(Projects) More detailed background information on (or links to) the science involved in the project.
(BOINC Manager) Better local control of e.g. project shares, scheduling (rather than having to go to lots of sites to set it up).
(General) It would be nice if BOINC would say Ni! to anyone who will listen.
3:31 AM UTC, July 15 2006
Ni! I'm quite happy with BOINC and the range of projects.
3:59 AM UTC, July 15 2006
Not allow "tweaked" versions like Askof's to be used so that those "in the know" get an unfair advantage in earning credits for tasks processed compared to those of us that use legal or legitimate clients downloaded when the project is attached to.
4:07 AM UTC, July 15 2006
The RSS feeds are quite good from most sites. However, when issues arise with certain apps, or data sets, sending an email to abort or other recommended action would be useful. I do "micromanage" the computers from time to time, but notification of these types of issues would be helpful.
Ni!
4:43 AM UTC, July 15 2006
sometimes problem with get work - depends from work sorting ( percentage )
4:50 AM UTC, July 15 2006
sharing a multi(core, cpu) machine between projects that have disparate timescales (CPDN vs everything else) doesn't work very well. Manual intervention required.

BOINC manager should be a bit faster and smaller software :)
5:47 AM UTC, July 15 2006
Make sure all projects WU's follow the same rules of
time to completion. there are a few that don't and downloading themn makes the computers go into overcommited?
specialy when the WU's have 00:00:00 deadline
5:53 AM UTC, July 15 2006
It would be nice to control resource share on a per computer basis, rather than just a per project basis. On some computers I would like to allocate a high resource share for a particular project, but have it quite low on another
6:08 AM UTC, July 15 2006
Please of please make Linux benchmark close to windows machines. Im always claiming half the credit of a windows machine. Equal work for equal credits
6:27 AM UTC, July 15 2006
Ni!
6:28 AM UTC, July 15 2006
Improve our abilty to wisely select projects by having a list of projects ordered (sorted by)"relative usefulness".
Where relative usefullness was defined as a measure of the number of work units per CPU minute/hour/second that we could expect our type of machine to produce.
Thus we could choose the best science for our machine type based on how effective our machine type was on a particular project.
You have the data from the result quorums that are maintained.
6:34 AM UTC, July 15 2006
resolve the optimized client issue
6:44 AM UTC, July 15 2006
Show and explain STD/LTD EDF etc while Boinc shell is running.
Many people don't know why WU's are not being done/downloaded etc.
7:07 AM UTC, July 15 2006
More fair credit system ...
7:10 AM UTC, July 15 2006
Give more credit's and work unit's. Other then that it's fine.
7:27 AM UTC, July 15 2006
Make official BOINC (client and manager) offline user manual (RTFM) :)
7:31 AM UTC, July 15 2006
Try to get distributed.Net on Boinc i would love it.
7:34 AM UTC, July 15 2006
Using optimalizations, using SSE/SSE1/SSE2/SSE3 opcode
7:42 AM UTC, July 15 2006
I would like to somehow like to see the BOINC program easier to utilize for beginners and make sure that the users know where to look to have their questions answered. I think a lot of people download the software to run boinc, but then stop if they have a problem..... Also, there has been an increase in the amount of people that seem to try and cheat. I care less about the credits but I do not like to see all the fighting on the message boards.
7:54 AM UTC, July 15 2006

7:56 AM UTC, July 15 2006
Adjust benchmarks so Linux and Windows receive similar points for same work done. Use different way of computing benchmark to minimise cheating. Improve time to completion estimate to make it more accurate for longer projects like Climate Prediction.
Display estimate of time to next trickle on long projects such as Climate Prediction.
8:45 AM UTC, July 15 2006
make sure new faster programs are released often.
and comunicate with the particepants a lot, atleast i like that, because i can see what is going on and that the project leaders are actively working om improving the project
8:50 AM UTC, July 15 2006
One thing that SETI@home had which I thought was neat was that once certain milestones were met you would get an email congratulating you on your accomplishment and you could download an online certificate. Its nothing big but does give users a sense of accomplishment. Right now it doesnt appear that there is anything that gives that other than looking on third party statistics pages for bigger numbers.
9:15 AM UTC, July 15 2006
Please force the project leader, or the community, to write, in the project main page, who he/they are and what is the project for (not every project do both), the achieved results (not only in CPU usage, but in effective results), a "time table" of future developements (if any).
In other words, we are not only a "Number crunchers", we want also "emotionally" participate to the developement of science.
Thanks
9:35 AM UTC, July 15 2006
Fair credit system across all projects. I am very concerned about the use of optimised clients that do nothing but increase benchmarks.
9:39 AM UTC, July 15 2006
Project-applications should be available in processor-optimized and standard versions. BOINC-Manager should be able to let me choose an installation for a particular cpu-optimization. BOINC-Manager will then know which application to download from the projects.
For projects without optimized applications the default value would be the standard application.
9:46 AM UTC, July 15 2006
Less discussions about credits! If someone wants 1000 credits /WU, give it to him. I want to produce results for science.
Please: Different Applications for slow and fast computers. ( Thanks to Crunch3r).
10:15 AM UTC, July 15 2006
Boinc : have a look at BoincStudio : http://forum.boincstudio.boinc.fr
Projects : by optimizing projects to cpu instructions.
Also, no FLAMING or INSULTING optimizers would help A LOT (private message to the Seti@home team)
10:20 AM UTC, July 15 2006
Too many size of new versions to download.
10:36 AM UTC, July 15 2006
For every BOINC project it shoule be mandatory to place an eMail of the responsible person somewhere on the website.
11:40 AM UTC, July 15 2006
NetDIMES(http://netdimes.org/) to operate on BOINC
11:49 AM UTC, July 15 2006
I'd like to have a graphic display of the projects that have accumulated long-term debt, and the estimated "return to normal"
12:08 PM UTC, July 15 2006
make sure that the software recognises the cpu used, so that its full capabilities can be exploited e.g. SSE3, 64KT etc.
12:40 PM UTC, July 15 2006
Do away with credit
12:49 PM UTC, July 15 2006
Would like to see an additional control option for dual/multi core PCs. Something were I could tell the PC tu run one process all the time, but the second only when the PC has been idle.
12:52 PM UTC, July 15 2006
I would like to see a way to specify a project per computer, i.e. I like to run Seti on one machine, but Einstein on another, and the current method of achieving that is cumbersome at best. Worse, if that is done for more than three projects (Home, Work, etc), I find myself creating additional accounts, which seems unnecessary.
12:54 PM UTC, July 15 2006
optimized clients for the different prozessors and plattforms from the PROJECT!
same credits/h in ALL projects for the standard apps
1:10 PM UTC, July 15 2006
Fixed credits for WUs on _all_ projects to avoid cheating
1:13 PM UTC, July 15 2006
A more fair credit system! Best would be static credits per WU-Size (pre-known calculation time).
More friendly procekt leader which give the users more infomations about current activities.
1:24 PM UTC, July 15 2006
The scoring system needs to be the same for all projects, Currently some do not have a quarum and User BOINC versions take advantage of this and increase the score.
1:33 PM UTC, July 15 2006
Standardizing the way credit is calculated across projects in order to stop flame wars on msg boards and to stop boincers migrating from project to project just because of credits.
2:09 PM UTC, July 15 2006
More PowerPC projects, please!
2:12 PM UTC, July 15 2006
Credit granted should be increased to approximate levels achieved prior to the release of SETI Enhanced.
2:16 PM UTC, July 15 2006
Please include cpu_affinity and a real(!) benchmark for linux hosts.
Also s clear determination of cpu capabilities, like 3DNow!, SSE, SSE2, SSE3, SSE4 and a version for 64 Bit OS.
2:33 PM UTC, July 15 2006
* Auto updater
* Improvements of message board (eg: better recognition of staff)
* possibility of auto installer (sometimes friends want to run BOINC and a project, but the configuration etc is hard for beginners. If it is possible to send them an auto installer, which will install BOINC and attach a project will get more users...)
2:34 PM UTC, July 15 2006
BOINC screen saver is buggy on OS X; more projects that support OS X.
2:43 PM UTC, July 15 2006
Release highly optimized clients for multiple platforms.
ie.
Inter - SSE, SSE 2, SSE 3
Amd - SSE, SSE 2, SSE 3
It may be a little more effort for you people but the reduction in processing time, its advantages are numerous.
Much more science can be done, Saving in electricity cost due to faster completion etc.
2:44 PM UTC, July 15 2006
Better Screen Savers
2:48 PM UTC, July 15 2006
uses less ram memory
2:53 PM UTC, July 15 2006
BOINC needs to be more focused on the end-user. It is currently too focused on serving the needs of the projects. E.g. Long Term Debt is a waste of time, if a project is down a project has no incentive to get it back up and running. Downloading WU causes existing work to preempt to meet new earliest deadline first causing excessive usage of RAM. A project does not own my PC and should not cause another project to preempt because it uses a short deadline. No ability to set cache size on per project basis. Boinc manager is buggy, e.g. remote passwords do not work, no sorting in columns etc.
2:59 PM UTC, July 15 2006
improve the ways to manage computer accounts for the users, easily configure, delete, etc.
2:59 PM UTC, July 15 2006
Because Boinc projects bring real advantage to a science and I wish to help them with it
3:00 PM UTC, July 15 2006
easier to use for less advance users
Make deal with dell or hp to make boinc installed on computers with 2 projects of boincs choice
3:06 PM UTC, July 15 2006
there are too manu updates to keep up
3:09 PM UTC, July 15 2006
Instead of having to install a client to regulate the CPU usage., make it apart of the application itself.
3:17 PM UTC, July 15 2006
More and simplifyry of the teams statistic information.
3:25 PM UTC, July 15 2006
More participation and Information for Boinc Seti Staff could get me back. But until then I am done.
3:35 PM UTC, July 15 2006
Test clients and wu's before going live. This was one of the most frustrating things in the time i'm running R@H.
3:52 PM UTC, July 15 2006
This is a fine product and you should be proud of yourselves. That said, improving installation ease would help spread distributed computing among novice users.
4:15 PM UTC, July 15 2006
Support for small LCD-Displays ,like the L.I.S. from VLSystems or selfbuild displays for the parallel port.
4:27 PM UTC, July 15 2006
Seti enhanced sucks! remove the flop counting stuff
4:42 PM UTC, July 15 2006
The BOINC client should be more user friendly, but the layout should be based upon the native system theme and not something else.
4:44 PM UTC, July 15 2006
Need to simplify them running as a service. One may no longer be able to interact with them but pretty graphics does not quite replace your need for computing power...
4:58 PM UTC, July 15 2006
Greater verbosity on occuring errors,
true rewriting of the scheduler;
easier graphics API
5:11 PM UTC, July 15 2006
It doesnt seem like boinc is very secure although I think it is a very good concept and functional program. My problem is mostly with the projects. I.E. seti has bad graphics, climateprediction WUs take to long to complete. things like this keep me from running it.
5:17 PM UTC, July 15 2006
Keep it running, I moved lot of resources to other projects (E@H, malariacontrol and SIMAP) but still leaving some % for S@H.
5:23 PM UTC, July 15 2006
always use the KISS principle.
5:23 PM UTC, July 15 2006
The once-per-second contact between the client Boinc and the server seems like a major waste of bandwidth.
I have tried a few times to get Boinc to work on my computer, but problems start to occur whenever I do. This last time, my computer froze repeatedly when I started the browser (Firefox 1.5.0.4). I also use parental control software (Optenet) that logs all access to net. The log file gets gigantic and is basically useless when Boinc is running. Old standalone Seti@home always worked like a charm. I miss it.
5:35 PM UTC, July 15 2006
i really do like the program as it is. to me the science is what is important.
5:40 PM UTC, July 15 2006
Results are automatically zipped before sending.
You can select which WU to process, even if it means going into EDF.
5:40 PM UTC, July 15 2006
More user control over allocation of resources between projects
Sensitivity between battery and AC line on my laptops.
5:47 PM UTC, July 15 2006
add more local options for customising participation
adjust deadline for those participating in multiple projects
5:47 PM UTC, July 15 2006
Better credit system, I've cut back on my usage because of how the credit system has been adjusted downward.
5:52 PM UTC, July 15 2006
I ran seti-classic for years with no problems other than burning through three computers, two power supplies and one hard disk. I experienced no problems with boinc/seti in the beginnin but with the beefed-up seti client (and changes to boinc other than general upgrades?) my laptop was having overheating problems and shutting itself down. I took it 'off-line' several months ago. Noticed later my desktop was being stressed pretty good and, after replacing a burned out power supply, decided to take it out of the project as well. Another factor was the doubling of our electricity bill, dead of Summer and especially hot and humid. I had a good run with seti@home though; seven years. ;)

SAtop it from interfering with other programs, and allow me to reboot, start other things without exiting bionic first, or causing my computer to hang!!
6:04 PM UTC, July 15 2006
avoir des graphiques plus explicites
6:29 PM UTC, July 15 2006
Build in a possibillity to lower the processor usage instead of fully using all the CPU power
6:30 PM UTC, July 15 2006
PLEASE let tasks be sortable by column. An older version of Boinc allowed this, and it was very useful to determine which tasks had upcoming deadlines, or to arrange them by progress or project.
Also, when selecting a task in the Tasks tab, it would be nice to have an "Update project" button. I like to send in WUs once they finish rather than waiting for Boinc to send them. Having to switch from the Tasks tab to the Projects tab to do this is somewhat inconvenient.
6:43 PM UTC, July 15 2006
SETI is the most developed and user-friendly site; if the other sites could explain their projects better and be more user-friendly, that would increase my participation. Too many sites with projects in the same field; spread the application to the other sciences (I know you can't control that). Some projects are just arcane and don't relate to me on a personal level. You should know I'm a returning SETI user, running it first in the late 1990's on a Pentium 166. Much nicer now with XP and a dual core processor!
6:45 PM UTC, July 15 2006
Kick a few idiots off the message boards.
Shoot the guy who caused the ruckus with Crunch3r.
Admins post a bit more about what is happening (good or bad) technically and scientifically. (Matt, we really missed you while you were away)
6:46 PM UTC, July 15 2006
More feedback to crunchers.
6:50 PM UTC, July 15 2006
make away in the settings of the use more than idle cpu cycles maybe half of 3/4 of all cpu cycles so projects that take longer would go quicker.
6:53 PM UTC, July 15 2006
(1)Better explanation of credit for work done. Why is a friends machine getting a higher average credit when his processor speed is half of mine. Both machines run about the same number of hours. (2)Work assignments seem to be inconsistent in due dates. On several occasions I have had existing work pre-empted to accomplish work with an earlier due date that was received several days after the work already running on my computer.
7:06 PM UTC, July 15 2006
Very important to me is fairer way in granting credits for work done.
7:10 PM UTC, July 15 2006
You are doing well. I wish you luck ...
7:13 PM UTC, July 15 2006
still bugs: when a project is down for a few days, boinc may forget to contact it (upload and dowload) for days or weeks after it is available again...
different projects may give very different credits for the same cpu time: einstein gives 2 times more than seti on Macs.
7:14 PM UTC, July 15 2006
Better contact available for problems/issues
7:19 PM UTC, July 15 2006
BOINC itself is fine, for the most part. Most of the projects need to have more admin participation on the boards, a few do, and the projects need to keep news updated. I have seen news on some sites that is well over 8 months old, some longer, some shorter. Also, I haven't seen any apps done for FreeBSD specific, only Linux. SETI@Home's Linux version will not run on my FreeBSD boxes, as an example.
7:20 PM UTC, July 15 2006
Under Linux, some capabilities (such as toggling "don't download new work") aren't available from the command line; I have to crank up the UI interface to get to the checkbox. Full command line access to features presented by the graphical UI would be appreciated. At least document which file has setting and how to edit it.
7:22 PM UTC, July 15 2006
better support for linux, not all projects have applications for linux
7:26 PM UTC, July 15 2006
easier update of client and boinc software, redundant locations for workunit upload/download, or larger work que's
7:26 PM UTC, July 15 2006
Would be nice to have some kind of mechanism to notify or automatically update boinc client like firefox has. Having no idea when next version of client will be released is a little annoying (common open source problem).
7:28 PM UTC, July 15 2006
stop server problems.. for a while their were always problems getting work units or long periods of outages. Never had these problems to this degree with classic.
7:28 PM UTC, July 15 2006
I started with the malariacontrol.net project today. There are some things that may be minor but did almost block me:
- On windows, with the GUI, it was easy to get started (installation, running the GUI etc.). But when asked to enter the project's URL, I entered http://malariacontrol.net (which I got from the browser) and always got a message about the server being possibly temporarily down. I suspected that I had mistyped the URL, so I also tried a different project (which could be accessed ok) and then tried things like just 'malariacontrol.net' which gave the same message. But the tool had added the http:// by itself, so for me it looked as if the URL was ok and indeed the project's server might be down. Only the stats page from the project claimed it was up and running. After retrying for a while and looking at the server stats page I was almost giving up and only by chance tried 'www.malariacontrol.net' which worked :-) Hm, possibly the tool could search for the 'www' prefix too? Or better, the project page would very clearly instruct what to enter as the URL, if it is so sensitive to exactness.
- On Linux, I could not find out from a quick search if there is a GUI. I installed the command line client from my Linux distribution (Gentoo) and ran it. Then I sent a cmd to attach to the project (taking clues from the command line help). Again I'm stuck with the problem that I'm not able to figure out exactly which information is required. This time it is the account key. I have tried the user name and the email address and several other things that are listed on my user account page at the malariacontrol.net web site, but no success so far (but the same account works on Windows, where I was only asked for the email address and password). So again, here it would be helpful to smooth out that sort of first-user guidance that is needed to get up and running.
I hope this helps to improve the software. Thanks for making this framework available :-)
7:28 PM UTC, July 15 2006
Increase efficientcy or explain what has been done to make BOINC efficent.
7:30 PM UTC, July 15 2006
individualized apps that use the more the full power of the processors to get the biggest bang for teh buck (i.e. SSE SSE2, 3DNow!...)
7:32 PM UTC, July 15 2006
Just support the CHICKEN, and others like him....improving the proceesing time on 1000's of computer even a few % is a quantum leap in processing power.
7:41 PM UTC, July 15 2006
I have had no problems with the more current versions, but I did with some of the previous versions. I run only the SETI project and at this time I am not interested in the others.
7:49 PM UTC, July 15 2006
more detailed screensaver/graphics, more help and tips for people starting a project
7:51 PM UTC, July 15 2006

7:51 PM UTC, July 15 2006
faster updates for credits.
7:53 PM UTC, July 15 2006
Cannot acquire new work for SETI
7:58 PM UTC, July 15 2006
I would like to have an https connection through firewalls. It works fine with UD or folding@home, having this option, but not with BOINC.
7:59 PM UTC, July 15 2006
It has been far to long since any Scientific status reports describing the results of SETI@home have been published. Such reports were common place in the origin "SETI@home" project. Also, all the computer time spent analyzing Arecibo data will not be beneficial unless telescope time is granted in order to carry out followup observations of candidate signals.
8:00 PM UTC, July 15 2006
Create a command-line version, so it's lighter on the CPU, and PLEASE add some control to the CPU usage, i.e. to be possible to use only 50% of the processor power.
8:01 PM UTC, July 15 2006
be abley to run it with oue the them knowing it
8:02 PM UTC, July 15 2006
- projects : more macosx applications
- BOINC : on the web site, an exhaustive lists of BOINC projects with a classification by specialities (maths, physics,...) the way "Team France" does on his website (http://www.boincfrance.org/)
8:08 PM UTC, July 15 2006
The credit system is not fair. The existing FLOP system is the best so far, but it needs to take into account the time used to crunch also. Presently you can get the same credit for a WU that takes 6 hrs to crunch and one that takes 15 hrs. Users need to be forced to update to the newer versions of BOINC, 4.25 requests far too little credit, and if you are paired with two hosts running it the credit will be less than the FLOP count allows for the WU. The BOINC program itself should have more manual controls if the user wishes to use them...I have a dual Zeon server which crunches best if it crunches two WU's from one project, and two from a different one. I crunch 9 projects and would like to be able to have more input into what WU's are crunched when. Optimized apps are great, but once they are tested and excepted by the science community, they should become the "official" app and downloaded to all machines not just to the few who check the project message boards daily.
8:10 PM UTC, July 15 2006
The main problem I see with BOINC is the way the credits (which I see as a way to recruit more people) are granted . I dont like multiple quorum based credits they are unfair
8:15 PM UTC, July 15 2006
Cant think of any
8:21 PM UTC, July 15 2006
Fair, non-cheatable credit system
More config options (for instance, seperate "running hours" for weekend vs workdays)
Small(er) memory footprint
Frequent statistics updates (also for 3rd party stats)
8:23 PM UTC, July 15 2006
Allow systems to "get" more project data (SETI) at one time that way wouldn't have to leave connection "ON" as much. IOW: instead of just having two running and maybe having two awaiting, why not allow a few more to get queued up on a download.
8:24 PM UTC, July 15 2006
Make sure that Boinc projects are open source, same as Boinc.
Great job!
8:24 PM UTC, July 15 2006
boinc,programs are working so good now . . .
8:26 PM UTC, July 15 2006
Please help to get orbit@home and planet quest projects up and running. These would be very beneficial projects. thank you
8:27 PM UTC, July 15 2006
I really am happy as an astronomer to have a part in helping in SETI@home, Einstein@Home, LHC@home, and the
FightAIDS@home research. However I think the other projects
should have a Certificate of Computation in appreciation of participation in those programs as well. It would be nice for other's to be able to have some recognition for their contribution similar to what SETI@home has done.
8:32 PM UTC, July 15 2006
Optimized builds for SSE2/SSE3/64Bit on the official site and make it possible that BOINC can scan and use optimized cores for the projects.
8:35 PM UTC, July 15 2006
try to minimize usage of memory in bonic
8:36 PM UTC, July 15 2006
i have lost my passwords to einstien@home and lhc@home, so i no longer participate in these projects. it should be easier to find passwords.
8:38 PM UTC, July 15 2006
sort columns in BOINC Manager by clicking on the column header like we could in the old version; be able to search message boards for particular problem instead of having to slog through some many messages that don't apply or group messages into more categories to narrow the range of problems covered
8:44 PM UTC, July 15 2006
Have no clue
8:47 PM UTC, July 15 2006
I use BOINC with Set@Home, it would be nice to have a skymap included with the program whichs shows the exact location of the Wu's being processed together with the exact location of the wu's that are processed.
8:47 PM UTC, July 15 2006

8:59 PM UTC, July 15 2006
maybe boinc could receive emails, when new project is up or one project down... i havent received seti workunits for three months, and darn if i can figure it out, so less tecnical language maybe for us working class people :-)
9:07 PM UTC, July 15 2006
Use older computers. At present and to an even greater degree in the future, the faster modern systems set the norm. Those of us with older equipment get left out. For example, I have a 1.1 GHz outfit. I like participating in the project. The new dual processors working at above 3 GHz can run circles around me. But 1.1 GHz is what I have. The new enhanced SETI units take me about a day to complete. I'm not complaining, I can still contribute. As new technology emerges don't make it so people like me who like and want to participate can't because their equipment is not as fast.
9:08 PM UTC, July 15 2006
Load project news directly into BOINC Manager. More control over deciding how to distribute time over projects, eg when project a achieves credit level x, switch to next project. Or give project an increased time share for a designated period of time.
9:08 PM UTC, July 15 2006
* More feedback on the progress/accomplishments of the projects.
* Ability to "auction" credits for processing time. For example, if a project wants more processing time, they can grant project-specific credit to those who provide it. Credit could then be used towards discounts on "fund raising" items.
9:09 PM UTC, July 15 2006
Beging a Graphic artist the whole GUI is sad and dull looking needs, revamping.

Have had some trouble getting my latest computer to "synchronize" with my other computers. The stats for my Einstein work are separate from my other 3 projects when I look at the Boinc statistics. The cross project id does not sync with the others.
9:41 PM UTC, July 15 2006
I FEEL YOU GUYS WORK AS HARD IF NOT HARDER, THA MOST TO RUN A GREAT SITE AND DO THE BEST YOU CAN, TO KEEP ON TOP OF , PROBLEMS, AND THERE WILL ALWAYS, BE SOME.
KEEP UP THE GREAT WORK... IM GLAD TO BE A PART OF THE SETI AT HOME , PROJECT.
DARRELL IN TEXAS,, USA.

1) Enforce a minimum Client level
2) Update Clients-- SPARC Solaris is way-out-of-date
Plus, to get client to work on SPARC, I had to do some
extra linking because the Developer's machine was
non-standard
9:56 PM UTC, July 15 2006
Keep working on communicating with the volunteers, the community, all the folks that donate time, resources, knowledge and money.
10:14 PM UTC, July 15 2006
Communication is the key! ;)
10:15 PM UTC, July 15 2006
Seti at Home clients now often claim the exact same amount of credit for work completed. If two claim the same amount, it shouldn't wait for a third claim to grant credit. The third claim will not change the granted credit.
10:16 PM UTC, July 15 2006
Better versioning and version control. More timely feedback from projects.
10:20 PM UTC, July 15 2006
After I found way on www.worldcommunitygrid.org how to install (upgrade) BOINC client by Group Policy (AD), I am satisfied. I know that you update it too (The Lazy Slug's Guide) - good idea.
What could be better? There is one add-ins called BoincView.Nice but it will be better have some account somewhere on WEB-site and see all these information on this place-client could update these information automatically for example every day.It is enought.
Thanks.
10:24 PM UTC, July 15 2006
Creating BOINC projects so that windows machines don't get more points than other os's...
More frequent updating of projects and programs in order to gain maximum from anyone's pc, otherwise your just wasting time with uneffective coding... (Listen to members posting better progs than projects themselves, instead of shooting them down, listen to what they've done to make your prog better and incorporate it-- THANX AKOS)
update stats more frequently, its frustrating to see points only updated once a day, even if it means all the projects together get 1 server to connect from project to project to update its own stats which can be shown to the public. dont think this is too much too ask. would anyway be less intensive than 100k people connecting to a project directly to get stats and screwing with WU delivery....
10:27 PM UTC, July 15 2006
implement a function to throttle back the power, so the CPU isn't at 100% at the time.
10:28 PM UTC, July 15 2006
Getting more electronic media attention
10:29 PM UTC, July 15 2006
Look around!
60% of the BOINC users are in because of the credits system... Keep this in your minds in whatever improvements you do!
10:29 PM UTC, July 15 2006
Keep people informed often on status and progress of the project. This is very important to me.
10:38 PM UTC, July 15 2006
Don't be complex
10:41 PM UTC, July 15 2006
More Translations to the other nations languages. Not everybody understand the scientific phrases.
10:43 PM UTC, July 15 2006
Please update Technical News on SETI homepage more frequently.
10:48 PM UTC, July 15 2006
The project personnel could be less arrogant and admit problems when they happen not just ignore things.
10:56 PM UTC, July 15 2006
Fix the bug that killed my screen saver when you updated the seti client
11:03 PM UTC, July 15 2006
More (french-translated ;) ) informations about... all of that.
11:04 PM UTC, July 15 2006
Keep up the great and valuable work. Let's find ET or something out there soon!
11:12 PM UTC, July 15 2006
Screensavers for Linux
11:15 PM UTC, July 15 2006
The screensavers should have a way of animating all static objects on the screen, or an easy option for turning them off.
The screensaver for Windows need some work, it doesn't respect other fullscreen applications, and doesn't like to be turned off.
11:19 PM UTC, July 15 2006
Better screen saver.
11:27 PM UTC, July 15 2006
Personally, I think any project running Boinc (not the particular project itself) sucks and thus I refuse to participate in any Boinc based projects. I still prefer projects such as SOB, Prime 95, distributed.net etc., that use their own clients. Boinc clients and its operation are are just garbage, period!
11:30 PM UTC, July 15 2006
No fair and quick granting of credit. Similar computers turn in more request for credit. Too many fast compters online with SETI so credit granted is for fastest computers and is much lower credit than work done by slower computers.
11:30 PM UTC, July 15 2006
Award a set cobblestone value for time spent processing useless, noisy work of say 25% of the average w/u value.
Graeme@boincuk.com
11:36 PM UTC, July 15 2006
Keep the workunits going.
11:39 PM UTC, July 15 2006
Run in order of deadline.
Set original deadline use in some logic.
11:50 PM UTC, July 15 2006
None to offer, really, I'm perfectly happy crunching away on my single computer. Thank you very much for letting me participate in the science. While many people appear to be greatly motivated by accumulated credits, I have only one machine and will never reach any significant milestone or ever appear on your leaderboards -- my motivation is strictly getting to help you guys out. Thanks again.
11:51 PM UTC, July 15 2006
Some indication of the helpfulness, in the global scheme of things of each project.
11:57 PM UTC, July 15 2006
How about a project that shows some results? Seti, Einstein,
LHC are interesting but chances of a contribution to science
are minimal. Any prime number searches?
11:59 PM UTC, July 15 2006
The program is to damn complicated. I make my living with this Dell and I don't like wasting time trying to figure out something I'm doing for altruistic reasons. I've come close to uninstalling it several times. I DID DELETE THE bbc weather change program because of error messages.
11:59 PM UTC, July 15 2006
More e-mails
12:00 AM UTC, July 16 2006
Pretty darn good as is, better than the older versions.
12:01 AM UTC, July 16 2006
Make it cooler, hip and more competitive; sort of like a Myspace, but with a purpose.
12:04 AM UTC, July 16 2006
Having a way to know how the projects are comming along, development/improvement of BONIC client, perhaps shape progress of BONIC and Projects so that It can be easily found and understood(as much as possible). In a way since we are all part of this huge scientific team It's like sharing the data with our commrade in arms. That we feel good about not only the big discoveries but the small ones as well.
Thank you
12:15 AM UTC, July 16 2006
Better linux install docs.
12:21 AM UTC, July 16 2006
Have a single tab for all data from a project or to customize the information available onto a single tab
12:40 AM UTC, July 16 2006
No comments for improvement, but lots of praise and congrats! Great Job Guys!
2CPUS
12:44 AM UTC, July 16 2006
team resaults in the statistics tab so you can get the total of credit that the team has achived and its average credit rate
12:48 AM UTC, July 16 2006
Should be able to download more then one project at a time since I can't always get a new project when I'm on-line and ready for one.
12:59 AM UTC, July 16 2006
Allow screensavers to run when BOINC installed as a service.
Need a way to keep users interested but not give them any chance to change BOINC settings.
1:04 AM UTC, July 16 2006
Setiathome: The download queue could be split into multiple queues so that users with similar turnaround times would download from the same queue. Work units would not stay on the database for weeks, waiting for the last result to be returned. This would reduce the size of the database and improve performance.
1:12 AM UTC, July 16 2006
sorry, I have no idea.
1:13 AM UTC, July 16 2006
Better error message (more user frieldly and easy to understand), more option in the boinc manager to manage the core client (edit password, edit host list, edit the rpc port) and possibility to change global and project options directly from boinc manager (improve of am_set/get_info.php).
1:14 AM UTC, July 16 2006
You could work with the CPU manufacturers (intel, AMD, etc) to get 'oficial' optimized versions of the applications for each project, by CPU type, rather than waiting for volunteers to make the attempt.
1:23 AM UTC, July 16 2006
Better description as to what has been accomplished. Screensaver says little.
1:25 AM UTC, July 16 2006
stop so many cpu benchmarks
1:30 AM UTC, July 16 2006
The screensaver app sometimes slows down. t appears to be purely graphical related during screen rotation. This occurs on my 2.16 GHz MBP with 2 GiB of RAM.
1:33 AM UTC, July 16 2006
I run the SETI@Home project and would like to see a link to a page that lists signals that have been found, or found to have the potential to be, of origin from extraterestial intelligent sources, with the point of origin, date found and perhaps name of the participant who's system ID'd it.
1:34 AM UTC, July 16 2006
Interface with me minimally! Get rid of the manager on the taskbar that doesn't do anything! Stop asking for my personal time - SETI ran with almost NO user requirement.
1:35 AM UTC, July 16 2006
Why run the programm just as a screensaver on Windows? Especially during office work?
Fancy screensaver? Let the CPU do the important things!
1:38 AM UTC, July 16 2006
Because of the virus threat, it would be helpful if I could find instruction set optimized versions of BOINC directly on the UCB website.
1:40 AM UTC, July 16 2006
nothing comes to mind today...
2:03 AM UTC, July 16 2006
I think it would be nice if someway Boink would let you know if any of the signals you found were interesting. I don't even know what a good score is. I remember there was something on old site but can't find it. I am not really interested in competing for credits but I would like to know how good my program is doing. Just a thought/
2:18 AM UTC, July 16 2006
in national choice non are my country, catalonian is a nation
2:20 AM UTC, July 16 2006
1. BOINC should report results immediately and automatically, after results of workunits has been uploaded.
2. BOINC should handle all about the amount of given credits, not the scientific app.
3. Credits given, should be equal in all projects.
4. A button in BOINC Manager to turn on/off network activity fast & easy (without using menu), inclusive an small display (green/red) displaying current state.
5. BOINC should accept the network activity setting. If turned off, it should not send data (also computer has an internet connection).
Sorry, it's bad english ...
2:33 AM UTC, July 16 2006
The only issue I have with Boinc right now is the current version does NOT exit the process from memory as it should. I'm using an older version because of this, since I run various programs on my computers, some of which require large amounts of memory, and I can't have Boinc holding RAM when I need to use it.
Boinc can use all the RAM it wants when I'm not using the computer (idle time set at 10mins), but when I want to use the computer, I want those process cycles and RAM back so I can get my work done.
:-)
2:45 AM UTC, July 16 2006
I just started using BOINC, so I cannot say right now. I was using the original SETI@home client for some time, but was having problems installing the BOINC software on my computer. The issues with my computer were dissolved when I just had to reformat my hard drive and reinstall Windows. From what I can see, it seems to be working well.
2:54 AM UTC, July 16 2006
Faster start-up
2:57 AM UTC, July 16 2006
The boink screensaver reeks.
Classic seti screensaver was much better.
2:58 AM UTC, July 16 2006
Be nice to be able to turn off long term debt for certain projects, like LHC.
3:07 AM UTC, July 16 2006
It would be nice if BOINC and its projects could run on older computers (486 to Pentium MMX) with small amount of RAM. At least I wouldn't have to throw them out just because I have a lot of them.
3:11 AM UTC, July 16 2006
Uh... Sorry, but I'd have to say I found "Seti classic" great...
3:21 AM UTC, July 16 2006
I know enough about IT to not meddle in areas where my level of expertise is inadequate. Good luck from a dedicated cruncher!
3:22 AM UTC, July 16 2006
Less downtime...
3:46 AM UTC, July 16 2006
A more standardized, simpler explanation of each project would be helpful in selecting which to run. Perhaps a rating screen with the survey choices results.
3:58 AM UTC, July 16 2006
DUMP IT AND GO BACK TO THE REAL SETI PROGRAM. GET RID OF THIS REDICULOUS CREDIT PROGRAM. I HAVE NO INTEREST IN SHARRING MY COMPUTER WORK ON SETI WITH ANYONE ELSE. REALLY PISSES ME OFF!!!!!!!!!!
3:59 AM UTC, July 16 2006
I am not trained on computer use, at least not currently, I did work for IBM in the late 1960's, on punch card and mag tape machines. They were all commercial for billing and scheduling. I would like to know what is happening, and if any problems exist. I just don't know if the program is of any benefit to you folks.
4:01 AM UTC, July 16 2006
Better screensaver
4:06 AM UTC, July 16 2006
GET THE BUGS OUT!
4:27 AM UTC, July 16 2006
More information about the science and the specific contributions of BOINC science project participants.
4:29 AM UTC, July 16 2006
let us have more say in the report deadline.
4:33 AM UTC, July 16 2006
Making a seti monitor for Boinc Seti would be really cool so I could keep track of my data crunching and results.
4:37 AM UTC, July 16 2006
improve screensaver
Better access to results
4:48 AM UTC, July 16 2006
I ran it on every computer since 1999. But this summer is too hot and so I stopped. Maybe again in winter. Ran SETI and Einstein. Tried weather and BBC weather and both crashed every time. No help for that.
4:57 AM UTC, July 16 2006
Take workunits in other computers that dont's have an internet conection,
5:07 AM UTC, July 16 2006
Following needs to be improved:
- Centralized Administration and Installation/Customization of Clients. (I use Group Policy to distribute Boinc software and push updates to my workstations, customizing .MST file and using BoincView to control Clients). Process needs to be more straighfroward, especially for beginners.
- Boinc client should automatically detect which kind of CPU it is running on and download optimized clients
- to adjust percentage of CPU usage: for example not more than 70%.
5:19 AM UTC, July 16 2006
In the list of projects i would prefer the possibility to say, run project 1 all the time. If project 1 has no work, then do project 2. Finish WU of project 2, then check if project 1 has work, else do 1 WU of project 2.
I hope you could understand what i mean.
5:25 AM UTC, July 16 2006
advertising to get more participants
5:30 AM UTC, July 16 2006
better interface
5:32 AM UTC, July 16 2006
Improved client and apps - credit equalisation standard across ALL projects.
5:35 AM UTC, July 16 2006
-More communication with project staff on message boards. (all projects should follow Rosetta@home on this)
-Project should post some results that it generated over time so that people would keep interested in long term.
-Projects should support development of optimized clients when its possible because people could then do more valuable work for less kWh spent.
-It would be useful to have the ability to adjust preferences for each computer locally, because web preferences can sometimes cause problems. Because you also change preferences of your other computers so you must always compromise. That gives you inability to fine tune your preferences for each computer needs.
I would like to see it solved as another tab in Boinc Manager.
5:41 AM UTC, July 16 2006
Include more detailed, yet still introductory, descriptions of all listed projects on the BOINC website. Affiliate with the Unofficial BOINC Wiki in order to make it "official"! Encourage all projects to more regularly update volunteers as to the results/usefulness/status of their work. UPGRADE forum software to something decent and create tech support FAQs and known issue lists for all projects.
6:00 AM UTC, July 16 2006
Currently, after a reboot, when I open BOINC from my system tray, the window is very small. It would be nice if it restored to the size it was when it was last closed.
6:13 AM UTC, July 16 2006
occasional emails from the project or BOINC of major events or milestones would be helpful to maintain interest.
6:17 AM UTC, July 16 2006
standardizing deadline lengths for Work units.
6:27 AM UTC, July 16 2006
More direct information towards the users by the staff about what is going on in case of problems.
6:30 AM UTC, July 16 2006
smaller units with less computimh time, imporved, max. optimized clients,
6:33 AM UTC, July 16 2006
find a way to avoid computation errors, especially those that abort after 10 hours of work B-(. find a better method for customized preferences, targeted for each project, and possibly each CPU, and less global (BOINC preferences) control.
6:38 AM UTC, July 16 2006
Be able to adjust Max %CPU usage.
Be able to adjust preferences in BOINC Manager instead of opening a browser.
"Fetch New Work" button to manually request new work when no work from a particular project is running on computer.
6:44 AM UTC, July 16 2006
A bit more detailed technical reporting.
6:44 AM UTC, July 16 2006
I would run BOINC on several more computers (including some very powerful servers) if I could control the amount of system resources used both in the CPU and the RAM. I would also want BOINC to automatically dump any projects' processes if they hang. I don't want to load up these systems to full capacity but would be willing to load BOINC if I was sure it wouldn't under any circumstances crash the system and would only run if the system was under say 75% utilization.
6:45 AM UTC, July 16 2006
More SIMD optimizations in standard client and project workers built-in for all platforms (SSE-SSE3, Altivec, etc.) to reduce need for optimized third-party recompiles.
6:46 AM UTC, July 16 2006
Not to arbitrarily change the level of credits granted for the same amount of work
6:48 AM UTC, July 16 2006
Incorporate CPU throttling in BOINC.
6:58 AM UTC, July 16 2006
Help files available without logging onto the Internet. After the first data package was sent, it did not download another and I cannot find out why.
7:26 AM UTC, July 16 2006
I think things are being handled as well as to be expected. I think you all do a hell of a job, considering the small budget. The time you donate to this project is fantastic, again considering that you all do this in addition to your regular full time and paying jobs. So, thank you for allowing us to participate in very worthwhile scientific projects.
7:37 AM UTC, July 16 2006
Way to start to improve: Look at the Old Seti@home Screensaver/Application
7:37 AM UTC, July 16 2006
Fair and equal credits along ALL projects, and ability to be rewarded in production times and credit by optimization based on platform such as sse,3dnow etc incorporated by project admin in thier apps..not by inflated benchmarks
7:41 AM UTC, July 16 2006
Keep the length of workunits restricted to a few hours on average - not only is one of my computers crunching only 1 hour a week, I also get this happy feeling (is BOINC an addiction, then?) useful work has been done when results get reported, no matter how small the WU was (RCN).
7:56 AM UTC, July 16 2006
Integration with particular programs to view the WU position in the sky (for example, Distant Sun 6); MapViwe is too obsolete... thanks ;)
8:02 AM UTC, July 16 2006
The deeper searching has greatly increased the workunit times on SETI & Einstein (the two I run) and my older cpus are up to 50+ hours per work unit. Perhaps a shorter unit could be developed for older cpus so as to run an equivalent time to the newer ones. (Seems to me that I read something to that effect way back when the ideas about BOINC were first being espoused at SETI@home back in 2003?
8:09 AM UTC, July 16 2006
When uploading results, stop going over 100% size of data sent.
8:13 AM UTC, July 16 2006
"Resource share" with multiple projects should consider the savepoints within a projects-wu and not just switch after eg. 2 hours to the next projects-wu loosing the advance of the just calculated wu, just because the savepoint was not reached. (switching between bbcce or seasonal and shorter project-wus like malaria control or seti etc.)
8:13 AM UTC, July 16 2006
You're doing a great job!
8:24 AM UTC, July 16 2006
The page tasks should be able to be sorted by their categories like Project, Report deadline, application etc.
If you use a dsl connection with high speed and ar running 24-7 system, the page "transfers" is useless, because it´s always empty. Why don´t you store all transfer messages in here and move them from the page "Messages"? By this, you could more effective control what had been transfered, when and what is actual in transfer.
It would be nice to see just an information in the program how powerful the boinc network is, saying in FLOP´s or CPU-Power. Would be great to see what boinc does in competition to all the single high-tech supercomputers.
8:32 AM UTC, July 16 2006
BOINC MANAGER SCREEN, "PROJECTS". WHEN I OPEN THIS TAB I WOULD LIKE TO SEE HIGHLIGHTED THE PROJECT WHICH IS CURRENTLY RUNNING.
8:35 AM UTC, July 16 2006
more "farm oriented" of the boinc client will be great (like BoincView) and some more cpu usage possibilities (some kind of cpu usage schedualing for example: from 9 to 17 30% cpu usage, from 19 to 8 100% etc...) an optimized clients should be available by the project team, and an automatic update of the client would be a great feature.
8:40 AM UTC, July 16 2006
The participants should be kept informed of any problems with the websites and/or the science applications. Updated on a regular basis (Daily if possible). If there is a problem (Any problem), and the participants haven't been informed, they'll feel unimportant and that the project doesn't care about them. It's a very simple concept, keep the volunteers happy and the project flourishes. Ignore the volunteers or don't make them feel like an important part of a project, and they leave.
8:47 AM UTC, July 16 2006
very good software for help scientific researches..
8:49 AM UTC, July 16 2006
I have (2) SETI accounts running on (2) computers.
I want to run (1) SETI account on (2) computers.
How can I get these (2) accounts combined into (1) account ?
How about a simple REPLY.
8:52 AM UTC, July 16 2006
Need to improve long passwords for use, particularly in proxy servers, (mine is 14 char and won't work)
Maybe more direct feedback to people who obtain credit targets, etc...
8:58 AM UTC, July 16 2006
Allow displayed columns to be user selectaby sorted (as originally they used to be) so I can organise the work display to show work units deadlines in order etc.
Allow the number of CPU's to be LEFT unused by bonic to be specified (as well as the number to be used as current) I would much prefer to specify that at least 1 CPU not to be used so my computer is more responcive. (With multiple CPU/hyper threads on different machines I have to taylor each machine to leave 1 CPU free on multiple CPU machines, obvisouly single CPU machines should ignore these limits as if BOINC is installed the CPU should be used.) Perhaps a percentage of CPU resource should be specified instead i.e. use no more than 80% CPU instead of stating limit to x CPUs.
8:58 AM UTC, July 16 2006
a little of graphics
9:00 AM UTC, July 16 2006
More color
9:04 AM UTC, July 16 2006
Boinc should prevent certain application to create additional checkpoints other than the frequency set up by user. Some projects generate hard disk access in every 5 seconds.
Thank you
9:07 AM UTC, July 16 2006
with seti_enhanced, some of my PCs are now to slow to run boinc (and finish WUs in time to get credits), so I had to changge over to distributed.net
9:11 AM UTC, July 16 2006
It should be possible to use Computer A (with boinc) as a server to give Computer b-z.. in the Network work. like in the old time setiqueue and other programs like that..., but that must be in a way that its not possible to manipulate! This would be a great thing and many more people would use Boince and its projects.
Greetings form Germany
Tsunamy (chemistry student)
9:12 AM UTC, July 16 2006
There is a spelling mistake in BOINC. The original line is:
"Scientific progress goes BOINK"
Ref.: http://images.amazon.com/images/P/0836218787.01._SS500_SCLZZZZZZZ_V1124912017_.jpg
Maybe you should rename it:
Berkeley Open Infrastructure Network Kernel;-)
Great job, BOINC-Team!
9:14 AM UTC, July 16 2006
better credit granting system.
9:16 AM UTC, July 16 2006
for things like RSS, read the spec and implement them properly, use web standards, enable caching of content (at least the ability to return a HTTP 304 response), just throughness
an RSS feed for the tech news would be good, or automatically add a [the tech news has been updated] notification in the main news
a [your failed results] page under [your account],
similar to the general results listing, but only showing errors to help the user troubleshoot,
some kind of notification when a host is mis-behaving and returning junk results,
more intelligent CPU scheduling, especially for multiCPU machines,
if time is limited, then make it easy for others to submit improvments
9:20 AM UTC, July 16 2006
Write more about the prodject , more info about everything around the people behind etc , more pictures and updates everday , not once a week or so.
9:28 AM UTC, July 16 2006
BOINC Manager should allow the pausing and suspension of individual projects from individual computers so that jobs can be suspended on one computer while others continue to run.
9:31 AM UTC, July 16 2006
For Seti@home, I would like to read more science newsletters.
9:39 AM UTC, July 16 2006
smaller workunits with ca. 2 hours finishing time will make more pepole responsible to work with or for BOINC projects.
9:44 AM UTC, July 16 2006
I would like to see offline crunching support (importing/exporting of the jobs on different computers without network access)
9:44 AM UTC, July 16 2006
attract more people, the more people, the bigger the challenge for most credits.
and try to keep old users intrested, so that they don't leave.
maby by upating the screen saver from time to time, or once a year a contest to win things?
9:52 AM UTC, July 16 2006
General preferences change integrated in the boinc manager (not throug the website)
9:56 AM UTC, July 16 2006
Linux installation is unstable on debian sarge
10:07 AM UTC, July 16 2006
My nationality is English by the way - not United Kingdom(ish). Seti workunits now generally take far too long to complete - particularly on slower 2400Hz machines.

in general smaller WUs so that they process faster and crunchers don't loose interest in a project.

Get rid of the forums and use the old "Seti Classic" style message boards. The forums are a complete and utter disaster with topics and threads buried in a maze. You need project staff participation and monitoring instead of a few who feel they have been elevated to "GOD" status.
For projects I would highly recommend that they (the staff) provide timely news and updates on what is happening with the project, and show the volunteers that they are appreciated. I think a lot could be learned by the way Seti@home made such a mess out of the way the transformation to Boinc was "MISHANDLED." The vast majority of friends and family that I introduced to seti@home during the first 6 years have quit running any distributed projects because of that.

Help on how to de-install and re-install without losing current workloads. Reason: my installation keeps quitting when the screensaver should run and the boingmgr.exe hangs.

Find another mean to grant credits based on the time the user returns a result from its due date.
Ex.
WU received by the client on 8/1/2006 1:00:00 AM
With due date on 8/8/2006 1:00:00 AM (One week)
Assuming that the user successfuly returned the result on 8/2/2006 4:00:00 PM then the granted credits will be:
Granted credits (Days)= Due date - Return date = 8/8/2006 1:00:00 AM - 8/2/2006 4:00:00 PM = 5.375 days
Or 7740 Minutes
Or 464400 Seconds
The faster the WU get crunched (faster the computer) and returned to the project's server, the more credits the user will get.
As simple as that!

You should go for campaigns to increase the number of participants. Perhaps send information to universities to be passed to students. At least I haven't run into any such things in Finland. Most users come nowadays from North America or Europe, but there would be much potential also in Far East (there are over 220 000 Boinc users from the US, from China just about 8000). Think about it and refine the idea into better one. Keep up the good work!

Write instructions for lower common denominator. Assume basic level.
11:14 AM UTC, July 16 2006
make the client disappear on start-up

have identical country lists (states, islands, whatnot) in all projects, so that there are NOT identical countries with different spelling in all the stat-sites

Cache for data in projects, so far i didn't find anythings to do that, ... but i will keep search or post a request for a new feature.
Thanks, for the goog work

Get the popular and fun flavour back!
I really long for the original SETI@hohe startrek-like graphics.
Difficult to express - SETI@home was also fun in a way. This flavour got lost and nowadays it is only something, which works somewhe
