101) Message boards : Server programs : New forum feature may be used for spamming (Message 10678)

Hello mo.v

it's not a special, non-connected forum I'm talking about, where I have to register and know about pm beforehand, it's about unvoluntarily und atm unchangable, signing up to such unwanted posts simply by deciding to crunch for the project. You don't even have to post a single word on the forum to be bothered by pms.

The alternative CPDN forum (and the one for Folding as well) are something completely different and uncomparable to the ordinary BOINC forum.

A mail is only not spam if I allowed it to be send. In the special sign-up fora, like the alternative CPDN, or BS team forum, or my own team forum, I know that I could be bothered from the beginning, nobody expects such low security and breach of privacy when signing up to a scientific project to help with crunching power.

It's a fine feature for the fora junkies to have another way of communication, but they could easy opt in, I probably would do so myself. So why not make it work that way?

I just (15 minutes ago) checked in a feature to disable PM notification emails separately from generic project email. I think it will do for now; PMs are rather useful feature.

It has to be set to "NO" as a default, you have to opt in explicit for such features, otherwise it's plain spam still.

Edit:
This is something far more intrusive than the "normal" newsletter by project, anyone can send you something, and it's up for the project/Boinc to ensure it to be safe.

I disagree, there is no distinction between polite spam and other spam, spam is spam, period.

Nobody opted in to accept pms and the resulting emails notifications, so all this is unsolicited bothering, no matter what content.

The red cross can spam as well, and it will be bad as well.

I just opened a ticket for this in the BOINC trac.

The new introduced forum feature of private messaging is imho implemented contrary to privacy rights. It already has lead to spamming.

I think, next to nobody opted in to accept pms and emails from strangers, the feature was added some few weeks ago to the forum software, and so of course the default setting for pms should have been "deactivate" until activly activated in a consenting manner by the participiants. I don't even see a possibility to opt out of this "feature", that's a big nono imho. This has to be changes asap!

See this thread @BoincSynergy for the consequences.

I hope it's OK for me to put a link to your post in cpdn's News thread?

Of course it's OK.

BTW: All this users have at least a tiny bit of granted credit, otherwise they would not be in the stats. Willy said minimum is 0.00001 or such.

Everything's fine again, see this thread in their fora:

http://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/forums/wcg/viewthread?thread=13061

It appears that the database server crash on Friday caused some problems with the table and index statistics. This lead to a significant degradation in performance of the system. We have rebuilt those statistics on those problematic tables and this appears to have resolved the issue but we will continue to watch it slowly.

This problem only impacts the website. Both the UD grid and the BOINC grid continue to operate correctly.

I've already mailed to that address, I've got an email because I crunched my last WU some month ago and they reminded me of their presence ;)

As it's sunday, probably some time in the night still, I expect no reaction too soon, but I think they are aware by now (if they are awake, that is ;).

I don't know where to put this exactly, but I think this forum is one with best contacts to the admins in the projects. Here's my (and several others as well) problem:

The forum @WCG is no longer reachable for him (and me). I can see and read, but if I try to look at any password protected page or try to post I get this message:
Message

You are not authorized to view this page.

or
Message

You are not authorized to view this section of the website.

But in the top right corner still stands this:
Welcome back, Saenger {sign out}
Accumulated Points: 11,492
Current Ranking: 167,336

This two things don't go together imho, something has to be broken over there.
Has anyone else had the same experience?
If someone still is able to pst there, would you please post a link to here in the forum?

Hello Berkeley,

BOINC has reached a fine milestone today, the 1,000,000th user has arrived and decided to test BOINC.

Link to BOINCstats

Unfortunately only about a quart of all users are active users, but nevertheless a fine milestone to be made public!

Congratz to all developers!

Did you send this to David Anderson as well? I know you hate emailing people... but he never looks here, you know? ;)

No I havn't. davea at berkeley or what's his address again?

I've already sent him an email. Let's see if something happens. :)

Oh and thank you for the warning.

I did as well ;) (I hope it's not considered as spam now ;)
And thanks for the thanks, don't mention it, I became aware of it in the team forum of boinc.be and just thought you oughta know.

Hello,

do you already know that this forum is using the logo and name of BOINC, and says in it's description:
What is Boinc??
Here you can read what boinc means
Boinc is a forum where you can download stuff.
From ED2K links, bittorrents and normal downloads over internet explorer!!
We have in those catagories, Games, Music, Movies and programs (and much more!!)
There is always pleasure in the Boinc cafe!! (only its in dutch!! Shock but we working on it if there are enough other countrys here!!)
I hope you know now to much from Boinc!! Have fun!! Very Happy

It's not that much frequented, and I don't know whether an official reprimand of the improper use of the BOINC trademark it worth it in this case, but I think you should at least know.

Funny though that everyone complaining a lot about Predictor still has that project in their signatures... So they won't crunch and want everyone to block the project from view, yet allow their signatures to show it anyway.

THX for mentioning it, I forgot to delete it from my dcstats-sig. Will do that asap.

This post (a starter for a new thread) lasted about 10 seconds:

Is discussion in any way possible, or will every dissenting post deleted?

I'm still totally lost about the censorship that happened here in the last hours. I can't see a single reason for this.

In the later posts, after next to everything was being deleted that didn't reflect entirely the projects point of view, I agree some people (including me) got a bit frustrated and used some harsher words (but imho not remotely as harsh as the actions by the team).

I'd really like to know why you so desperately want to stifle every discussion of the topic "criminal hacker" here on this board. It's far beyond my comprehension to think about a single reason for it (that isn't malicious, and you still have the benefit of the doubt).

My IP has been blocked because of it. They did block whole ranges of IP adresses for another cruncher. That's imho a bit over the top, or, to be more precisely, plain crap.

As the admins/mods @Predictor censor every single post and thread that tries to discuss this issue, and they don't act against this criminal, I have to draw the conclusion that they condone hacking and Hijacking of computers.

At least 4 threads have been deleted by now, no explanation given to anyone, I stop this project because of cooperation with a criminal subject.

Anyone else find David Braun at Predictor@Home's response to this matter puzzling? I have to say I did.

We reopened the discussion. It cannot be that the oldest BOINC project supports abusing!

I just recieved this:
Predictor@Home notification:

This email is sent to inform you that one of your threads in the forum has been affected by moderation in Predictor@Home:
Thread: Discussion of trojan BOINC-installer reopened
Link: /forum_thread.php?id=2521

The moderator gave this explanation to why your thread was moderated:
None Given

For further information and assistance with Predictor@Home go to

After I wanted to post something more, I got this in the browser:
You may not post or rate messages until Apr 6, 2007

And there is another one already started. And "hidden for administrative purposes" as well, he's fast in his censorship ;)

Thanks GHz for his efforts.

Thanks the unknown (and unvoluntary) cruncher for his/her cooperation.

Thanks to the guys'n'galy at the projects to deal with this ***** quite fast (the remaining ones will follow soon I hope).

If you can't attach, it's because get_project_config.php is also broken (not disabled). I can't tell about the scheduler though. I should be able to attach without get_project_config using BAM...

I tried the attach via BAM!, and failed. But now the scheduler is on again and I succeded. I got my first dTASSER and hope it will not fail through crunching ;)
