So you want me to remove those two "apparently unrelated" files and try ?

That is the only thing I know of that is unique to your situation, so I think it is worth a try. It will tell us if there is a problem in that area of the code.

Well, it was worth the try, though not solving the issue but after stopping the service and removing the 2 app_config files (for which the projects are not currently running) this happened :

Lun 26 jan 21:31:10 2015 | | don't use GPU while active

--> like before !

Lun 26 jan 21:31:29 2015 | | Suspending GPU computation - computer is in use

--> YES it's suspending again !!!

Lun 26 jan 21:31:29 2015 | | Resuming GPU computation

--> OH NO it's resuming again, and I was using the Mac all the time, WTF !!!

My large Collatz WU is now running :(

... so ... isn't there any log message flag that I could enable for you in order to provide more information ?

When you removed the app_configs.xml filed, did it suspend CPU tasks while you were using the mouse and keyboard?

Sorry I only tried the GPU setup again, not the CPU, I'll try this tonight (I haven't copied the app_config files again, anyway) and I'll let you know.

Well, no.

Mer 28 jan 08:03:31 2015 | | Suspending network activity - computer is in use
Mer 28 jan 08:03:31 2015 | | Resuming network activity
Mer 28 jan 08:04:02 2015 | | Benchmark results:
Mer 28 jan 08:04:02 2015 | | Number of CPUs: 8
Mer 28 jan 08:04:02 2015 | | 3370 floating point MIPS (Whetstone) per CPU
Mer 28 jan 08:04:02 2015 | | 8091 integer MIPS (Dhrystone) per CPU

I have 1 collatz and 8 CSG running at the same time I'm using the Mac.

I don't even have the "suspending" and "resuming" log messages due to user activity on the machine like in my post above (though I had noticed since the beginning of this issue that I was not seeing them anymore, see from my first post above).

"suspending" and "resuming" will be shown when the <cpu_sched> debug flag in cc_config.xml is enabled. Use the Advanced->Event Log Diagnostic Flags (or CTRL+SHIFT+F) window to activate.

I did activate that flag, then check both options (CPU and GPU) in the preferences, then uncheck them both.

This is all that I saw in the log from that moment :

I would have expected the "Suspending GPU computation - computer is in use" log message to appear at some point (at the end), since I'm using the computer...

This log snippet doesn't show anything is running either, so for all we know the message was already given. Best to completely exit BOINC, wait a minute, then restart it. Then leave running for 10 minutes, while you do what you normally do on the computer, and then look at the log, and if need be post it completely.

Here you go, I let unckecked both CPU and GPU option, all 3 menu items say "follow preferences", CSG has servers problems so I opened vLHC work fetch and I got 2 WUs, I let them work for a while, then I completely stopped boinc services (launchctl unload), all went out of memory, then I loaded it again (launhctl load) and here is the log :

I've been using the computer all the time, you can't even see any "resuming CPU" or "resuming GPU" in the log but all active WUs are currently running, boinc is not obeying the suspend setup...

I don't really understand also why I have a "suspend network" the "resume network", I don't see such options in the preferences.

Hi Jerome,

Just to confirm: were all the app_configs.xml files removed when you ran this log?

Cheers,

Absolutely, since I have put here the full log, and if it wasn't the case you'd see the 2 rows

08-Jan-2015 23:25:20 [ATLAS@home] Found app_config.xml
08-Jan-2015 23:25:20 [VirtualLHC@home] Found app_config.xml

that I used to have before.

Actually vLHC was one of the projects I tried again when asked to try with CPU suspend (see above), and it turned out that I got 2 WU, and because I didn't have the app_config they both started to run, and "of course" one was wasted after 30mn (unmanageable state, this is another issue I have LOOOONG discussed in other forums, and never found any proper solution, ie vLHC and RNA and Atlas), so it is the proof if need be.

Reminder : I run an iMac under Yosemite (latest) with latest stable boinc 7.4.26, it runs as a service.

Gee, after the end of the charity event I opened all the projects again, forgetting about Primegrid that I had suspended, I got plenty of them... boo the computer is slooooow... so I have to think about suspending GPU when I use the machine, and not forget to let it run before I leave it... or suspend primegrid again...

I did downgrade boinc to 7.4.26, 7.3.19, 7.2.42, and also ran it NOT as a service (since this is not the "regular" to run boinc in Mac OS X, there is not even an installation option like windows version, you have to perform some script) and both "do not run while active" options (CPU and GPU) are NOT followed by boinc. This was obviously working when I was using these older versions.

The only difference is that installed Yosemite : there is an incompatibility of boinc activity detection under Yosemite, whatever (recent enough) version of boinc is used, whatever the run mode (service, or not).

This has nothing to do with any project app, nor the presence of any app_config file.

Please can you have a look at this ?

Thanks

Hi Jerome,

I did test with BOINC 7.4.36 running as a service (I ran the script) under Yosemite, and it detected user activity correctly on my Early 2008 Mac Pro. BOINC also detected user activity correctly under Yosemite when not running as a service on my Mac Pro.

By the way, unless you remove the file /Library/LaunchDaemons/edu.berkeley.boinc.plist, the newly installed version of BOINC will still be run as a service / daemon.

I first remove the service using "launchctl unload ..." command before installing any version of boinc, at the end of the install the installer launches boinc automatically, ie not as a service (that's the moment when I tested it "not as a service"), then I have to stop it and I use "launchctl load ..." again to establish the service again. So for me with or without service, it's not working anymore.

So you are telling me this is somehow a "strange issue only happening on my Mac", and it started at some point after I installed Yosemite, I know it was first working after the upgrade and then I did uncheck the bloody option to do a test (as explained at the beginning of this thread), and from that moment on it never worked again...

So I'll have to definitively stop primegrid then (mainly because the rest of my family doesn't have control over boinc with their account on the Mac - I don't want to - and can't stop/start GPU when they need to use the machine), until the future day I change my computer...

That's only the second "strange boinc issue only happening to my Mac", together with the "won't resist more than one VM projet at the same time" (eg vLHC / Atlas / RNA, whatever mix of these I try) or they will always finish in an "unmanageable state" that will never recover by itself and I have to cancel all those WUs...

Sigh... :/

Hi Jerome,

I think I may have found your problem (at least I hope so.) Looking at the image of your Advanced Preferences dialog you posted here I noticed that you have set Only after computer has been idle for 0.00 minutes. Of course, the computer has always been idle for at least 0 minutes! Change that to 3.00 or whatever you wish.

Bloody bloody hell !!! YOU ARE RIGHT !!! It works, as designed !

How on earth did this happen ? I cannot remember having changed this setup for ages, for me "0" meant "don't consider the option", and I only had the "don't compute GPU when used" unchecked without any mention of a delay of "unused", but now what you say perfectly makes sense ! I really don't understand how this situation happened, or maybe I had a value there and when I did my test one month ago by checking the option I also changed this value, without really thinking about it ?

I can't remember, but anyway, YOU MADE MY DAY !

Now Primegrid is back in business !

Thank you so much Charlie.

Have a great day :)
