I have recently upgraded my PC, replacing the MB by Asus M5A97 R2.0 with AMD FX-8320 8-core CPU. Since then, BOINC have stopped to suspend if the CPU usage is too high. This is a bit of a problem since I have set my CPU fan to run at 1200 RPM and this causes the CPU to heat up to 65 centigrade when load is too high.

Example. The BOINC tasks are running on all 8 cores. I start Deus EX: HR, which is a real CPU hog. For some reason, it only uses 4 cores, but loads are up to 50%. Which means 25% average. BOINC continues to run, the CPU heats up. OK, I set BOINC to suspend if the CPU usage exceeds 20%. The same thing. 10%, 1% - the same thing. I never ever get the "CPU usage too high" message in the logs.

That was with some 6.x version, now I upgraded to 7.2.47. Nothing changed at all.

The global_prefs_override does contain the correct CPU usage limit I set via computing preferences. Other than this particular problem, everything works pretty fine.

I'm on Windows 7 Professional x64, if that is of any help. On my old Asus P5W with 2-core Intel E4600 everything was fine.

It's not a big deal to just suspend manually if I'm about to play a game, but it's possible to forget and overall it's an annoyance. I'm so used to BOINC just doing its job so I hardly ever notice it.

Make sure that BOINC Manager->Advanced view->Activity is set to "Run based on preferences", and not "Run always". Or you get exactly the problem you're seeing.

Oh my, I feel really stupid now. Especially considering the fact that I usually check every possible option just to know them. Thank you!

Don't feel stupid... you wouldn't want to know the amount of times I've been in that situation and was already writing up a report to the alpha email list. Only to find it was my own oversight. :-)
