Running on Ubuntu 12.04 x64 PC BOINC Manager 7.0.65 (x64) widgets 2.8.12, and something must have updated badly, for one day no projects or tasks, where just before there were many. Where do I start?

You mean that BOINC Manager is just empty? In that case start by checking that the BOINC client is actually running.

But with an unrelated reboot, the projects are back. Maybe a gift from the update manager? Like the Church Lady used to say "Never mind!"
