I've had a strange memory issue for quite sometime with Boinc. I'm currently on the latest release running Win 7 on an i7 processor and 9 Gig ram. It runs fine but I find when I start using my PC, over 90% of my RAM is being used and doesn't free up. In the preferences, I've set memory usage to use at most 1% when computer is in use, however this setting doesn't seem to have any effect. What am I missing here? |

Which project(s) do you run? How much work do you have for the project(s)? Where do you see that you use so much RAM? (Side question, but how do you get 9GB of RAM?) Is your BOINC set to run based on preferences? (If not, any preference such as memory usage is ignored). |

I'm running rosetta@home. How do you tell how much work? I'll try to insert a screen shot. Windows task manager and also a memory screen gadget both agree on memory usage. I have 9Gig in my PC Going to Activity, I have it running based on preferences. Tried up upload pic but guess I don't know how :( |

How do you tell how much work? I'll try to insert a screen shot. Don't do so difficult. Either Rosetta@Home will tell you on the tasks page in Your Account, or perhaps it's easier to count them in BOINC Manager_>Advanced view->Tasks tab. Windows task manager and also a memory screen gadget both agree on memory usage. And how are you sure that BOINC uses that much memory? Which process uses that much memory? |

Total credit 1,025,182 Recent average credit 551.90 I'm sure. One way I can release a good part of the memory is to manually go to run always then click back to run based on user preferences. It will drop the memory from around 90% to around 70% |

Total credit 1,025,182 Nice values, but it's not what I asked for. But OK, in Windows Task Manager, go to the Processes tab, if need be resize it so you don't have to scroll too far, make sure you have memory sizes showing (View->Select Columns->check Memory - Working Set and Memory - Commit Size). Click ONCE on the Working Set (Memory) column header. Now check the Image Name column and tell me what uses the most memory. It should be one of the processes at the top, perhaps more than one. Just write down their names on a piece of paper, and type that over here. |

OK, but keep in mind that I manually released the memory a bit ago by the process I outlined in my previous post. Chrome 496,620K minirosetta 376,808K minirosetta 363,416K minirosetta 347,588K minirosetta 339,064K chrome 225,188K chrome 205,756K chrome 176,520K minirosetta 140,900 chrome 118,248K |

Well, let it run then for 12+ hours and redo the listing. You can leave out mentioning Chrome. Although having 5 tabs open and using 1.2GB RAM isn't something I'd think is a good browser. My Pale Moon with 5 tabs open uses ~516,000KB. Anyway, at the next log, mention all the minirosetta processes. Also tell what boinc.exe, boinctray.exe and boincmgr.exe are using. |

I've got 27 tabs of Chrome open. With 9Gigs of ram it's not a problem. There were more processes with those but they were getting much smaller in memory size |

Currently I'm using 8463MB Ram or 92% chrome 516,624k minirosetta 501,276k minirosetta 443,504k minirosetta 438,028k minirosetta 434,304k minirosetta 430,768k minirosetta 428,580k minirosetta 375,288k minirosetta 288,984k chrome 221,972k chrome 190,088k chrome 169,940k Now, I'll manually set to always run then switch it back to run based on preferences. Now, currently using 5183MB Ram or 56% minirosetta doesn't even show as using any ram but only boincmgr, boinc and boinctray using a total of about 9,000K |

No, nothing more shows up. There are several svchost that when all added up comes to about 165,000k. I really think the issue is with the actual files that run within Boinc as I noticed when I tell it to run all the time then turn it back off it usually will release them at that time. It's when it is running while the computer is otherwise idle with the screen saver, then I start using the PC it just continues to hang onto those open files till I play with it again to get it to release. |

That appears to be what is happening with mine. I'd say it must be an issue with rosetta and the nvidia drivers. Sounds so much like what I'm seeing. That being said, I'd say my only option would be to try running a different project. |

It's weird because it doesn't hang up like that every time, maybe 60 or 70% of the time. |

OK, I'm pretty good at keeping up with the latest drivers. Thanks for all your help! |
