	BOINC 5.4.9 is now the new recommended version. Go get it while it's still hot. :) http://boinc.berkeley.edu/download.php Do read the version details. And a message if you are using a proxy: This version has problems with NTLM authentication. 	BOINC 5.4.9 is now the new recommended version. Many thanks to everyone involved: I downloaded the file and installed over the existing software. No pain, no strain and (apparently) no loss of data. The whole setup continued where it left off. I particularly like the totally revamped statistics page. ____________

	Some of the Changes in 5.4.9: A different port number, only port 31416 is used. This to prevent hijacking the port number by the OS or other applications and BOINC Manager saying it can't contact the client. The traffic you see on your firewall is because the Boinc Manager's Task tab is now updated every second. So each second, Boinc.exe and Boincmgr.exe communicate with eachother. (Note: Leaving Boinc Manager open on the Tasks tab, when you have over 0.5 days worth of queue can take up some CPU cycles due to the refresh.) The screensaver will now also give an RPC out, so your firewall software knows it is starting. This to prevent a hanging screensaver when you try to return to the desktop. In case of a client_state.xml file corruption, due to you needing to reboot or a crashing OS, upon the next start of BOINC, the client_state.xml file is checked. If found corrupt, it's discarded and the contents of client_state_prev.xml is used to startup with. New statistics. New names for several menu items. New and clearer error messaging. Some errors are now just warnings. You can use the Account Manager. At this moment only BAM is semi-live: http://bam.boincstats.com (registration is closed again) Network tracing built into the client. (see version details) JM7 fixed several bugs in the work scheduler. 	I tried to update on the 5.2.13 but recieved error message at end of update "Internal Error 2753" an then didn't update - everything else ok no data lost so still on 5.2.13 version ____________

	"Internal Error 2753" means that the Windows Installer has become corrupt and needs to be reinstalled. You best go the easy way and download&install it again. Berkeley expect to have this fixed in the next couple of days, though. windows installer wont install new boinc over old boinc, hmm says cant find msi file, i searched and founf (old?) msi fike in windows downloaded installations directory but that did not help, hmm am at a loss, wil lstick to old boinc till i figure it outm will prob resort to unistall and reinstall,, hmm any ideas?? btw does a router count as a proxy ?? cheers ____________

	I see others are having problems with exactly the reason why I came here in the first place. I'm running 5.2.13 and there is no information anywhere about how to upgrade. Is the recommended procedure to uninstall then install? Do we lose config data or work in process? Install on top of existing release after clean termination? What happens to current config data and work items? I've set my manager to not get any more work, just in case there is loss during transition. Then based on what we find here I'll take the recommended action. On the download page, in addition to links to the downloads themselves, please always provide a few words about how we should go about upgrading. Looking forward to good things. Thanks!

Do we lose config data or work in process? the whole 2 people that i know about from the forums wcg seemed to go ok, for some reason my upgrade messed up, 1st thing their expereince - one exit boinc but NOT uninstall, just install over the top.. i hds oem probs on one puter more on that later but once i worked it out it was just 2 minutes to do it all including d/l , ok got fast connection :) but LEAVE old prog on puter, do not unistall, but DO exit any running progs then just run windows installer ( from disk) and it should go real smooth.. i did have probs on one puter for some unknow reason,,, it would not let me install and even worse qwould not let me unistall, however i managed to reinstall the old boinc using a "repair: option then install the new boinc over the top... i suspect something corrupt but the others did not have this experience... as for my linux box, well i will wait and see, the new boinc seems to be slightly better and has some nice little extra features.. i am not convinced it is worth the fiddle that i had on one puter but was smooth as silk on my 2nd xp machine... cheers yes u figured right, i did come here to this fourm cos i got stuck and wcg did not have advice to help , hmm neither did this one btw, i just dstruggl;ed till i figured out a way.. should not be a problem, all the best cheers am suspecting a corrupt windows installer floating aournd out there somewhere... i re d/l boinc again and had same probwith a 2nd d/l , hmm something corrupted but then the 2nd d/l win install worked ok,, hmmm interesting ____________

	Most people (99.99%) have no problems. I've been doing installs of all the test versions as they come out without a hitch. All that is normally needed is download new version, exit Boinc and install new version. It's as simple as that. Boinc continues from where it left off. Version 4.19 and older (why people don't update regularly I'll never understand) require that you exit Boinc. Uninstall Boinc. The Boinc data is not touched. Install new version. 	I stopped new work just to ensure there is less going on, just in case. Then exited 5.2.13, then just installed 5.4.9 on top of it. Not a single problem. Restarted all projects and everything seems to be going well. Thanks for the reassurance. I still hope to see something like this in the release notes of upcoming releases: "There is no need to uninstall your current version of BOINC. Simply exit execution of the current version, make sure it's not running, then install the new release Over the current release. System restart should not be required, BOINC can be restarted immediately. (Restart only if prompted)" Thanks!

It shouldn't lose you any work as it will stop the service prior to installing the new one over it. But otherwise go Start->Run, type services.msc and hir enter. 	There seems to be a bad WindowsXP boinc.msi file. I downloaded the 5.4.9 installation package and about 80% through the validation of the install package step it fails, reporting that it cannot find a valid boinc.msi. Even when I browse to the directory with the file (which it sees) it will not accept it as valid. Any ideas? Thanks, Stan ____________

	Small problem discovered regarding the new "i686-apple-darwin" platform...it's not yet supported by the servers, so my Intel is receiving no new work. Is there a way to force it to default back to the old PPC platform if the "i686-apple-darwin" is not found?

	The new BOINC manager is looking better and better. BUT right clicking the manager should have a suspend option to temporarily suspend network activity, and not just snooze which stops computation and network. ____________
