I'm done with applications that write to the registry and have to be reinstalled on every new computer purchase.
All my apps are going to a Passport in portable form starting last spring. It's a growing practice and there was even a Life Hacker article on how and why people want to go portable.
Switched computers and upgraded the OS 3 times in this year and saved a lot of time just having my Users folder on the Passport (via Junction link on C:\Users <-> G:\users) and only had to reinstall the firewall, antivirus, drivers, two games and BOINC.
So what about we never having to reinstall BOINC ever again???

I have a complete version of Windows 7 working off of an 8GB USB stick and want my BOINC working on that stick with a temp folder on a RAM drive. There is a version 6 portable out there I'm trying to get to work and will stick with it as long as possible.

I just uninstalled BOINC 7 with Revo and will never again reinstall a non-portable version.

I'd like to know too.
Maybe it would be possible to create a virtual machine (I read that Boinc now includes a VM?) to be used as a portable BOINC?

I'd like to use a portable Boinc with my work computer (still trying to find an opportunity to ask the admin, though :-), so it shouldn't use the internet, only the processor (or GPU if possible).

Hi,
I'm interrested too !

I don't have admin rights at work, and cannot go through the proxy. So I upload tasks at home (approx. 7-day workload) then run it at work from an old portable version 6.10.60 (http://www.inshame.com/2011/04/boinc-portable-v2.html)

I'm satisfied with it, but it keeps downloading GPU tasks for Seti even though I don't need them (no GPU on my work computer).

A new version vould be nice :)

Cheers !

That must be due to you having a GPU at home then. You can set in your Seti@Home Project Preferences that you only want to receive CPU work.
If need be make a separate venue for the computer ID you're using there.

Having said that, despite having no admin rights and going through a proxy, do you have permission from your boss to run BOINC on the work computer? As the first rule of BOINC is Run BOINC only on computers that you own, or for which you have obtained the owner's permission. Some companies and schools have policies that prohibit using their computers for BOINC-based projects.

People have been fired over running BOINC on work computers without permission. And then sued by their ex-bosses to get electrical bills/decrease in value paid back.

Hi, thanks for your reply. I tried to change the preferences, but didn no work so far.
As for the proxy thing, I get my work on my personal laptop, then copy if on a USB stick and then copy it onto my work computer.

I take good note of your note concerning the rights to run boinc projects and I will ask my employer for that.
Thanks very much !
