Message 50246 - Posted: 20 Aug 2013, 13:43:59 UTC

Hello,

I yesterday installed new GPU drivers which included .NET 4.5 and seemed to also update the MS Visual C++ enduser runtime libraries. Since then, if the Manager is running, I get a constant stream of error windows re: the BOINC projects. I am not a Windows programmer but it's the "Has requested that the program terminate in an unusual way" or similar message. The computer bluescreened overnight. I am not certain if it's the individual projects I am running, or if this would be a problem with all BOINC projects.

For reference, here are the drivers I am using:

http://support.amd.com/us/kbarticles/Pages/AMDCatalyst13-8WINBetaDriver.aspx

If you need more info please don't hesitate to ask.

Please read When requesting and giving help on these forums..., most specifically the part about full system details, plus in Windows specific questions the part about When you see a Blue Screen of Death (BSOD).

Will do so shortly; not ignoring you. Don't have a chance right now to do a proper job as requested in that post, probably tomorrow night.

Hello! Here we are:

Therefore please always be so kind to give the following information:
-> Which BOINC version you run (See Help->About BOINC in BOINC Manager)

7.0.64 (x64), wxWidgets version 2.8.10

-> Details of your system: make and model of your CPU, make and model of your motherboard, amount of RAM, make and model of your videocard, where applicable driver versions, if you're overclocking CPU/GPU and by how much.

No overclocking anywhere.
CPU: AMD Phenom II X6 1090T 6-core @ 3.6Ghz
RAM: 16 GB (Gskill DDR3)
Motherboard: ASRock 870 Extreme3
GPU: Radeon HD 6950 x2 (Crossfire config)
Drivers: current release version, 13.5. Of note, the 13.8R2 beta drivers give the same results.

-> Details of your operating system. Is it 32bit or 64bit?

Win7 Pro 64-bit.

-> The projects your BOINC is attached to, which you are actively running, and of course which you have the problems with.

ClimatePrediction.net and SETI@home. I cannot read the entire error in the popup, as the text is truncated, and insists on giving the full path; but there are always two at a time, and both paths that I can see cut off at /BOINC/projects...

-> What your problem is exactly, write it out in as much detail as you can.

When the manager is started for the first time in a session, two standard MS error popups appear from the MS Visual C++ Runtime Library. It's the rather vague “has requested the runtime to terminate it in an unusual way” message that I can't imagine has ever done anyone any good ever.

-> What you have done so far to try to remedy the problem.

I don't know C++, so very little. The projects seem to run unhindered, I don't notice any greater load than usual, all 6 cores seem to be busy, etc. I can't imagine this could impact anyone's data in any way, but I'm definitely not qualified to make that call, so here I am.

-> Post the first 20 to 30 lines from your BOINC Event Log (CTRL+SHIFT+E).

Windows specific questions
- In all cases: Please tell us which BOINC version you are using. You can find this information in BOINC Manager->Advanced view->Help->About BOINC Manager.

7.0.64 (x64), wxWidgets version 2.8.10 (note: this is covered in the first “for everyone” section)

- When BOINC Manager refuses to make contact with the client,

Does not seem to be an issue.

- If you have problems with your screen saver or graphics,

Does not seem to be an issue per se.
- When you have installation problems in Windows,

Does not apply.

- When you see a Blue Screen of Death (BSOD),

This is the only unknown. One morning it had apparently BSODed overnight. While this is hardly rare in Windows, I hadn't seen one in ages; nothing else had changed; and I had just upgraded my Catalyst drivers.

I tried rolling back to the release version after a complete and clean uninstall, but the errors persist.

I would guess that the C++ runtime libs were updated by the driver update; it was not rolled back when the drivers were; and that something in the newest libs or .NET 4.5 is causing the issue.

Let me know if you need anything else,
Rob

Has it stored the full path in an event ID, by chance?
That'll be stored in Windows Event Viewer, Start->All Programs->Administrative Tools->Event Viewer. Wait for it to load completely (all screens filled with something), then click Windows Logs and look through the Application and System logs. Look for any warning (yellow) or alarm (red) around the time and date of the error.

Oddly, nothing. I restarted the Manager to generate errors again - it popped 3 more sets of two windows each in the span of about 20 seconds. I closed the Manager and checked the logs, but nothing. (Btw, that's not in non-server versions of Windows any more, but you can still open the Admin Tools group from the control panel).

I can't find any reference to Visual C++, or runtime libraries, or BOINC anywhere in the logs. Even with the event viewer open, generating errors, then refreshing the logs... nothing. I don't understand how no event can be in the logs when I'm looking at Windows error popups...

What about any mention of it in: stderrdae.txt or stderrgui.txt?

Hello again, was out of town for a bit.

-gui.txt is unaltered since May, so that's not it. However, in stderr I have the following block repeated a number of times:

Another instance of BOINC is running.
GLE: Another instance of BOINC is running.
GLE: Another instanc
Another instance of BOINC is running.
GLE: Another instance of BOINC is running.
GLE: Another instanc
Another instance of BOINC is running.

There are no timestamps on the individual lines or any other info, it's just as you see there. The file was last modified 8/27 which is in fact the last time I ran the Manager.

I don't, of course, see any evidence of any phantom process related to BOINC, and this occurs even directly after a reboot, manually starting BOINC after turning off the auto-start behaviour.
