I realise that projects run out of work and now that I've set everything to fetch only CPU work, that further restricts what I get, but isn't that item in the Event Log a bit absurd considering I've had an empty Boinc Manager for 2 days now?

Or is it really meaningless and simply means certain projects are higher up in the pecking order? My projects are all set at 100% except for WCG and CPDN - 200%.

That is wrong perhaps?

Nobody has a comment? I would also question why BOINC should be deciding which Project is more important than another. Shouldn't it be polling all projects for work on an equal standing?

(No work for 5 days now).

From When requesting help on these forums:

General
-- In cases where you don't know how to find any information about your system, exit BOINC completely and restart it. Next copy and post the first 20 to 30 lines from the start-up messages. That'll give us enough information about your system, plus it might show a peek into your problem.
To get to the (start-up) messages, in BOINC 6.10 and before, click the Messages tab. In BOINC 6.12, 7.0 and after, when in Advanced view press CTRL+SHIFT+E.

- When having problems with tasks (not) switching, please make sure to post which projects you're attached to and which are all allowed to fetch work and which have work. Check that you didn't set your preferences on the project web site to omit using your CPU or GPU. Check that you didn't suspend the project, the tasks or the use of the piece of hardware.

- When reporting purported bugs in the program:
You can tell us a whole story of how you feel there's a bug in the program, that things aren't working and such, but for all we know it's something you did yourself. Without a debug log we cannot help you and your post will go ignored.
The debug messages will write into the Event Log.

The main debug flags that we're normally interested in are:
<cpu_sched_debug>: problems involving the choice of applications to run.
<work_fetch_debug>: problems involving work fetch (which projects are asked for work, and how much).
<rr_simulation>: problems involving jobs being run in high-priority mode.
<sched_op_debug>: problems involving scheduler operations and other low level information.

Use these flags from the cc_config.xml file.

When posting a log, after you added the flags to the configuration file, restart BOINC, let it run for up to 5 minutes, then post the WHOLE log. Not just 2 or 4 lines.

Do I need to start the debug process ? From what I've read this is normal behaviour in Boinc 7x. You can see what projects I have in my sig above.

Here's the log anyway:

..and if you want debug is this what I put in the config file? (Sorry not too familiar with this)

<cc_config>
<log_flags>
<work_fetch_debug>1</work_fetch_debug>
</log_flags>
</cc_config>

In the absence of a negative response I went ahead and added that config file. Closed and reopened BOINC. I assume I remove the config file when you tell me to? Note I have purposely turned off all GPU computing as I only want CPU work.
Here's the log:

Well I guess there isn't an answer.

I've obviousdly long since removed the config file - still no work.

My last thought is merely that I can't understand why BOINC would be giving some projects higher and others lower priorities when there is no work available, shouldn't it then give all of them an equal shot at fetching work?

I'm not sure, and my head's elsewhere. Can you please post about this to the BOINC Alpha email list? This list needs registration.

If/when you do so, I'll flag your mail for David to check through it.

Not sure what went wrong where, but your email didn't make it. Are you sure you registered correctly? You'll need to confirm the registration before you can email the list.

It's odd, when I got the confirmation email I clicked the link and got to the web page which then said there had been an error.
However my membership page exists and I'm looking at it right now.

I'll try resending the email.

OK got an acknowledgement this time - but I had sent it as plain text this time which makes the log rather difficult to read, so I tried resending in rich text which I had originally used.

It's there in the archive now. Obviously the client doesn't like rich text emails.

Your email is in.
Do know that when you add attachments, that depending on size they not always make it. When emailing a big log to a developer, email him in private with the attachment. That way, if there's any private info in the log, the 3 other alpha testers on the list don't get it as well. ;-)

You can change how you want to send text in the options, MIME or plain text.

Got an answer from boinc_alpha and I'm posting it here in case it's useful to anyone else reading this. Not sure exactly what I can do, if anything. Unless it's possible to completely exclude GPU's from the equation. Something that I'm not sure will do anything anyway.

Work fetch is really based on a priority calculation that is calculated per project.
That "prio" value is based on your REC (Recent Estimated Credit), combined with the amount of downloaded unprocessed work you have on hand.
Those per-project-values are then used to decide which project is asked.

Some slightly-outdated info can be gleaned from the following URLs:
http://boinc.berkeley.edu/trac/wiki/ClientSched
http://boinc.berkeley.edu/trac/wiki/ClientSchedOctTen (newer)

Below is my analysis of your log file. My comments will appear next to the asterisks (***).
You should read through the comments, to understand how the log reflects the logic.

*** if it needed CPU work, it would then cycle through CPU-applicable projects, in much the same manner as we just did GPU-applicable projects.

So, to answer your question... The primary reason it asked rosetta first, then Docking, is because of prio.
And if you look at your RECs, they indicate that, out of the 5 GPU-applicable projects,
You've recently done some rosetta, a little more climateprediction, a little more Docking, quite-a-bit more malariacontrol, and a ton of Cosmology.

Since they all have the same Resource Share values, and Work fetch tries to reach that goal, it prioritized rosetta to be asked first.

I noticed this on the BOINC configuration page and wonder if it might help?

<no_gpus>1</no_gpus> to tell it to ignore GPU's altogether. The question I have is, is it really necessary and should the above be wrapped in cc_config tags or on its own?

Tried a different one.

Well not sure whether or not it was a coincidence, I stopped BOINC, entered
this cc_config options XML file, started BOINC and wham, dozens of work
units cascaded in.

<cc_config>
<options>
<no_gpus>1</no_gpus>
</options>
</cc_config>

My hard drive died recently so have a new installation of BOINC installed.

Once again the client seemed stuck in limbo for days on end with only 1 CPDN WU in progress and kept saying "project not highest priority" for all the others.

Once I input that cc_config file as per the last post of mine, in came 32 LHC WU's.

I find that quite bizarre because I can't see what difference that config file would make to a set up configured not to receive GPU work in the first place (at both the projects' end and in the GUI).

Perhaps someone could explain it. Or is it once again coincidence as reported earlier on in the thread with my previous installation?
