I would like to see a function where one could disable the visual portion of the screensaver while the background computing would continue. My problem is that my son watches Netflix on the computer but the screensaver keeps interrupting the shows, requiring constant touching of the keyboard/mouse. I tried exempting my browser program from BOINC but the browser is active 95% of the time the computer is on, negating the usefulness of the BOINC programs.

You can disable screensavers in your OS settings. BOINC screensaver just acts as an additional screensaver in the list of screensavers your OS already has. One can give you exact steps to follow if you can provide the exact version of OS you have.

Hi,

this answer seems for me not to be complete because Boinc does not only add its screensaver to the list of the OS (in my case WIN7 and XP) but also enables the screensaver with every version update. This was from my point of view all the years i do use Boinc a little anoying, but never so much that i would have commented in the forum. Since some month some of my computer are managed partly by a server based goup rule, which for example does not allow me anymore to change the screenserver settings. As this was turned off when the group rule was activated i did not care about this limitation....but i was even more surprised that Boinc with the last update was able to activate the screen saver again while i as a local administrator am not allowed to disable it again.
From my point of view would it be great if a Boinc update would respect the setting the user did before and not always turn the screen saver on again, or that this behavior would be configurable somewhere within the Boinc settings.

Best Regards,
Jens

The option to use, or not use, a screensaver has been present in the BOINC installer program for each version as far back as I can remember. If you select not to use a screensaver (via the 'advanced' button in the installer), that choice is remembered for subsequent version upgrades - as long as you do upgrade, that is, rather than uninstalling manually and starting again from scratch: then you have to re-make your default choices.
