Message 48809 - Posted: 24 Apr 2013, 19:47:35 UTC

I was running BOINC and got a message that said new software was available. I went to update the new software and the current version will not load. I get two errors: 1) something about internet site not available, and 2) cannot find .msi file on my computer. Is the new version screwed up? Should I stick with the old version?

Any help greatly appreciated.

You've got a corrupt installer file. See this BOINC FAQ for fixes.

There is a bug in release version installer winxp:

Installing each version of boinc caused one more instance of the program to be run at system startup.

Finally I examined the registry, it looks the previous versions uninstall wasn't complete.
There were three shortcuts to boinc:

HKLM/SOFTWARE/Microsoft/Window/CurrentVersion/Run
HKCU/SOFTWARE/Microsoft/Window/CurrentVersion/Run
Start Menu\Programs\Startup

This was after installing 7.0.64 (x86)

Just to see what you see:
HKLM/SOFTWARE/Microsoft/Window/CurrentVersion/Run

This one will contain a link to boinctray.exe, the BOINC idle detection program. This will always start up at Windows boot up. Does this registry entry contain anything else with the name BOINC in it?

HKCU/SOFTWARE/Microsoft/Window/CurrentVersion/Run

This one will contain a link to boincmgr.exe, the BOINC Manager program. It is used to automatically start up BOINC when the user has that option checked in the Options. Does this registry entry contain anything else with the name BOINC in it?
Start Menu\Programs\Startup

This one is no longer used, it was used by a previous BOINC version (all the way back to 5, I think) to start up BOINC at Windows boot up. You can easily remove this entry yourself, and if all is well, it simply won't return on a next installation.

If all is well, at least. Mind checking?
