I use BOINC since years, but only today i noticed that BOINC wants to connect to this ip address 211.98.2.4 in China, it belongs to China Railway Telecommunications Center. Why is that?

Uhm, how about giving some more information? Where do you see this?
Why are you sure it's BOINC that does this? What projects are you attached to? Which BOINC version, on what operating system?

Did you check your system for malware?

I saw it today on the Little Snitch app running on Mac OS X 10.7.0,
it stated that there was an UDP connection via BOINC to port 53 at 211.98.2.4

The only project that I'm in since years is SETI. BOINC version is 7.0.31.
And yes, I'm running Sophos Anti-Virus.

There are some(4) other connections stated by LS to port 53

Might be OpenDNS or my newly established VPN connection the culprit?

Hmmm. I had to stop using OpenDNS a while ago when I was seeing some very strange connections. Didn't bother to raise it with them - You get what you pay for and I was using the free service :)

Switched to Google DNS and not had any oddities since.

Cheers,

Al.
