Hi all, i run a small volunteer only computer center and we use the 30 or so computers to run Boinc, all has been going well until a few weeks ago when the hosts that are using Deepfreeze and windows update have stopped processing work units. The few computers that do not use Deepfreeze or have not have windows update used are still working fine.
The only reason i noticed things were not working was the Boinc screen saver is running but showing no work - also it shows NO SHARED MEM

Can someone point me in a direction to start to trouble shoot. I am going to keep reading :)

Thanks for the reply Jord, i did see that on the Rossetta site but the hosts that are having the issues have had them for several weeks. I am thinking its something that happened when i updated the Deepfreeze system on the hosts, i'm just not sure how to troubleshoot it.

Hi Claggy, Deepfreeze is a program that 'freezes' the state of a computer so that we can use it in a public environment without fear of someone messing it up, a simple restart of the PC restores it to its frozen state. Boinc stores its info on a 'thawed' partition that is invisible to the user.
Boinc has been working fine like this, i have updated the version of deepfreeze on the hosts around the time of the problem so suspect this is what has caused it but i'm struggling to figure out why.
I seem to remember i updated Boinc at the same time though, does anyone know if anything changed in Boinc that may be causing this issue.

I see you have 24 computers listed for CPDN and the computer whose Event Log you quoted is #2 on the list.

The 24 computers all seem to be contacting the CPDN server without problems but I can only find one computer that seems to have been processing climate models regularly and sending trickles and files up to the server recently. It's the AMD that's #14 on the list. This computer has indeed not been updated to BOINC 7.0.28. Has it got Deepfreeze (old or new version)?

A worrying proportion of your computers' hadcm type climate models have been crashing at exactly 25%, 50% or 75% which is when the decadal / ten-year files are produced. When we've sorted out the current problem of why your machines don't seem to be crunching BOINC project tasks I think you should post on the CPDN forum about these crashes to discuss whether it's just bad luck or at least partly due to the way the computers are being used and perhaps how they're being shut down. But this is irrelevant to your current problem.

Did you update all the computers to 7.0.28 on the same day? If so, can you remember approximately when?

Did you update Deepfreeze on all the computers at the same time? If so, when?

Can you see BOINC Manager on these computers or is it invisible to you because it's in the thawed partition?

I wonder whether Deepfreeze is making the tasks go back to a previous state (last checkpoint? beginning?) every time the computer's rebooted? The last checkpoint wouldn't be a problem but the beginning, or where the task was at the time of the last reboot could prevent progress altogether. All those overdue Rosetta tasks...

By the way, don't abort any CPDN tasks even if they're overdue because the CPDN server will still accept them and the results will be used.

Deepfreeze is used by daily system re-imagers, something WCG techs are well acquainted with and the reason the report_results_immediately function exists. The consequence on CPDN.. pass, would would expect that somehow BOINC would have to be restored to a pre-deepfreeze-ing event, else it's loop-di-loop.

Yes, I don't think the new version of BOINC can have caused this new behaviour which would have been seen in alpha testing; all the project forums would have been inundated with complaints. I think DeepFreeze must be causing tasks to loop. Perhaps the new version of DeepFreeze is configured differently and you need to look at the options for the administrator.

To identify looping the quickest method is to open the climate model graphics and look at the model dates or timesteps.

I'm not convinced of this though. There's one climate model (http://climateapps2.oerc.ox.ac.uk/cpdnboinc/result.php?resultid=15433063) which gives the impression that the problem started on 23 Nov. But another model on the same computer started before that date, continued afterwards with no hiatus and completed successfully.
