Unix end of time. Looks like we have a bug in BOINC.

No, I think it was intentional.

My days might be numbered here.

And quite a number.

I am not going there yet until some clarifications are made.

The bug: The furthest time that can be represented in the Unix time format (32 bit signed integer) is 03:14:07 UTC on Tuesday, 19 January 2038 (2147483647 seconds after 1 January 1970)

By now all code should be using 64 bit unsigned integers, not 32 bit signed integers.

Oh, know that after that time, they won't be able to ban you, intentionally or otherwise.

Spill if you wish about that PM.

That's the value under the "Forever" banish option. So yes, looks like they put you out for good. Needs an administrator with database access to recover from that, so time to start groveling to someone (and not to me, it's just a title I have around here so I can actually delete threads and posts, usually of spammers). :-)

I also think you got it from an administrator, or do the moderators there have the Forever option as well?

The project administrator posted on the subject: SETI message 1568071

The ban was intentional, and means what it says.

I had read Eric's answer before, but never read into it that Mark's ban was complete, Forever. Merely another 7 weeks in Tibet vacation.

Never know when you insult another man's wife.

Never know when you insult another man's wife.

I did not insult her.
She is a fine lady.
I made the mistake of taking her to task, that is all.

Eric is truly pissed off.

I have been never so misunderstood in my life.

Life as I knew it shall never be the same again.

I have never, ever.............
Wished any thing bad to those I love and cherish.
Eric and Angela.
Both are dear to my heart.

I hope one day each shall understand and appreciate that.

I love you both, please know that above all else.

There have never in the history of mankind been so few words so misimderstood.

Let me be very clear, and very blunt, about this.

The words were very well understood. They said: Mark is drunk. Again.

The words that you write when you are drunk - mot only on the message boards, but in PMs and emails as well - are what has led to this ban.

The ban will stay in place at least until you have demonstrated that you have your addiction to alcohol under control.

Seek professional help, my friend. Proper, medical, counselling and treatment for alcoholism.

The only words that Angela and Eric want to hear from you right now are the name of your treatment center, and the date you enter their programme.

There are a lot of people at SETI@Home that would be very relived to know that as well.

I know you regard me as your enemy who somehow contributed to this ban, but I would like to see you get help too.

Been there, done that. Although I never got banished for it. But here goes...

8 years ago I was a drunk poster at Seti@Home. One Sunday after a night of rum and coke, I found that someone had posted a funny but hard comment in my direction. What it was I can't remember, but it was this point at which I thought "Enough!".

The other day I stopped with the alcohol and I've been off the juice since that 17th of August 2007. Yep, just had my 7th anniversary. Since that time I drink (ice) tea, Coca Cola Zero and if I drink beer, it's one of the Bavaria 0.0% versions. I cannot trust myself when I do drink an alcoholic beverage, as I will always want to have more and become drunk. So I don't drink it at all.

Yes, I did it without professional help, cold turkey.
Gained 30 kilos (66.6 lbs) in the months after that. Managed to get 20 kilos (44.4 lbs) off of that.
Lost half my teeth in the upper jaw (rotted out), also due to the effect that I quit drinking.
I sleep better.
I can jump in the car at any moment of the day without needing to detoxify for several hours first.
Mind, 3 years after that I quit smoking, which made things even better health wise. Just that I gained those 20 kilos again. ;-)

In any case, I can still be typing out hard answers at Seti or wherever, but where in the past I would hit that Post Reply button, these days I get to thinking half way down the answer and most of the times dumb it down and lessen its hardness. Or don't post it at all, come back several hours or days later and then post something, as then I'm in a different mindset.

I still have the bottles of beer that I had planned to drink on the 17th of August 2007. They're sitting unopened on a shelf in the living room, where I can see them, grab them, turn them over in my hands. They'll probably become a good port one time or another. I don't need them anymore, they're something of a trophy.

I thank you all for your words of support.
What you have to know is that my soul is still intact.

As I often do, I'll make light of the circumstances by using my sense of humor.

I'll refer to Animal House.
Fat, drunk, and stupid is no way to go through life, Son.

I am ok on two outta three.

I'll admit I fail on the third.

So at least I am neither fat nor stupid.
And, not presently drunk, either.

One day at a time.

There is not one day since I turned 17 that a week went by without a drinking episode.
Ever. It led a younger brother to suicide. I have been stronger, and never turned that way. It has, however, led to a path of destruction such a few have ever known.

Professional help? Hell no. There is not a being on this planet that can tell me what I don't already know. And most of those 'professionals'? They are mostly ex drunks trying to save their little souls. I have little empathy for them.

An old Charlie Daniels song sums it up best.

'It's my life. God was the one to give it.
And ain't nobody gonna tell me how to live it.
It's my song, right or wrong.
But you ain't gonna tell me how to live my life.'

Amen, Charlie.

Still in denial. Hasn't hit bottom yet. There is nothing any of us can do to help him until he hits his bottom and wants to change. Face it, he likes being a drunk.

Jord, congratulations on your seven years! That's fantastic.

Bottom?
That shall be the day of my funeral.
Denial?
Yeah.
Still not there yet.
Do those of you who have been there have a clue?
Certainly.
Can you save me with your unlimited wit?
Certainly not.

You all think you have it all sussed for me.
You all seem to know my mind and what it contains.

You do not.

I have a lot more going for me that some of you think.

You are given a casual glance at what and who I am.
And I have revealed more than most to you all.

I choose what and how I present myself here.

You do not really have a clue who I am.

What angered Eric was not a casual comment to Angela.

What I think angered him most was that I questioned the project.

I have now some questions about why this project continues to 'search' data from years past.

As one of the most ardent participants, I think I have every right to ask that question.

He got all pissed off and redirected it as being about Angela........
It was not.

I'm really proud of you, Jord! I had not known that things had reached this point. Hopefully others can learn from what you've been through.

I am sorry to see that you are still in denial about your behaviour.

As the sole mod on duty that night I am happy to accept any blame you want for the damage control I was forced to do because of you. The other mods had nothing to do with anything that went on during the night you decided that your right to post and drink out weighed anyone else's right to respect.

If you have sent any of them offensive messages I suggest you apologise to them. If you wish to send me any offensive messages, they will be ignored.

You were rude, belligerent and you took a private discussion with Angela put it out of context on the boards causing distress to other posters, who were led to believe by your actions that their donations were unwelcome.

Eric is rightly fed up with your behaviour. He is not the only one. It is in his hands now and if you want him to have a change of heart I suggest you take this time to engage in some deep self reflection.

You are not a nice drunk, Mark. Nor a unique and special one. The qualities that made you such a liked contributor to the project are best displayed when you are sober.
