Dunno if they already have plans in place to replace it or if a donation campaign is needed to fund a new one.

There has been a "little talk" about a fundraiser in "number crunching" before Seti went on it's usual outrage , think someone said that before anything could be done they would need to know the specs the lab would want with a new card or maybe update the whole server caboodle .
If there's a fundraiser i'll chip in what i can when the time comes

I think the "clever " people have run out of idea's just coz you can add in CGI DON'T make things better than the originals

In the case of Westworld, there's pretty little cgi, about the only stuff seen thus far is the skeleton hands playing the piano in the intro and the 3D printers printing the woman on the horse and their Vitruvian Man. The rest is played by people, in a real western world environment. Even the androids are played by people.

Even the level where the androids are being serviced is just a big room with glass wall dividers. Pretty little in the way of computer generated content.

And weirdly enough, on the subject of remakes, we're liking the remake of Macgyver. As we do The Flash, Supergirl, Hawaii Five-0 and Lethal Weapon. All remakes of classic series or films.

Yeah, that was me, more or less. If it's simply just a new card, we need to know what specs are needed to put fundraiser pool together to get a new one. PCI-e? 8 channels? 16? 24? Are there brands/models of cards that are known to not play nice in the linux distro being used? What physical card dimensions are we constrained to? Those are all pieces of info that are needed.

THen someone said there's been talks of down-sizing the rack space footprint in the co-lo, so there's the possibility of some new servers maybe being something to look into.

I suggested that with the upcoming Zen (AMD) architecture, they have plans of doing 32c/64t Opterons in the near future, so it probably wouldn't be terrible to put a 2p server together (64c/128t) with 512gb-1tb of RAM and then do a dozen or so VMs on one 4U machine. Yeah, it makes a single point of failure (if the host OS crashes, or the hardware fails.. everything goes down), but it can significantly reduce the rack footprint to virtualize most of the project.

Just a thought.

Think you are correct. None of my uploads are going through and the main website is timing out.

I'd pretty much guess that it's Caroline again. This must be the 4th or 5th time in a row. Eric told me 9 days ago that it needed a new RAID card or backplane and Jeff was doing tests to determine which. Clearly the work is ongoing.

But it may not be Caroline this time of course. Yes it's irritating, but I have good caches of work, and there is always Einstein if I run out. No angst this end, it'll get fixed sometime. Real life goes on!

I thought Caroline has been offline, at least project wise, for the past several days. Unless they brought it back up after Tuesday maintenance? I'm not sure if I looked at the server status since maintenance.

Did someone spill bleach?

edit:: erm... not on poor Caroline or any servers, and I see there's a whole thread about it. My apologies :)

I am not a great fan of the all the eggs in one basket scenario. As has been said, it's a single point of failure and you lose the lot. This bit about downsizing the CoLo footprint. Is this the CoLo wanting extra space for themselves, or Seti trying to reduce their rent there?

Anyhow isn't a new card or backplane a lot cheaper than a new server? I think we are rather jumping ahead a bit here. In any case after DA's announcement of the forthcoming end to S@H Phase 1, the lads in the lab may have a whole new set of plans for phase 2. It's sometimes better to be at the leading edge not the bleeding edge.

Apart from the current Atlas offer from Einsten there may be further opportunitiies there than new kit in the Colo. On the other hand, one benefit of the CoLo is that it is all part of UCB and we have some spare hard disks there. If a drive fails a call to their staff will get a replacement hot plugged negating a visit from Seti staff.

Yes, there are dangers of putting a lot of eggs in one basket. It doesn't have to be the entire project being on one server, but several servers can be virtualized onto one box instead of being in four different boxes. The DBs themselves can still be in separate machines, but with that many cores in one host machine, I don't see why it wouldn't be able to be the webserver, validator, assimilator, and even the splitters all in one box. But yes, it would make a single point of failure for a large portion of the back-end, which is indeed a risk.

As for the need to reduce the rack-space footprint.. I don't know what the story is on that. I just heard that it is something that is being "looked into" and "considered." I was just tossing it out there as an idea to think about for the not-too-distant future.

I agree, we need to know what the situation is with the current RAID card woes though. Is it the card? Is it the backplane? Is it something that needs crowd-funding for replacement? All good questions.

That gave me at least the time to change the broken case fan. One of the case fans of my AeroCool Aero-1000 case had stopped, so I contacted the place I bought the thing from to ask if the case fans were part of the 24 month warranty. They were, the store just didn't have any AeroCool fans in stock, so they sent me a Sharkoon system fan instead.

I just took the old fan out, put the new one in. It's putting out quite some bit more air than the old fan did, but at a louder noise as well. Not that it matters that much as most my fans are controlled through Speedfan and running at 20% while the system's idle. No need for all those fans to run at 100% when nothing's hot.

But just tried the Sharkoon at 90% and although it's loud, it also moves a lot more air than the AeroCool did.

Eric says carolyn is at fault again for the outage.
I was mistakenly thinking that carolyn was offline.
